My stock 1.7 w code motor is being built and will run twin 40 webers. The engine came with a distributor with the following part number 022 905 205 H and part of the fuel injection on it.
It has a vac advance and appears to be in excellent condition inside.
Will the above carb / dizzy combo work?
If not what set up have people found to work best based on my set up?
it will work, but maybe not "best" for your setup
- the more important item is what cam you are using in your build ??
the D-jet cam is no good for your webers
if you have different more aggressive cam, you'll want to have your distributor curved to match it's characteristics
whatever you do - DO NOT get a "009" distributor
an "034 SVDA" would be a better option -
just go to eBay & search for "034 svda"
and - google it - you'll find lots of folks on The Samba who know a lot about what you want to do
Thanks for the advice. Had problems with 009's in the past so will steer clear of them.
I didn't want to have to split the case but if i must so be it. If i do replace the cam (assuming next size up from standard) do i need to replace lifters & rods?
Ideally i want to keep the engine as stock 1700 as possible without pumping it up in combustion size.
Any suggestions from people who have built and run this?
If the idf's require too much work is there a twin set up alternative.
I've been on the samba but i seem to find power builds.
yes - replace the cam & lifters as a set, pushrods are not an issue,
you want a cam that is designed for carbs - google this for several good links
"camshaft for type 4 with carbs"
and be wary of bolt-on replacement cam gears since they can "come loose" and make a terrible knocking sound - be sure you properly secure the bolts & use loctite
split the case: most of us old-timers have btdt on these matters - hard knocks of experience when we had no internet to ask answeres of
I'd build it with a better cam, mild carb cam for a small displacement engine. A Web 86 or scat C-25 are mild carb cams without the huge lifts of bigger cams.
If too late for a cam change I'd bite the bullet and do a stock 1.7, or 1.8 L-jet or MS EFI system. For the MS I'd mod the runners a 2.0 plenum TB and air cleaner assembly.
Weber's I'd use a mallory red cap dizzy, new or you can buy used and mod the points to the unilight or a pertronix ignitor.
2nd choice for cheap I'd use a L-jet bus or 914 dizzy and block off the vac advance.
3rd choice(s) would be something like the 123 dizzy or a megajolt jr ignition.
Wow, I hope my car doesn't read some of the advice here.
I run a stock cam in my 1.7 with dual EMPIs.
I also have a 009.
Car runs awesome!!
