OKTEENERFEST 2017: Oktoberfest
September 14-17 in the Alpine village of Helen, GA!

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=316283

This year we travel to the Alpine village of Helen, GA during the town's 47th annual Oktoberfest celebrations! While we experience traditional Bavarian festivities and cuisine from oompah bands and lederhosen to hot pretzels and German bier, our Porsche 914s will feel as though they have traveled back to their homeland! So mark your calendars and be sure to join other 914 owners for some fantastic driving, plenty of socializing, a bit of showing off, and a truckload of give-aways in a unique setting that you won't want to miss.

Join the http://okteenerfest.com/subscribe-okteenerfest-email-list/ or https://www.facebook.com/Okteenerfest for quickest access to information as it becomes available.

In addition to the driving, Okteenerfest features plenty of good eating, an awards ceremony, tons of give-aways from the most awesome vendors, a Peoples Choice Car Show, and some of the nicest people you will ever meet gathered in a single place.

Registration includes:

· Thursday evening snack/beverages
· Friday driving tour
· Friday lunch at Jake Raby’s shop
· Saturday entry to Peoples Choice Car Show
· Saturday evening awards banquet dinner
· Chance to win some great trophies
· Tickets for a chance to win some AWESOME door prizes
· Event T-Shirt
· Lifetime of memories, meeting new friends, and a chance to bond with your 914

The http://www.helendorf.com is our host hotel (33 Munich Strasse, Helen, GA 30545 Phone: (800) 445-2271)
We have reserved a block of 25 Standard Rooms, 22 Riverfront Balcony Rooms and 8 Patio Rooms for our group for the nights of September 14, 15 and 16, 2017. yellowsleep[1].gif
You MUST mention you are with either Okteenerfest or the 914 club

The rates are a bit higher than we are used to but Okteenerfest is being held during the town's annual Oktoberfest celebration and these rates are a substantial discount over their normal rates.
The venue and festive atmosphere should more than make up for the extra cost! driving.gif smilie_flagge6.gif beerchug.gif chowtime.gif beer3.gif
NB: The block of rooms AND OUR PREFERRED RATE will be held until August 1. After that, the rooms will be release to the public and the rate will revert back to their rack rate for everyone who books after August 1. So register and book as soon as you are able. type.gif

These vendors SUPPORT Okteenerfest and the 914. The majority have supported Okteenerfest from the beginning. aktion035.gif

I had a great time last year. One of the best organized and fun events I've ever been to and I didn't even have a 914 to drive. This year I'll have a teener that runs.

Posted by: Tom_T Apr 20 2017, 07:55 PM

Fun tubin' there too, if there's enough water runnin'! piratenanner.gif

I may be in the east area then too, but sans my 914 since i'd be flying for biz.

You realize that this is in direct conflict with RRC? That's not fair to those who got to go to both last year.... dry.gif rolleyes.gif

Posted by: hot_shoe914 Apr 20 2017, 09:17 PM

I plan to be there this year with or without a car. I have two that run currently and one that is drivable, so hopefully I will enjoy the drives as well.

Hay Shoe. What's the drive time from Memphis to Helen? 9 hours to Memphis from DFW + ?
I might be able to swing the time off but won't know until June.

Family has a cabin 3miles from Helen. Count me in this year.
If you guys need any help with routes I'm only 35 miles away and know most of the good motorcycle roads up there.

Posted by: 914dave Apr 21 2017, 06:52 AM

I'm in for sure. We should get a northeast caravan.

Posted by: Garland Apr 21 2017, 07:27 AM

693 miles for me, and many hours of preparation before that.

Hey all
We sincerely apologize about the conflict with RRC, but that weekend is the only one that the venue had available, and they are the only venue in Helen that can handle our group.

As Okteenerfest has grown, we've run into a bit of a good problem to have: we have lots more people attending (GOOD!!!) but finding a venue to handle us (110+ people/60+ cars), including rooms, parking, good roads in the area, a car show location, etc. has become a huge challenge. (Problem). Then when we find it, we have to go with their availability.

As Steve said, this is Helen' Oktoberfest time which runs deom Sept 9 through all of October. We are coming near the beginning so it's a little quieter (slightly) and had availability. After this weekend, rates go WAY up and we couldn't get the room block.

OH...one other thing we haven't worked out yet...at this point, there is no room for trailers. We are working on that but we can't park them at the hotel and we don't have an alternate location yet. I'm trying to work with the city on a spot, but there's no guarantees at this point....

Posted by: db9146 Apr 21 2017, 08:27 AM

I'll be there!!

Will we have a defined parking area?

Posted by: John Jentz Apr 21 2017, 09:19 AM

Posted by: Cracker Apr 21 2017, 11:42 AM

PS: ...yet another "river view" is spoken for!

All good.... However...I am the first person to 'bitch' about scheduling overtop of other events...and here we are doing it!! Yes, RRC is really far away (distance wise) from Okteenerfest, but we have so few 914 specific events that it hinders the ability to attend both/multiple.

Posted by: naro914 Apr 24 2017, 07:25 AM

Regarding hotel rooms:

The only thing we ask is that if you reserve a hotel room, PLEASE be confident you will be registering for the event. Due to the strict nature of the room block and pricing, we don't want people booking rooms only to not register and have people that HAVE registered and are waiting for a room get screwed on the pricing.

We had wanted to require a registration before booking the room, but we have no easy method to make that happen, so we are trusting all of you!! beerchug.gif

Please be courteous to your fellow Teener owners!

Registration will open shortly. Steve is working through a few minor changes.

Thanks !!

The BIG question I have is..... since the stars have aligned and the various gods have smiled upon this event such as to allow it to begin on September 14th - our very own '914 Day' - what can we all do to make it just that teensy, tiny, little extra bit special?

I'll be the first (of I'm sure many) to enthusiastically cast a vote for Bob Saville to wear Lederhosen all weekend? cheer.gif aktion035.gif happy11.gif

I know, I know... I'm no great shakes as a Photoshop expert, but here is my re-creation of what that magnificent sight could be...

Happy 4th of July everyone!!

Just a reminder, we are less than a month away from the day that our block of rooms at the Helendorf will be released to,the general public and our preferred price is no longer available. Once that happens, it is unlikely you will get a room there as they have a waiting list of other people to fill the slots.

I know that's really early and many of you wait until the last minute to sign up, but I just wanted to give you a friendly heads up!!

Posted by: Philip W. Jul 4 2017, 10:28 AM

just reserved my room today- might go up a day earlier - i dont think there are any patio rooms left either. i know i registered back in the beginning but i dont remember if i sent in my check

Posted by: naro914 Jul 7 2017, 02:45 PM

FYI, I just heard from the hotel - there are only a handful of room still left, so if you've been slack about registering, get registered and get your hotel room NOW!!

Posted by: Mblizzard Jul 7 2017, 04:02 PM

I have been a bit lax on getting some of the sponsor details out. But over the next week I will be adding them.

Posted by: JawjaPorsche Jul 7 2017, 04:42 PM

FYI: If you wait too long to reserve a room and they are all gone, there are hotels in Cleveland, Georgia. Only 9 miles away and much cheaper.

Posted by: Wdunster Jul 7 2017, 09:35 PM

If you have never been to this event, you have to sign up!!!!!! You will not regret it. This is of course a biased opinion that is worth what you paid for it but this is by far the most fun you will have with ANY Porsche group!!!
If you have been before you know you should sign up!

Common Nancy, get off your duff and join us for okteenerfest even if you can't bring the 914!

If I'm back there on my travels at that time, then I'll try to stop by one day, but would probably not stay overnite there.

Our daughter & family are moving from Charlottesville VA to Jackson TN now, but my wife still has 2 brothers/family in the ATL area, & I have business all over. I just don't know what is up for October yet.

In any case - have fun! beerchug.gif

So it's really "Septeenerfest"!? confused24.gif biggrin.gif

OK, same deal for me with September travels, but maybe less likely that I'll be there mid-Sept.

At least it's not like the BMW-CCA trying to do their Octoberfest in New Orleans in stinky hot & sticky JULY!!?? WTF.gif

Members complained & they moved it to this October, since I think they had very little interest/reservations up to that point. I may be in LA at the time for a wedding & biz, so I may swing by there for at least one October fun day on an otherwise grueling multi-state/city trip.

I was just poke.gif you. biggrin.gif

The Phoenix Club out here, where the big LA Porsche Swap Meet is held, also does a longer Sept-Oct celebration too.

I wish I could make one, cuz I enjoyed visiting with you after the one near Asheville back when the kids still lived there, but they sidetracked us to see the house that they were buying in Candler that day with the Realtor, so I missed hooking up for the drive/lunch stop. sad.gif

It is!

So no "floating logs" either Bob! dry.gif

Also, watch yer butt if the water is low!

My wife & kids went tubing a few years back during one of the local droughts, & they bumped along the rocks all the way downstream! blink.gif

PS - That was many years back actually, when the kids were still in middle/grade school, & you never know what will "pop out" with young kids bumping butts on rocks, as my wife found out! dry.gif

First of the Prize Details!

We would like to thank Matt at http://vintagecarleds.com for being a Okteenerfest Sponsor.

I purchased a set of the VC4000 lights for my car and they are a huge improvement in light output and safety. But Vintage Car LEDs has stepped it up a bit and they are providing a https://vintagecarleds.com/shop/7-inch/vc5000-ultimate-7-inch-kit/light kit! Yep you will get it all. LED bulbs and new reflectors. I have done this swap and it is as easy as changing light bulbs and the change in lighting is beyond belief! Check out the details on the https://vintagecarleds.com/shop/7-inch/vc5000-ultimate-7-inch-kit/. These work and lighten the load on our limited alternator output.

All you have to do is look at the http://www.msdsinc.com/company.htmlweb page and you know that you will like these guys!

Martin Schneider and MSDS have been in business since 1976 and have much love for the 914! They usually have a set of T4 headers on hand for shipping. Their T4 headers are made USA from cold roll 1.5" OD mandrel formed steel. These are a direct fit to T4 heads which means NO stub pipes (no loss of ground clearance).

They have several coatings are available but I am looking at the ceramic coating and these headers are good for up to 2.4L type 4 engines. Need something more exotic just give Martin a call.

In the interest of full disclosure, as soon as I get my FI conversion running I am pulling the trigger on buying a set of these for my 914. Hopefully that will be done for everyone to see by Okteenerfest.

MSDS is giving some lucky person a high flow air intake system for the 914! It does not take a hard look at the stock system to see that it could be easily improved. But the MSDS system is a direct swap that will add more flow and the get a few more HP out of your engine

Posted by: Mblizzard Jul 13 2017, 09:29 AM

With the hot temperatures lately I think we all could use a bit more information regarding our engine. Scott Johnson and Scott Johnson have sent just the thing! A http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=347/category_id=248/mode=prod/prd347.htm!

Attached Image

I am running this exact one and have been very happy with its responsiveness and accuracy. Also very readable in all but the brightest direct sunlight which is essential when the top is out. If you don't win this and look to purchase, make sure you get the lead for the 14mm spark plug.

Is has started!

Boxes are arriving containing loot for the event.

Maybe not a box but Dr. Evil has provided some lucky person a $500 discount on a transmission rebuild.

It is staggering just how much a transmission rebuild can change a car and the driving experience.

Things are slowly but surely coming together for the 2017 Edition of Okteenerfest!!

Here's a little "promo video" I put together from some of the video footage we took while scouting the driving route last weekend (oh, and doing some relaxing tubing down the river!!).

Posted by: Mblizzard Jul 17 2017, 11:13 AM

All Right! Better get ready for this one.

This might not be for everyone but if you are planning a build of a larger displacement engine (2.0 and up) or have one currently you might want to check out what Charles from the LN/Type IV Store is offering up.

Need a bit of extra cooling? How about ahttps://type4store.com/conversion-cooling-systems/type-4-deluxe-dtm-kit.html?

DTM = Down The Middle. Is not just adding more cooling it provides more stable average head temperatures across all 4 cylinders. This makes a huge difference in cooling, HP, and engine life.

This kit cones with everything from new clutch, pressure plate, oil cooler adaptor kit, and installation DVD. Will require some work to install but this beauty is valued at over $2K!

We do nothing. Its these vendors that are amazing. Typically I recuse my self from some of the major prizes but there are some this year that are making me rethink my approach!

I can neither confirm or deny the prizes that make it to the event! Actually one year I left a prize at my house. Fourtantly my wife was able to bring it to the event.

Posted by: DrinkMan Jul 17 2017, 06:17 PM

Will there be an "day of event" registration opportunities? We live close by but there is a lot of uncertainty if we can make it. We won't know until the last minute and then we would just commute to the events.

Posted by: Mblizzard Jul 18 2017, 10:59 AM

Wow have to say a big thanks to Mark Taylor and http://www.stoddard.com/914.htmlas they have stepped up BIG time to be the overall event sponsor! This represents a massive vote of support for the 914, the dream all of us try to keep going, and Okteenerfest!

Having the support of http://www.stoddard.com/914.htmlat this level takes us to a new level and should allow for some amazing event options. Got to support these guys as they are supporting us in a huge way!

Just a reminder...and those of you that get the emails will get one probably tomorrow....

The block of rooms we are holding at the Helendorf will be released on TUESDAY AUGUST 1!!

This means that you WILL NOT be able to get a room at the host hotel after Monday July 31. And for those that think they can get a much cheaper room somewhere else....good luck. I'm sure they are out there, (I think the Econo Lodge has a few smoking rooms left) but remember, this is during their Oktoberfest celebration so rooms are expensive...

i understand that for some people it's difficult to plan and commit this far ahead, and we're sorry about that. (In fact, the hotel wanted to drop the block a full 2 months in advance of the event!! I had to plead with them to push it to Aug 1...). But we wanted to bring Okteenerfest to a completely different type of location - one that has other fun things to do for everyone and is more of a destination unto itself. Trust me, it has certainly been challenging on the planning side with a ton of still unresolved issues, but hopefully it'll all get worked out in time... smile.gif

Just show up! it is fun even if you car is not there. Just got my off jack stands last night! So I have a few concerns as well. While you might take some grief for the Miata it would be nothing compared to what I would have to endure if I have to ride shotgun in my wife's Boxster!

Heck no! I got my butt kicked many times by Miata's when I was running SCCA autocross. Besides... if it's stressing you out too much, a little blue painters tape that won't hurt your paint job, a few minutes of work and VOILA! it can have a 914 emblem on it too! cheer.gif happy11.gif lol-2.gif

As I will be calling for all members to support the sponsors of all 914 events, I also encourage you to stay away from those vendors that have spurned the 914. The lack of a certain avian oriented vendor should be noted by all.

Given your extensive list of sponsors in the other post above Mike, I'm really surprised that the bird droppings didn't fall somewhere around you .... especially since Porsche/PCNA themselves are sponsors, along with all the others listed! dry.gif

Maybe try calling Tom Gould there, & make a personal appeal, although he's not an owner now, he was one of the founders & is a former 914 owner himself.

It looks like an excellent turn-out, but unfortunately for me, it's looking more like I'll be in SoCal during the dates this time again, but I will hope for a future year to join the fun. sad.gif

Cheers! beerchug.gif

I think at times my love for these cars might be in excess of how the real world views them. Certainly we get great support from many people and companies. Probably more than a small event should.

Moving on to a more positive viewpoint!

When does registration close? I'm making a trip to NW GA around that time on other business and may be able to attend, with another 914 owner from up here.

Very timely question, Chris, as Bob and I were just discussing this earlier today.
Last day to register will be August 25th with payment due by the 1st of September.
This allows us (barely) enough time to get the final shirt count to the printers in time to get them printed before the event as well as get all the packets together (maps, route directions, etc, etc) and tend to all the other last minute details of the event.
Hope to see you in Helen. It's another record year with well over 100 attendees and 60+ 914s aktion035.gif

The last couple years we tried to hold registration open just a bit too long, which put undue stress on our suppliers and us (and mistakes were made). Couple that with a crazy schedule we all seem to have this year, and a new location that has different timing demands....so as Steven noted:

LAST DAY TO REGISTER: Friday August 25

PAYMENT MUST BE RECIEVED BY: Friday September 1

Whut!? No CBs?? huh.gif

I had a CB in my 914 75-85 back in the pre-cell days, when that was you're only lifeline on long trips.

Then I transferred it to the `88 Westy when we got it in `88, but not used much now, other than for "entertainment listening" on road trips, listening to the truckers' banter.

However, it did save my a$$ in `99 when we blew a hole in the Westy's motor throwing #4 rod a few miles past Zzzzyx in the CA desert on I-40 coming home from our usual long summer IN-AR-OK trip, at midnight, & cell was dead, but I was able to raise an old school trucker who pulled over, used his cell to get AAA out & waited with my 2 kids & I until the tow/flatbed truck got there. Great guy in his late 60s & still driving pro!

Had to go out of the country for a bit. Just now getting back to posting some more information.

As a second year sponsor http://www.rix914parts.com/ is providing some very fine items. First, a really well made firewall mat and sound reduction mat. This was an item he Richard provided last year and it was really nice!

Attached ImageAttached Image

Richard is also going to provide some of his truly awesome polycarbonate rain hats for 6 carbs! Pretty nice bit of kit! Attached Image

Rich says he will have a few other goodies as well!

Posted by: Mblizzard Aug 22 2017, 11:59 AM

Would also like to welcome a new vendor. https://www.griotsgarage.com/ started out much like this event, just an odd idea that caught on after awhile.Attached Image

Kimberly of their Club Assistance Program is sending 2 wonderful car care kits.

One will be taken home by a winner, the other will be at your disposal for use in cleaning up your car before the car show.

You can try the following products and see how they work! All of the following products are ideal for quick clean options!

https://www.griotsgarage.com/product/speed+shine.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=&from=Search - Simply mist it on, gently wipe dry, and buff.
l
https://www.griotsgarage.com/product/interior+cleaner.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=&from=Search - Quickly and safely clean all interior surfaces and materials from headliner to carpet with minimal fuss.

https://www.griotsgarage.com/product/spray-on+wax.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=&from=Search - Spray-On Wax base wax enhancer that extends the life of your natural waxes and paint sealants

https://www.griotsgarage.com/product/wheel+cleaner.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=&from=Search - highly-concentrated formula clings, penetrates, and loosens brake dust, grit, and road grime.

With the drive Bob has picked this could be very useful!

There are few things in the automobile world that translate universally. But there are certain people who create works of are that are beyond words. I took many pictures of Tim Kinney's gauges that have become such a marque item for this event and frankly all of them completely failed to capture the work this guy does.

But if you come to Okteenerfest you will have the chance to take home a true work of art!Attached Image

Well I hope everyone is not getting too tired of me posting goodies?

Ron and Tucker from http://www.aasesales.com/ came up with a few goody bags that are out of this world!
Attached Image
Look at some of the parts below and you will understand that AASE has the parts to support all your 914 parts needs. Also whenever I have a interesting part for other cars, AASE has me covered. If I need a part for the Boxster, a quick call to Tucker usually resolves the issue very quickly.

Just take a look at the items in these bags! That tool bag is exceptionally nice and gift certificates can certainly make your day! The other items can certainly put some finishing touches on your 914. Taking home any of these will make attending the event very worth while!

Bag #1:
-Set of four floor mats
-$100.00 gift certificate
-Left and right parking brake cables
-Heater cable
-914/6 clutch cable
-2 NOS ATE brake pad kits
-Exclusive/rare PORSCHE poster
-Smooth vinyl tool bag
-914 timing decal
-914 owner’s manual

Bag #2:
-Set of four floor mats
-$75.00 gift certificate
-Heater cable
-914/6 clutch cable
-2 NOS ATE brake pad kits
-914 timing decal

Bag #3:
-Set of four floor mats
-$75.00 gift certificate
-Heater cable
-914/6 clutch cable

I get to communicate with some interesting people when I reach out to vendors trying to get support for this event. One of the most interesting this year is a company in Germany FERTAN. They make some pretty impressive rust treatments.

So I was thinking all 914s have rust, German company making rust treatment equals a perfect match! Super long shot but I reached out to them.

Not quite sure how all of this will work out but they have agreed to help us out! Seriously we are receiving support all the way from Germany! I have been speaking with Björn Lang, Managing Director / General Manager of FERTAN in Germany.

Somehow with the help of Goggle Translate it seems like they will be a sponsor.
Kind of says a lot about this event and the 914!

OK good point. As they say the only thing that beats cubic inches is cubic dollars! Would love to have a LS 914!

I am sure everyone gets tired of me posting. But even if you are not coming to this event, take a look at the vendors that are supporting the 914 and keep them in mind wen making your purchases. I know this event is just a small part of the support they provide to event across the US but we have some amazing support of a car that is over 40 years old and almost forgotten. There is really a staggering amount of support for our little cars and anything we can do to repay these vendors for their support would be awesome. Even if you don't have a néed to buy look at the Okteenerfest FB page and like or share our vendors information.

Not the most media savvy and I am still trying to get my car running for the event do i am struggling to get all of the information out but your support would be very appreciated.

Here is a simple map of Helen I made up for the event packets. (map above is better)
Basically, baring bad weather we will take over the Riverside Park.
Cars SHOULD be all parked by 9am (except for those that inevitably show up late) and we stay until about 11:30 or so.

Thanks. Don't mean to hijack this thread with my pic posting owes but usually I don't have a problem. In this instance though, I posted my response and pics via my iPhone. When I view the post from my iPhone they appear correctly oriented in the post but when I look on my mac they are not oriented correctly. Is my phone correcting them within the 914world app? Odd.

A storm is coming! and its headed this way- that is Florida, Georgia and South Carolina -

Wondering if the event is in jepordy? Maybe to early to tell but many models on Irma show it coming right up SC and Georgia- keeping in mind its over 400 miles wide at this point, would cover the whole state of SC George and is wide as Florida is long!
Time will tell I know - a few more days will make it more clear where and when it turns, right now our military here is planning for a evac this weekend, most are saying go west - way west.

Thoughts??

STOP with the potential hysteria talk - I am a contractor and deal with the weather nearly every day - never have I seen an accurate forecast 8-days in advance. With that said, if they are correct, it will be perfect. I am currently only 15-miles from Helen and here is the view from my desk. The current forecast for Okteenerfest is: PERFECT!

what he is telling you is NOT hysteria it is the reality of the evacuation from florida and other coastal areas -this will effect Atlanta and flights in and out- yes it will take a few days for us to know exact location of landfall and its extent and strength at that time which for us will be early next week- there are those in texas in Houston that said the same thing as you just said and you see what happened there! Don't be a fool and assume that just because you have a clear sky today that it will be clear a week from now - I am sitting here talking with military meteorologists looking at all the possibilities. We are in a coastal area and will most likely be leaving- a bit earlier than planned, looking at cabins in the area around Helen in hopes that its outer bands don't reach that far out - but it is the size of TEXAS! time will tell - no panic no hysyeria, just planning. ......

As Tony said, we are a long way off and a LOT can happen in the next week +, especially with a hurricane. Absolutely...if you live in Florida you're going to be impacted. But NW Georgia shouldn't get much IMO...
As of RIGHT NOW, this is the weather forecast from the Weather Channel:

Attached Image

when hurricanes make landfall, they usually weaken and speed up. So sure, the area might get rain on Monday/Tuesday, but unless it turns left, it's unlikely we'll get anything really bad.
Latest "Models" show it going way more east.

So, to guarantee it won't rain, I won't wash my car. smile.gif

So on a personal note... my company NaroEscape Motorsports is also a sponsor for this years Okteenerfest.

For one...we have 'sponsored' the Fun trophies for all of these events, since they are made up of broken parts from OUR cars - hence paid for by us/NaroEscape Motorsports... headbang.gif

But more importantly, we are offering a 10% off coupon on all orders over $150 to all attendees that buy ANYTHING on the website or stuff we carry that isn't there (just ask, I am still working on getting more products up every day).

Go to: http://naroescapemotorsports.com

Basically it's race/track safety stuff and some general products like brake pads/fluids and such.

If you're going and would like to buy some things in advance and have me deliver them to the event, PM me for the coupon code (this is exclusive to attendees!!)

ALSO...for all you small businesses that make 914 specific (or other model) products that would like to consider having us be a dealer for your products, contact me and we can talk. I'd love to expand our product offering to cover a lot of the 914 world of products!!

you have to completely ignore that 10 day forecast for Helen, that weather forecast it does not consider the hurricane path and the weather it will bring if it follows a path that comes up SC/GA line. I hope bob is right and it gets pushed east and off that track, if it does then yes it will be perfect there! lets all hope and pray for that - right now our area of SC is smack dab in the middle of the forecasted tracts and we have to prepare for evacuation for our whole family this weekend, and Atlanta is pretty much booked up by now, which means either Tennessee or Alabama for us- too bad we aren't back in Townsend again! Oh well either way I have to figure out how to evac the family and get the Teener out with us at the same time- if we get CAT3 here it will all be under water- so, might be there and might not.

Posted by: ClayPerrine Sep 6 2017, 12:44 PM

Betty and I discussed this.

We will be leaving on Wednesday and heading east on I20. For us this is a must attend event.

If they close the roads headed into the Atlanta region, then we will reasses our trip. Otherwise we are looking forward to being there.

Oh.. and Bob....

You can't schedule Okteenerfest within a week of Rennsport or Parade. We want to go to all three next year.

Right go to Ridge Road
Follow it down two stop
Signs make a left will put you in downtown Helen.

Hey Ronnie
thanks for the info. We have already secured specific parking for trailers and I've contacted everyone that said they were trailering. We have two choices: one in town and at Jake Raby's place about 25 min away. I am awaiting on directions/info on Jake's place, but in town should work for most if need be.

FYI, it's over on the corner of Dye and Unicoi. I've talked with the owner and set it all up with him.

I just looked at Irma's predicted path. The most likely path will have it just on the coast in South Carolina on Tuesday at 2am, and be down to a Category 1. It looks like only the outer bands of the storm will pass over Helen Georgia. I figure that Irma will be well up the coast by Thursday.

You guys coming down from the northeast, you may need to plan an alternate route farther inland to avoid her.

That is 13 hours and 893 miles. driving-girl.gif driving.gif Hopefully sneaking in behind Irma.

We will be at Rennsport Reunion too - possibly taking two weeks - so it won't be the weekend before or after.

When is Parade?

Problem is...due to our size and needs, our locations are becoming VERY limited and we have to go when they have room for us. I hate that we are on top of RRC but it was the only weekend the hotel had.

I probably won't be coming back out next year and will stay for RRC but I wasn't foreseeing this years to be so close to my kids - we go to Helen to float the river once a year so it was a sweet surprise. The size and effort it takes to put this on is tremendous and much appreciated - last year was my first and I had a great time! Looking forward to this one too while closely watching the weather but we're packed and ready to go! Now to get through these next 4 days (nights) of work...

driving.gif I'm leaving Saint Louis on Wed. afternoon and spending the night in Lexington, KY. Plan on leaving Lexington around 7:30 Thursday morning. driving.gif

Steven has 9 hours of driving and 563 miles.

Betty and I are leaving home in Hurst, Texas Wednesday morning, and arriving Thursday afternoon in Helen, GA.

That is 13 hours and 893 miles. driving-girl.gif driving.gif Hopefully sneaking in behind Irma.

This will be our forth (or fifth if you include MUSR11) to the Carolina/Tennesee/Georgia area for a 914 event. We did one year in two separate 914s.

Does that make us even more insane?

Probably not, I drove over 1800 miles to WCR in Mammoth Lakes, CA

We have been traveling long distances in a 914 for over 20 years....

We have done ABQ (I am not able to spell that city name) for the one and only Atomic Ramble, Salt Lake City for Parade, Vonore TN (MUSR 11), Banner Elk, NC, and Townsend TN (That one had both 914s) for Okteenerfest , Huntsville, AL for MUSR 10, and various MUSR events all over Oklahoma and Arkansas.

WCR is on our list too. And I am trying to talk Betty into driving to Rennsport, Parade and Okteenerfest next year. Parade and Okteenerfest will be in both cars.

As good fortune prevails...Phillip does not have to evacuate after all and we still will have great weather in Georgia! A true win/win...everyone travel safely!

Posted by: Philip W. Sep 9 2017, 05:53 PM

tony, we didnt evacuate, however we are not out of the woods yet, still a chance of some bad weather here monday and mostly storm surge- they dont call it the Low Country for nothin'!!
I had the car on a trailer ready take it west, when it shifted again more west we decided to stay home- my home is higher than most here, at 25' at the lower garage and man cave level - other 2 level above well out of reach of flooding, - as of now only a 6'-10' storm surge leaves us nonlonger in fear of flooding but i am higher than 90% of our area- many are still in areas that could see some flooding- nothing like Texas for sure.
Car is back in the garage and im able to get back at getting ready for the trip to Helen!

hope to see you all next week!

Annnd.... our flight was cancelled due to ATL shutting down. The explanation was excessive wind shear (ya think??) but we rescheduled for a Wednesday flight at the same time. We'll try it one more time.... except I get cheated out of 2 days with my kids. A lot easier to put up with than everyone in Florida has had it - hope they get the help and support they need quickly!

If the masses agree I will propose that you be able to enter for prizes and I will personally pay the shipping costs to get any prize you win to you.

Got the car loaded onto the trailer last night at about 1 a.m as I was packing the trailer it was about 2 a.m. when I got a call from my wife about the hurricane rolling through Georgia how bad things were going to be and it wouldn't know until it was too late if the event would be cancelled or not because I had to get on the road to make it to Utah to have work done on the car so I could even drive it. At this point I had to concede that it was probably not the best idea and the fact that if I went to Red Rocks that is only half the distance still 1200 miles I would have more time to get the car dial in and actually be able to enjoy it there. So unfortunately I will not be able to make it this year.
I was planning on bringing lots of cool stuff with me and I have had shipment of shirts already sent to the hotel that I have instructed the hotel to release them to Mike. We will get some stuff shipped out to show our love and would like to request that next year the Red Rocks event be taken into consideration and coordinated with for back-to-back weekends. I will make it to both of them and I believe I can bring a bunch of people with me driving.gif
Thoughts and prayers for everybody affected by the weather there. Be safe and I'll see you next year

Damn, sorry to hear Matt
The event was never going to be cancelled. Rain is supposed to stop in Helen today or early tomorrow, giving plenty of time to "dry out" before the weekend.

The problem with "canceling" all together would be that everything is already paid for so everyone's money would have been wasted...though we would be mailing out 120+ shirts.

Scheduling for next year is going to be interesting with Rennsport Reunion playing a disruptive role. It will really limit our weekends available. Unfortunately we usually just have to go with what the venue has available, so hopefully we can work something out. At this point, we don't even know where it will be....

I'm really sorry to hear about people cancelling, but I totally understand...especially those that have been affected directly by the hurricane. Life and family certainly needs to come first in situations like this.

Everyone stay safe and we look forward to seeing most of you on Thursday.

I have been told repeatedly that I have been remiss in reminding everyone that this year we are having a Tech Quiz as part of Okteenerfest!

Clay has put together what will undoubtedly be a challenging Tech Quiz to test your 914 knowledge.

The Tech Quiz will be administered during the Car Show from 11-12 in the Pavilion.
Each car 'team' (so those solo have a team of 1) will get one Tech Quiz.

More details as you arrive... biggrin.gif laugh.gif

Unfortunately I am out. I'll be cleaning up Hurricane debris and repairing damage.

I cancelled my room. So, there should be one available if needed.

About to leave for my 11am appointment, then I'll hit the road for a Lexington, KY overnight stay. Looks like I could hit some rain around Louisville.

Guys... Though we were not in Irma's direct path, we still got hammered during the storm. No building of car damage, but definitely a ton of property damage. The shop in Cleveland, where the Okteenerfest group is scheduled to stop by for lunch on Friday still has no power. The road in front of the shop is also closed, and likely will be for 36 more hours at least. We will also likely have no power for the next 36 hours.

Though its not official, my EMS friends locally have said we had a microburst right over the top of us, as there's a lot of damage within a 1/2 mile of the shop, but hardly anything beyond this area that compares to what we've seen. Being atop Raby Mtn didn't help anything, for sure.

We spent all day yesterday cutting up trees across both our driveways, just so we could access the building.

There are trees down all over the property, and it looks like a small war occurred. Debris is everywhere... We have very little data capability on phones and etc as cell towers are down. I'd share pics if I could.

So, no matter what, it won't be very impressive here for the group on Friday. This is disappointing, as I had planned dyno demonstrations, and etc... Now it looks like we'll be in the dark! If not in the dark, we won't have time to do more than prep an area for lunch.

Luckily we can still have lunch, though if the road is still closed we may have to go to a back up plan, which I am working with Bob to create now.

I have a couple of generators. Small Honda 2000 I could likely get in the 914. Small 1500 that will fit in 915. Larger 4,000 that is too big to get in the 914. Let me know and we could work something out. I can likely get the 2 small ones to the hotel but not the large one.

I have a decent generator running lights and the office at the shop.. The issue is the road being closed, and the fact that the property looks like green bomb went off. No way not to have a bit of a bad impression for you guys considering this.

Jake , I was just talking to Larry Mortimor and he has a 4,000 Watt generator that runs on propane that you can borrow if you need it. I'll drive it up today if you need it. Al Meredith

Thanks Al,
The problem isn't power, we could have a picnic for lunch outside the shop.

The road is closed off on both sides of the facility, and since the jail is next door the deputies are constantly giving us a hard time as we drive around the road closed signs... No way will they let this many 914s pass through.

Bob and I are working on a back up plan that will route the cars to the local church just up the road. This will disrupt the mapped out routes the least amount possible.

We can have a picnic lunch at the Church parking lot, then everyone can go on their way. This can happen even with the road closed, and even if we have no power.

More rain, but all's dry inside thanks to the 914 rubber target seal!

Gotta love Plan B's...and C in this case. barf.gif

As Jake said, we're working on an alternate plan for lunch if we have to use it. Additionally, we've learned that at least one of our main roads from our driving route is closed as of right now (which unfortunately we're on both in the morning AND afternoon) It could open by Friday, but just in case, I'll be working on a Plan late tonight to avoid it - yes...new routes using Google Maps (anyone remember 2013??)

All of these Plan B and C options will be 'game time decisions' on where we go, so you'll need to bring the directions we provide in the registration packet to the Friday AM drivers meeting (and a pen/sharpie/highlighter/crayon/blood would be helpful). I will do my best to provide as much detail as possible for any changes we need to make.

An email will go out tonight to everyone that signed up explaining where we are.

For all those that can't make it because of what you're dealing with: if you saw door prizes that Michael posted that you would like us to submit your tickets for, please email me directly to naro@carolina.rr.com so we can make sure you're covered (put Okteenerfest tickets in the subject so I don't lose it). We will ship whatever you win, no problem (unless Michael keeps it...then... dry.gif

We will also ship the shirts, and all the other 'goodies' that go with registration.

Again, so sorry you're all dealing with this...

I hate to say this but Matt's not going to make it. His window for departure is 36 hours over what would be required. As you can see from the numerous threads on the barn find build and asking about all the little gremlins on the forum, you can see that it was a monumental push to get it street ready, and it's not even 100%.

I did send a care package down and we are offering some other support that you will get once you arrive.

Wish we could be there, but will be there next year for sure.

Well got one car packed with loot and a 914 that seems reasonably operationable.

Feel just very under prepared for the trip. Not enough space, not enough time, and I hate going in light!

All I do now is start out for Helen in the morning and hope for the best.

No matter what happens with my car my wife will deliver the loot. driving-girl.gif

Betty and I are in Tuscaloosa for the night. We left home at 10 am, and it is now 9:30. We have seen a SUV gettting towed backwards causing the rear side windows to blow out, 7 different law enforcement personnel writing tickets, one idiot in a pickup well up in the triple digits on a damp road, and we have now gassed up in every state we have passed through. Betty's 914 is getting somewhere around 29 MPG, so we are impressed with that.

We have pictures, but we are way too tired to post them.

We will see you in Helen tomorrow afternoon.

OH, and Bob...

Remember what my boss says... "If plan A fails, there are always 25 more letters in the alphabet."

We will have a good time no matter what.

Posted by: BillC Sep 14 2017, 03:56 AM

Leaving now. See y'all this evening.

Posted by: ClayPerrine Sep 14 2017, 05:37 AM

I gotta say one thing about this trip. These are the simplest directions ever.

1. Go out the driveway.
2. Turn right.
3. Turn left out of our neighborhood.
4. Turn Right to get on the highway.
5. Take the I 20 East ramp.
6. Turn left at Atlanta.

We may be getting into double letter plans by the time it's all done!!

So last night I thought I turned off the sprinkler system. Had to turn it in briefly to mark the sprinkler heads as they are aerating/seeding tomorrow. Huey is on the trailer backed in the yard...and got a nice bath last night... unfortunately all it did was collect all the dirt/dust into little droplets.. sad.gif

See you all later today
