914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 914 Scooby conversion/ parts/ one month race car build?

Posted by: Fastmover Jun 26 2017, 01:18 PM

Long time lurker here, 1st time poster....

I have a unique situation, a large goal and short time to complete said goal.

I have researched and spent hours reading several of y'all's threads on converting your teeners to a suby powertrain.

I have roughly a month to complete a conversion, plus cage and full suspension.

I found cold water, and thought my issues were solved, but it seems he isn't active at the moment. Soooo here it is..... does any of y'all have any conversion parts that would be for sale to help speed up my process? Specifically a cradle, 5 lug conversion stuff, cable shift, axles, and tranny mounts.

I have an ej25, and a 5mt 2wd conversion tranny, and radiator and fans, this 914 is being built to race in the upcoming 24hr chump race at vir, then hopefully some AER and NASA and possibly SCCA.

This chassis is a 73, and I do believe one of the original owners had a thread on all the work he had done to it, but at the end he had to slap it together and sell due to relocating out of country?
I will try to locate that thread and add it here to refresh everyones memory of the car.

Any help, parts or suggestions will be welcomed, but please refrain from the brow bashing of not keeping the car original, because the goal of this build and car is to have fun with it and expand the cars role in the future, maybe a full 6gt conversion, who knows, but this is the first step!

Thanks in advance

Update: here is the chassis that we ended up picking up for this build.

Hello from the UK,
I fitted a Subaru 2.5 and then changed to a 2.0 Turbo to my VW van( see link below) I've pretty much done this subject to death, I know it's not a 914 (i have one though) and if you need any tips give me a shout. My van is probably one of the fastest street vans in the UK !
Watch the video below to get some installation tips.

Thank You, Nice van!
I actually have some subarugears product in my 2wd 5mt tranny that's being assembled by subieworks out in California!

I'm sure I'll have question sooner or later, just trying to get all the needed parts for this build hammered out now

Go to https://smallcar.com/vanagon/subaru-vanagon-conversion-parts/subaru-4-cyl-vanagon-4wd-engine-mount-powder-coated.html

This will mount to a 914 engine bar from a tail shifter. BTW, they will sell just the pieces you need if you call them and tell them that your doing a conversion.

It was used on PORSTI build, and the auto-x redo of the shitbox.

The rear hangers you just have to make, they are pretty easy depending on what you want to do with it.

Outfront, can build a stinger and the harness for you. They can also do the exhaust as they do them for mid engine buggies.

Shifter go with an MR2 up front and then a kit from here. And grab this from http://zerodecibelmotorsports.com/products/bell-crank-mechanism-5spd/

Or you can look in the classifieds and a cold water kit might show up there confused24.gif

That is pretty much it, for the fast track.

Tangerine racing for the roll cage btw.

If you only have a month, then you need to buy a completed car nversion and use the month to sort it. It takes months (many) just to sorce the parts.

914forme,
thank you for the pointers, I did see the smallcar mount using the factory engine bar and I may very well go that route, but if I can find a cradle already made, I would prefer that. I'm hoping to come across a solution that keeps me from having to make one myself strictly due to time considerations.
I will be making the cage myself while I'm waiting on parts to arrive.

I'm picking up the engine and stinger and other goodies from A&P Mech, that takes care of many hurdles, I will keep his engine as a spare for the engine I already have.

mepstein, True in regards to buying someone elses project, but I learned a long time ago, that usually has its own challenges, plus I'm very picky on quality of work, so some things I'd rather do on my own.

Besides this challenge of completing this build in a months time and then putting it through a crucible like a 24hr endurance race just seems to be a healthy challenge!!!

At this moment I need to source 5 lug conversion, axles and wheels.

original post updated with the thread of the chassis we picked up for this challenge.

Take a look at Jim Kelly's thread. He is working on a cradle. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265392&st=180

For five lug conversion parts, suspension and everything brake related check out PMB. Eric Shea is the owner of the business and one of the most amazing people I have ever done business with. The quality and customer service he provides is unmatched by any company that I have ever worked with before. http://www.pmbperformance.com/catalog.html

Take a look at 914Rubber. Great guys and a good selection of parts.
http://www.914rubber.com

Send a PM to Rnellums if you need a transmission block off plate or a hydraulic clutch mounting bracket.

Can anybody that has don't the cable shift set up tell me if my measured
cable length sounds correct? I'm coming up with 86-88 inches?

does that sound reasonable? what length did y'all come up with?

Posted by: jimkelly Jun 27 2017, 04:13 PM

this guy just did it and said 7' +-

Thanks jimkelly!
My measurement that I came up with was 85" so one inch difference isn't too bad.

I ordered from this place, cables, linkage and it comes with a shifter designed together as a complete set.

By the way A&PMech suggested I reach out to you in regards to a cradle, are you making cradles? If so can I order one? I read your thread and have seen your design and believe it would work well.

look forward to hearing what you come up with with axles. bigkat and sawtooth and others have used dutchman to respline one end of the subaru axle and change its overall length as well.

see post 324
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=87326&st=300
but your length and maybe even number of splines may vary.

I came across this thread from PMB, and is what I'm planning on doing, just waiting on the 5mt transmission to arrive so I can measure the distance between output flange to output, and compare to the same measurement on the stock tranny, so I can confirm if these 20.25 axles will work or if I need a different length

there is also this thread which i think is a less expensive conversion?

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=80641

but both threads are porsche to porsche i believe.

Jim
It was nice meeting you today, and thank you for bringing the cradle you made with you!
It came out nice and will make this conversion easier! Anyone thinking of completing this type of swap should grab a cradle from Jim while he still makes them!!!

I'll post more Pics soon
