914World.com _ 914World Garage _ What Gauge sheetmetal are they made from?

Posted by: GWN7 May 8 2005, 11:16 PM

I need a piece of front channel (drip edge) for the front trunk and have a buddy that has a metal shop. He will make me some new edges but asked what gauge material they are.

What was used to build the cars incase I need him to make something else?

My understanding it that the metal size is metric so doesn't really fit into that scale. 18 gauge is a little thicker, but pretty close.

16 ga is what Ive been told. I had some stuff welded up on my car in 16 ga and it matched really well.

IIRC, 914's are made of two steel thicknesses. the structural stuff is 1,0mm - and laminated in thicker weldments as needed. the body panels are 0,7mm

---edit update--- Jeroen has corrected me that it's 0,8mm.
just wanted to make sure this post doesn't get taken out of context some day and cause confusion.---

16 ga is much thicker what's used in at least 95% of the car.

16 ga is much thicker than what's used in at least 95% of the car. Sorry.
