914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Where should we go next year ?

Since everyone is still jazzed from the fantastic event (thanks Kent) this past weekend, now seems like a good time to make some plans for next years traveling party.

We need suggestions on where to have the event?
Cities to invade? Roads to terrorize? Parking lots to party?

It would be awesome is someone is brave enough to step up to be the host / planner.

Posted by: r_towle Apr 25 2017, 08:37 PM

I would like to attend next year so please do it on a different weekend than Hershey, maybe one or two weeks later so the weather we would drive away from is not as challenging.

I sure wish I had a 914 ready to drive for the next event! Maybe 2019 idea.gif

Posted by: Coondog Apr 25 2017, 09:41 PM

How about this

Friday 10:00am meet and greet at Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix. Get a tour of the shop have a food truck show up for lunch then hit the Hwy to Payson Arz. for the night.
90 miles of fun driving, elv. 5000

Sat. Drive to Camp Verde or Clarksdale for lunch then into Sedona, Flagstaff, or Prescott for banquet.

I agree on the off Hershey weekend and not on the same weekend as Calif speed event which PMS attends.

Sunday is for peeps who want to hit other R.66 stuff.

Maybe Larmo and I will even have our cars done by then. white914.jpg

I'm guessing that not a square inch of Rt.66 hasn't been driven on previous events... What were some favorites and how long has it been since those have been driven? popcorn[1].gif

Bryce, UT?

Posted by: 914_teener Apr 26 2017, 10:07 AM

Upland-Rancho R66 museums..

R66 route backside to Angeles Crest or Big Bear

Backside Angeles Crest to Mullholland to the Beach.

This would be a lot of the old R66 and off major fwys. Could also be scheduled around the FOS weekend for those involved in PCA?

Prescott is nice as well.....and Sedona is beautiful.

Great event this last time.

I like this plan. would agree we should hit Route 66. How about on to Flagstaff then Route 66 over to Winslow. Stand on a corner, then route 87 down the beeline back to Phoenix?

Sounds interesting; would like to drive up Oak Canyon to Flagstaff for Sat banquet; then drive I40 back to CA, also puts CO peeps closer to home

Here is a potential round trip staring at Patrick Motor sports, north to Winslow and Route 66, over to Flagstaff. People can then split up if they like and head back to California or CO from Flag, or keep going South through Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, and Prescott back to Phoenix.

I'm a bit biased but I'll vote for the AZ routes biggrin.gif

However, it's already in the 90s out here so maybe up North AZ would be a bit better.

Posted by: Chris914n6 Apr 26 2017, 04:16 PM

U gave me an idea biggrin.gif

Hit up PMS either afternoon (lunch?) Friday or Sat morning. They would probable come in Sat to meet 20 914s and 30 people for a tour. Might actually appreciate us not interrupting normal work time.
Flagstaff or Winslow as a starting point Fri morning depending on trailer parking. Sat night awards at the other. Fri night in Phoenix.

My two cents, but with two events in Calif we need to get back to Arz. As far as Phx goes it's like L.A you want to be out of there by 1pm on Friday.

My only input on this is go up to Wickenburg then Prescott. Yarnell hill and the roads beyond are pretty good.

Posted by: flmont Apr 26 2017, 07:41 PM

Iam down for any run thru AZ,..

Posted by: SKL1 Apr 26 2017, 07:43 PM

Starting at PMS and up to Payson sounds great- then up to old 66 and back towards PHX on 89A from Flagg to Sedona- an INCREDIBLE road!! Could come back thru Yarnell and Wickenberg and stay off 17.

Above map sounds pretty damned good!! Not sure the 914 will make the whole trip but I'll come along in a mid engine car non the less...

Posted by: snakemain Apr 26 2017, 07:43 PM

It'll be my luck that it's AZ or somewhere close, and we'll get orders to move to the East Coast a week before.

Posted by: VegasRacer Apr 26 2017, 08:45 PM

Thanks for all of the excellent suggestions. biggrin.gif Please, keep 'em coming.

. . . Rt.66 . . . driven on previous events... What were some favorites and how long has it been since those have been driven?

We have been as far east as Albuquerque. We have hit most of 66 in Arizona including several times on the longest intact stretch of the highway from Seligman to Kingman.
Most would agree their favorite leg is from Kingman to Oatman.

It seems like the consensus is central Arizona.
We have been to Winslow twice, Prescott three times, never stayed in Sedona but driven thru a few times. Flagstaff was our city of choice multiple times. Only once have we been in Phoenix.

I love the maps, but I fear those routes may be a bit ambitious.
Two years ago we stayed in Flag. The first day we did the Grand Canyon.
The Saturday tour was Flagstaff, Sedona, Jerome, Prescott. It was a full day. (On fantastic roads.)

Posted by: VegasRacer Apr 26 2017, 09:23 PM

Another option . . . .

Start in Phoenix. Patrick Motorsports sound cool, if they will have us. Or, a quick stop a PIR for a photo opp. (maybe even a track tour) Wickenburg, Congress, lunch in Prescott. Then Skull Valley, Bagdad and on to Kingman for the night. (Yeah, it's a shit hole, but it is in the song. Plus, we have never stayed there.) ((I promise the road out of Bagdad is excellent fun.))

Day two is not as solid yet. idea.gif Rt 66 to Oatman is a must. From there we could go to Havasu or Laughlin for the banquet. Or ? ? ? We could double back, do 66 and party in Flagstaff or Winslow.

I'll do some research on eastern AZ routes. Out 60 through Globe to Safford to Eager...I've heard the drive up 191 along the NM border is worthwhile. Be good to try something new. Mount Lemmon in Tucson is also a fun drive although short...maybe we can add a southern AZ wine country tour.

Posted by: Toast Apr 27 2017, 05:24 AM

I vote Flagstaff. I know there is not much left open on the route but It's been a while since we had a Rt 66 run on actual Rt 66. Miss those days. driving-girl.gif driving.gif

I would also be more than happy to offer up mi casa for a BBQ on a Thursday if people want to start in PHX a night early. I will say that spring can be $$$ for hotels in the area but we have plenty of room for tents biggrin.gif

Michael,

I'd be down with any of those, I'd prefer #1 (maybe via Carefree instead of Grand Ave) and #2. Lots of nice twisty roads and not much freeway.

Thanks for doing the footwork. If you need some help, let me know (I realize this is probably 10-11 months away).

OK - here's a plan that includes Rt 191

#5
PMS tour Friday AM
Friday Drive PHX > Safford (165 miles)
Overnight in Safford
Saturday Drive Safford > Show Low via Rt 191 (210 miles)
Awards dinner Saturday night in Show Low
Sunday - go home through Phoenix via Rt 60 through the Salt River Canyon (another top 10 AZ motorcycle road -- 175 miles to Phx) OR via Rt 40 (50 miles north of Show Low)
So round trip starting and finishing in Phx is 550 miles and as far as I can tell we don't touch Rt 66. I'm game is the group is...Talk amongst yourselves

Drive home will be a little longer but will likely be driving thru the desert in the morning instead of late afternoon. NV UT CO NM folks can do rt 191 again biggrin.gif

I talked with James Patrick today. He is all in for a meet and greet. We will hook up next week to pin down some Friday dates that this group can choose from. Dates I am looking at are late March or early April. Remember we will have to work around his race weekends.

If we do route 5 because of my suggestion of 191 let me just say it was a hard beautiful drive. We traveled from north to south and if memory serves it to almost 3 hours to go from Hannagan meadows were we stayed the night to the 10. We were in a jetta not a 914 but it was still fun. Their was a sign reading " don't get out of your car wolf rehabilitation area." We saw big horn sheep and lots of deer in the road but no wolf's. This is a link to were we stayed http://www.hannaganmeadow.com/ they have a small cafe it might be a good lunch stop

You mean the part in Illinois? The farther east you have it the better chance I have of getting there. By east I mean maybe New Mexico.

Posted by: shoguneagle Jul 29 2017, 04:08 PM

I like the idea of the Carefree highway from Phoenix to Flagstaff. To me any route 66 label should touch base the majority of the time with Route 66. The problem for Arizona people is that there is only so much of Route 66 you can see over the years and they want to see other Arizona drives.

Any one of the recommended routes has great driving and will meet the needs of most of the members. I lived in Flagstaff for eight years and have driven everyone of the roads mentioned. All great stuff!!

I would attend any place near I-40 south. I am coming from New Mexico and will only be able to attend the Saturday night event and meeting up with you somewhere enroute during the day.

we still have to complete the Route 66 California from Barstow on into Santa Monica; and, from Joplin, MO to Chicago, Ill.

As always, this is great event and should be attended by as members as possible.

Hi Steve - thanks for your input. I agree with pretty much everything you say. I'm one of those who wants to try a new route having driven the Flag/Payson/Winslow/Prescott routes numerous times. Any new route that can start in Phoenix (such as Rt 191 in eastern AZ) does not touch Rt 66 (AFAIK). I have no favorite and therefore want to select a route that is enjoyable in a 914 while maximizing participation. I'll get serious in planning after RRC. Let's continue to bump this thread so when the time comes to nail down the route I'll have input from attending members.
Thanks,
Michael

I recently visited the town of Williams, AZ which is 30 miles west of Flagstaff on Route 66. Williams is very much a town built on the themes of Rt 66-Classic Cars and Trains. Cool Main Street with lots of hotels/diners/shops/train-car stuff. I’m going to contact the town tourism person (not sure who that is yet) and see how they feel about hosting our group on Friday and Saturday nights. This option includes approx 100 miles of driving Route 66. Friday would includes lots of twisties/mountain roads and Saturday would be more straight highway/interstate.

Sorry for the sideways photos...I can't figure out why some turn while others don't...

Route 6:
Arrive Phoenix Thursday PM or early Friday
PMS tour Friday AM
Friday Drive PHX > Wickenburg > Prescott > Williams (182 or 238 miles - see below)
Overnight in Williams
Saturday Drive Williams > Kingman (lunch) via 90 miles of Route 66 > Williams via I-40 (243 miles / 3hr 55m according to Google)
Awards dinner Saturday night in Williams
Sunday - game over, go home

I'm up for either of the routes, especially 89A from Sedona to Flagg, unless I'm behind a Winnebago...

Probably will drive the Spyder though as not sure I trust the 914 that far from home... (at least it is mid-engine)

Michael,
Either would be great! We did the Williams-Kingman-Oatman-Laughlin run back in 2011 and its a cool drive.
Experience tells me the 182 miles on Fri might be better after an AM tour as we will make stops etc.

Here's what I got
TENTATIVE DATES:Thur April 19 - Sun April 22, 2018
Begin in Phoenix; ends in Williams, AZ

Thurs: Arrive Phoenix PM; BBQ at MOVEQIK's house (to be confirmed) or local watering hole.

Friday: PMS tour is iffy but if it happens that will be the morning agenda. If not the Phoenix Open Wheel Racing Museum is in the same area and I have a buddy who will give us a private tour. After tour, drive west on I-10 to Vulture Mine Road (good twisties) then north to Prescott via Highway 89 with a stop at the Granite Mountain Hotshot's Memorial ( https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjT8ZT-xYzXAhVoi1QKHan5D38QFggmMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fazstateparks.com%2Fhotshots%2F&usg=AOvVaw0Wf8rwkETWY55vEvZ2GFA_ subject of the 2017 movie Only The Brave). 165 miles/3h13m.

Saturday: Depart Prescott at 9:14 and head up 89A (more twisties) to Williams, AZ driving thru Jerome, Cottonwood, Sedona, and Flagstaff with a lunch stop to be planned. Banquet Sat night in Williams on Route 66. 123 miles/2h55m

Hotels, restaurants, etc. still need to be worked out.

Looks like a great route especially 89A... and I'll probably be in a 981 Spyder (at least it's mid-engine). And it won't conflict with the Indycar race in early April at PIR.

Forest- trying to figure out where that picture was taken...can't see any seguaro cactus so wonder if it's AZ??

Posted by: worn Nov 5 2017, 09:58 AM

Just asked the map program for an estimate. 25-27 hours 1 way. Around 1800 miles to get there. On the other hand it sounds fun.
I am not wild about the big cities - my mom had a place in Apache Junction and the hour of quick moving freeway needed to cross Phoenix from the airport to her place was a bit demoralizing.
Is the plan to spend the first night on the outskirts? The drives all sound great. I am leaning towards running out in the 3.2, but I put headers not heat exchangers on it. Maybe the lower level runs will make that work out.

Rt 66 will definitely be in the plans for next year, and thanks for stopping when you saw me on the side of the road on Sunday, just taking some final pics. Okteenerfest 2018 might be in same place as 2017, worth the trip, excellent roads in that area (northeast Georgia), you should plan on spending extra time to check out the area. Another event you should consider is the Texas Hill Country Rallye - it's for air cooled Porsche's up to 1989 - held 3rd or 4th weekend in March. See you next year.
