914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Video: Papa Smurf at SCCA race

Posted by: naro914 Jun 8 2017, 07:26 AM

Since I keep being told you like my videos, here's another.

Last weekend I ran my first SCCA Club Race. Previously, I had only run Papa in PCA races and one SCCA time trial. This video is from the Sunday Group 3 Sprint Race with CCR SCCA at Carolina Motorsports Park. Papa Smurf runs in GT2 class... against all the "Big Bore" American Iron/NASCAR/Trans Am cars.

With old, worn out tires (used 3 days at PCA race at road Atlanta)and shifting issues, I managed to qualify 2nd in the entire group both Saturday and Sunday. By Sunday, the tires were shot and lap times tumbled to more than 6 seconds slower than on Saturday. Plus...there started to be a shifting issue on Sunday were shifting from 2nd to 3rd was difficult. There are at least 3 turns at CMP where 2nd gear is needed, so that again made racing "interesting"...

This video is a great example of how a good handling car (albeit with no grip tires) can perform against raw horsepower on a tight road course...

Notice a few times I had some agricultural excursions. ... :-)

When I watch this video, I feel like it's in slow motion. When grip sucks in a tight course, everything is slower because you come out of tr turns slower, you straight line speed suffers, etc...

Enjoy...

Hey Bob,
do you "heel and Toe" on the downshifts, I couldn't tell from the sound?

Posted by: brant Jun 8 2017, 10:48 AM

Bob,

what kind of data and camera system are you using

I think I need to do some upgrades with mine and researching options

Yes most of the time, but not always. Honestly....if I'm lazy and not pushing it really hard, I sometimes don't. Especially when I'm having shifting issues since heal-toe requires timing and timing is way off if the gear won't engage...

At the moment, we just have an old AIM Smartycam. It does data and video together but not HD. I also have a AIM Solo in the dash which is what we really use for the data traces, and I like the display data. The Smartycam is more for video but has the nice gps data feed in the videos.

We got the old Smartycam because 1) it was cheap and 2) Nadine has started doing some data analysis with our local DE group and the Smartycam is a simple all-in-one system she can just put into a car with a suction cup.

I plan on getting an AIM MXL2 and Smartycam HD one of these days.

As a side.... I am working at building NaroEscape Motorsports as a parts/safety equipment supply company and will be carrying all of the AIM data products...I have access to them all now, just don't have the website built yet.

Couldnt you run one gear lower in the slower sections? Feels like you have to wait a bit for the car to come into the power when exiting onto the straights?

Or maybe it just feels like that when watching the video because the car infront pulls away so fast?

Very fun to watch—and cool to see different kinds of cars go at it. Thanks for a little late-night diversion from work, Bob! smile.gif

That was the problem...I was having issues going from second to third. Sometimes it just wouldnt go into third gear so I would almost come to a stop fighting with it...so I just ran 3rd and 4th. When I made the pass stick, I tried 2nd and it worked fine going to third. Need to figure out what's wrong because that issue just started in Sunday morning.

Just for comparison purposes, this was my fastest lap in Saturday qualifying. I could use 2nd better so you can see it looks a bit faster.

Honestly...I was still figuring out my gearing. First time running with the 915 trans so all the shift points are different from the 901...

Thank you for sharing. Great video. I saw you hit 120 at the end of the straight.

Great driving.

Always fun to watch your impressive driving skills... smilie_pokal.gif

Bummer about the shifter.. then again, if you ran a V8 like your competitors, you would have been able to use just 2 gears more effectively wink.gif

I don't want Bob to be short-changed...I saw "122" - he paid for every one of those M.P.H's!

Keep in mind...this is CMP. Barely use 4th, never 5th...

Oh, and I only have a little 6 cylinder engine...not one of those big honkin V8's...

What is your power to ratio? Have any idea what the other cars power to ratio?

Nice video!

Posted by: crash914 Feb 14 2018, 06:35 PM

Nice to see when your tires heated up, 1.5g's I don't think any of the big cars can pull those....

I guess it was just you two at the track? looked like you had it all to yourselves. great job!

There were actually about 20 cars... I skipped over a lot of the boring parts in the video...lapping cars is not exciting...
