914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Engine yoke on Ebay experiences?

Posted by: bretth Apr 23 2017, 06:33 AM

I am thinking of getting this yoke as it fits my current engine stand. Anyone here buy one? The welds look a little wierd on it somehow but the pics aren't big enough to see very clearly. I will use this for my 911, 914 and possibly type 1 vw.

The problem with this one is that you can't get the oil cooler on and off A 6 with the engine on the stand. I bought the half ring adapter, made spacers and bolted it up to my harbor freight universal stand. I think it was about $150 and the time to make spacers and buy correct length bolts. I haven't tried to see if I could get flywheel on yet. Definitely less than the reproductionstamd. Look for a used ring or stand on Pelican. Look at the engine stands pelican sells.

Sorry my phone truncated the link to the ebay item. It is fixed now.

I don't understand how this yoke would interfere with the oil cooler. on a 6?

The yoke is normally attached to the case half opposite of the cooler and should have no impact on mounting or dismounting the cooler.

I just bought their 3-arm version for my 4 cylinder and really like it. I read that you can't remove/replace the flywheel and clutch while mounted on the yoke but that's not true. Clearance is a little tight for that operation but not bad, and easily doable. You have to feed the clutch alignment tool through the central tube is all. Can't speak to the oil cooler issue since I don't have a six.

BTW, this vendor advertises on Samba as vintageworldtools and prices are a bit better there: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=956239. It is the same guy, great service and fast shipping.

The ebay one is made out of something like 1/4"flat plate that mates to the edge of the case. The ring adapter or factory type are very thick and tapered in that area.

1 1/4" thick. I guess beveled is not the correct description. I made 3 1/2" spacers for the stand and I can fit the flywheel without removing engine from the stand.

I also bought from vintageworldtools, they were excellent to deal with. Quick replies to my emails and you can order what you want for arms. I also went with the 3-arm.
Its a rugged yoke.

A quarter inch does sound a little thin but maybe with a five arm setup it would be pretty sturdy?

So i bought the yoke and it seems to work pretty well. You just need to drill your own holes for the lock pin which took some time because it is fairly thick metal. Here's a pic with my old 2.2 on it.
