I promised Kent I'd do this one.
I have the toe plates and tools and string.
It takes about an hour or so. Main thing is setting up the square and then the math.
Need a very flat surface tho.

Kent,
The toe plate is used to measure castor angle and an angle reference.
If you mean rear shims then yea.....bring as many different thickness you can. Those are tricky to put in as you know if the bolts haven't been soaked with PB Blaster. So whomever wants to do theirs as an example make sure that they are not rusted in place or no go. Soak them for a couple of days with PB. You don't want those breaking off.
The go carts look freakin cool.
Thanks Oscar for doing this.

Very good point. Those attending may want to begin the PB Blaster soak, now! I have a few extra shims I'll bring. Other's; pls do the same if you have some laying around. Just clean them of dirt, debris and rust. PM me with anything else I can bring for this forum. Any other ideas for a Tech Forum? No reason not to have another one run concurrently. Not everyone will be up for the alignment forum. I see a lot of folks are intimidated by welding. Those of us that do weld could bring our helmets for others to view instructors welds and then do some hands on welding themselves. I'm sure there are guys that would enjoy an intro to welding. Welding "intros" forums are usually received with a great deal of enthusiasm.

Count me and my dad in tentatively. so two people, and two 914's. We have a race in Sonoma two weekends after, so assuming there it nothing bad happening with the car, we should be there.
Also, I weld, have a welder, and can give MIG tutorials. if someone can bring a bunch of cleanish scrap steel, I can give demos.

Kudos to you guys organizing & tech'ing at this gathering!
As an FYI for those who want to make a full day of Porsche Fun, the San Diego PCA Concours is that same morning/early afternoon down at Spanish Landing Park on San Diego Harbor (opposite Lindbergh Field airport) 9/16/17 9:00 - 2:30 pm.
Display (Corral & Timeline) is FREE & you can ask to be put near the entrance to leave early around/after their Lunch to make it by 1:pm for this. Even if you're entering a judged Division/Class, you can probably leave by 12-12:30-1-ish - once judging is finished - & just ask someone to get your award for you, or they'll get it to you later.
It would be nice to have a strong 914 presence there again.
At this point I don't know if I'll be in town then, & if I am, then I'll probably judge, but may have to do some business after the show - but would try to stop by afterwards if I can.
I won't know my schedule for Sept. until Aug/early-Sept., & then if it's too late to sign-up/pay, I could just stop by to visit a bit on my way back to OC, if I am here & "if I'm free - or at least reasonable" ;-) - that day.
In any case, it wouldn't be in my 914, but one of the other cars.
Cheers! Tom ///////

Ok I've added Mark S (Euro911) and Don (don-6) to the list.
Check POST #11 for full list.
By the way I've sent messages to Mike D. to get a head count and I've not been able to get a response. Does anyone here know him? If so, tell him we need a head count.

Tom we would love to see you at the event. Price is $15 at the door or $10 pre-registered. Guaranteed that you won't be able to eat this good for $10 anywhere in SoCal.......not to mention see over 21 914's confirmed to be in attendance.

PS -
I forgot to remind all y'all that you can enter the SDR Concours for judging, your engine modded 914 in Special Categories SC-3 - whether it's a transplant of a Porsche, Subie, Chev, Mopar, or lawnmower motor!
Also, Friday Nite Aug. 4th is German Car Nite at Escondido's "Cruisin' Grand" - try to get there early & give yourselves time to park & cruise both the cars & the Pubs & Eateries there, but you can come-n-go anytime during the evening.
No, it won't be the great food deal of this event!
If you can, plan on taking the day or 1/2 day to beat the Friday traffic.
It's a fun event, & my wife & I will be meeting up with a couple of my old HS buddies & their wives from San Diego (I was Uni HS `70 - they from Clairmont HS `69 & `72), maybe a few others.
It would be cool to get a good 914 contingent there too, if you can get the time off, & there are local hotels/motels with reasonable rates - if it's a long drive for you, or in case you crawl too many Pubs!
I'll bump the topics I made on Cruisin Grand & make one for SDR Concours this evening, or update the older one.
Cheers! Tom ///////

That's a deal at twice the price!
Where is the ranch venue relative to Old Town Temecula, or the Pechanga Casino (for the die hard gamblers out there), &/or the Temecula Creek Inn? I know where those are, so as a reference for me.

Sure Tom...near intersection of Rancho California and Butterfield Rd.
Those remind me of some similar wheeled Luge/Carts running in a GFR Cement 1/2 pipe set-up on the slopes at Park City back in the 1970s - I have no idea if they still have them up there now in the warm months, but if so, that's closer than Calgary ALB!
You'd take your "sled" on the chairlift to the top, & ride them down the 1/2 pipe at 60-70+ mph top end, & hope that you didn't go airborne, launched off the curves with the help of the ramp effect of the 1/2 pipe's curve!
We used to do them on the post tournament day(s) at the September Park City Rugby Tournament - it was verboten pre-tourney & on playing days cuz several guys went airborne & broke bones! Imagine 12 teams of 20-25 Rugby players jamming the lines, lifts & slopes/track in the mad quest for speed at all costs.
Hint - the bigger/heavier guys - & those who weighted themselves with rocks/etc. - got more speed, caught more air, & broke more bones!
It was fun nonetheless, but don't know if I'd try it today at almost 65!
If they still have them at some of the Ski Resorts in CA, Rockies, etc. - then maybe a field trip to it off or the Red Rocks, Rte 66, WCR, etc. gatherings.
Did anyone check during WCR at Mammoth last month?
PS - this track & their carts on the video are much more civilized than the ones we rode, which was a basic plastic wheeled sled with a nylon rope to pull back on the brakes, which braking was marginal at best - compared to these.
Thanx for sharing Mark! Tom ///////

We could use volunteers that day, mostly to assist in parking and go cart safety, so if okay I will have you listed as our parking official and tech session organizer.

This route is 45 miles. I estimate that it should take about 1:30 hours. It winds through twisty mountain terrain and then through the valley in the wine country with rolling hills and curves

My wife's 50th b day

My wife just celebrated #59
Posted by: ValcoOscar Jul 22 2017, 08:49 AM
I just found this...it's been nearly 30 years.
It would be nice if some of these past 914 guys were on 914world, even better if they registered to come to our Temecula 914 Fun Day event. I know of one for sure, possibly two if Leamon decides to come.
Anybody recognize these names?

Well, I see Leamons name on there! And Dean Vanni, Don and I saw him several years ago. His 914-6 had become a trailer queen because he couldn't stand it getting dirty after all the work he put into it. And this was before $80K days!

Car is not on jackstands!
Posted by: Tom_T Aug 5 2017, 10:59 AM
FYI for those looking for something fun to do the night before, "just over the hill" about a 30 min drive is Escondido's Cruisin Grand car night, & y'all could make an unofficial 914 night parking on Grand (renegade), or take any car & enjoy the featured Racers & other cars.
Hmmmm.... Maybe putting vinyl race numbers & decals on your 914s will get you into the featured section!
I just PP'ed you for 4 + 6% PayPal fee - for me & possibly wife & may guest/wife TBD. If it ends up that I &/or other 1-3 can't make it, then just consider it my donation to the cause.
If I'm able to get there after judging at the PCA San Diego Region Concours at Spanish Landing park that morning, & if anyone there is interested in learning more about PCA Zone 8 Concours, then I'd be happy to talk about it & demo on someone's car.
If my good ole fellow Orange CA buddy "SoCalAnal" ... err .... SoCalAndy has his 914-6 there, then I can pick on him & his car, but he can also speak to the CW prep & resto, & so can Kent if he's coming, as well as a few others on the list.
We also gave info for the event to a few old but now inactive 914world members who were at Escondido's Cruisin Grand German car nite last night, so hopefully they'll come on here. Keep bumping so it's easy for them to find the thread.
PS - That would be with something other than my 914.
Cheers! Tom ///////

Oscar, I notice that you mentioned "vendors" in earlier post. Will attendee's be allowed to sale their wares, as well? Sort of like the old G&R events used to do.

You are absolutely correct!!!!...We have not publicized this yet, but were planning to gauge interest in doing exactly this. I say why not, we can have this a bit earlier in the day or when event starts. I have tables to set things on. More stuff the merrier.
I personally have extra 914 and other porsche items I could part with.
Attendees should chime in so we can define time.

Excellant. Following past years experience (members often listed what they were bringing or what the needed before the event) I will bring a pair of "DD quality" late bumper tops, a targa vinyl kit, a 914 shifter knob and a cut out 901 case for setting gear stacks, a new side mirror w/ slight blemish + more. Thanks for the opportunity to sale/trade Oscar; this stuff has been accumulating for a couple of years now. I'm in the market for a spare set of outer door handles, a rear metal valance, a nice belly pan or anything shiny.

I may be going into paint in as early as 3 weeks so I will start my list as follows:
I could probably use your Sail Panel Vinyl kit if its new from 914 Rubber and mirror if its OEM along with a straight front hood (no rust) Also any targa and sail panel trim pieces in better condition than mine.
I also have available a signal orange rear trunk lid in good condition. (some small dents, but no rust or bondo)
Butterfly Horn Pad (2) rebuilt '73-'74 rebuilt 2.0 injectors more to follow once I get the car torn down.

Carlos, Rudy, Eddy and myself met over breakfast this AM and did a little tuning to Carlos' already excellent schedule. Wait until you see some of what Carlos has in store for you. It just keeps getting better. I'll post a map and a link to same in the next 48hr's that the early birds will drive. It is a hair over 1.5hrs round trip.

Okay all-
One month away. Here is what we have planned...plus some surprises.
Kent will coordinate morning drive...details to follow.
I will post weekly updates and will send PM's to all that have registered.
Like Eddy said...get your cars off the jack stands and come on over.
Don't miss Rudy's award winning BBQ not to mention local wine favorites.
Bring some porsche or 914 items to trade/sell/donate. Lots of room!!!!!
Oscar, Sorry I missed this Saturday but.......... I don't think 1 hr for 2 tech sessions will work out. The alignment alone will take an hour. And I'm pretty sure the welding segment will take some time because there will be lots of peeps wanting to try their hand at it. Also, if we have 3 or more welders there Ethan will need some assistants, Maybe have one in the AM and the other in the PM? Thoughts?

Kent-
Totally open to any ideas as to not rush tech sessions...accidents happen that way. BTW, a minimum of two welders committed. Weld kits are ready.
We will listen to attendees and will make necessary schedule changes.
Thanks for your 2 cents

Hello everyone.....we are coming up on THE date. We are looking forward to a great time of 914 fun. However we have some loose ends that need to be tied up. There are some that signed up, but have not paid yet. Please look at post #11 and if you don't have a RED paid stamp, PM me to let me know that you are still coming so that we can purchase the right amount of pulled pork and tri-tip. We did not go cheap here with burgers and hot dogs yet we did go very cheap on the charge.....so please let me know so that we can buy accordingly.

Thank you Noel. FWIW, if you have a smart phone; click on the link and there is an option to send that link to your cell phone. It will show the street names so you know the route. Having learned my lesson from previous runs: there will be a driver's meeting 5 min's before departure. If you run late, use this map to catch up with us or enjoy the cruise solo. Notice we will depart on schedule and with the schedule being tight we will not be able to "wait for you".

I live pretty much smack in the middle of the loop on the drive. For those who have not done it yet, it's a lot of fun! Specially the route between Temecula and Valley Center, going into and through the Pala reservation. Winding, tight corners and some pretty cools views all around.
If you were on the wall about the drive, you definitely should do it. You'll enjoy it.

If you were on the wall about the drive, you definitely should do it. You'll enjoy it.
Hey Folks,
Just be careful going through the Rez guys, cuz you don't want to take out any kids, Elders, or anybody. It is their residential area & you don't want to give Teeners a bad name with the Indian Community nor any community for reckless driving thru such areas.
Not to be a downer, but as a Cherokee Indian myself, I'm super sensitive to BS hi-jinks which has gone on on Indian Rez's all over the country for decades. It's not fun nor funny to terrorize Indians.
Just Sayin'! Have fun, but be safe & look out for other folks on all parts of your drive.

No worries. We are in town and a populated area when we pass thru the reservation so we'll by at 35mph. This is a good time to address this so here goes. The drive is just that; a drive. Not a race. Go to the track for that. That being said there is some spirited driving but not competitive racing. The last drive I had to ask the guy behind me to drop back about #7 in line. He stayed on my bumper like he wanted to pass me or race me and blocking my side mirror view of the people I was leading. I couldn't tell if someone that I was responsible for had dropped behind or not. To add insult to injury he was in a 4 banger.

I'm bringing some give away stuff.
I need to clean out the garage.
1. Old door panels. vinyl is like new and can be reused. I did these as a quick recover over the stock panels so if someone needs the vinyl should be okay. Otherwise gonna toss them.
2. Various rubber and 1.7 parts.
I'm towing my car down to make room in the bed of my truck so any other stuff I'm gonna toss in.

Come on Tom, who do you think you are addressing? Weather you are Indian or not, is of no relevance. Talk about a comment from left field.

I'd be happy to take the panels off your hands. both of mine need to be replaced so, it would work out perfectly.
I'll send a PM.

Blue,
My only point was to make sure that everyone exercises due caution when passing through the Rez. Kent's reply to my post was the proper one.
Unfortunately all of the Rez's along that valley have had bad experiences with joy riders & Ricky racers screaming through the Rez cuz they think that the cops won't do anything to them when on the Rez. It's been going on since before we moved to San Diego in '63 & since, & one of my daughter's best friends was killed by some hot rodding a-hole in 2009 on the Jamul Rez.
So I beg to differ that my warning was from "left field" - but I do agree that it should not matter whether or not anyone is Indian or not to be careful & considerate while going through the Rez!
As an Indian, I may be more sensitive to such issues than you are, but then you haven't lived with 65 years of prejudice .... having rednecks in an 18 wheeler trying to chase you down in a gutless VW Westy with your 2 kid's on board, or refused service in several SoCal Denny's (as if Denny's should be uppity),etc., etc.
Different perspectives I guess, but Thanx, for setting this ole Injun straight on that point!

Hey Oscar, there is a 2.5 hr gap between 10:30 - 1:00. Maybe we could have one of the tech sessions squeezed in rather than having them at the same time. That way no one has to decide which one they want to attend. What do you think? Kent

Never realized until just now the swap meet was going to be so early. I thought this thing started at 1:00 -7:00 pm with only the drive in the morning for those wanted to. Guess I missed something along the way because I printed out the original flier from the beginning. Bummed cuz I have something going in the morning and will now have to miss the swap. My buddy & his wife had a change in plans, & won't be joining us. So you can cover 2 deserving/needy folks at the gate with 2 of the 4 which I prepaid.
My wife Jana & I will have a lunch with them down in Escondido where they live instead, then hit the BBQ in Temecula on our way north to home in OC.
However, I don't know if we'll make it there before the food ends at 5:30, so you may have to set some aside for us for when we get up there.
Cheers! Tom ///////

Good question. We have plenty of shade, no need for an umbrella.

Forecast is for 82° ... but we all know how that goes ...
Posted by: 76-914 Sep 11 2017, 10:35 AM
The Wx will be perfect. It should not reach 82 until 2PM. Should be a couple of degrees cooler where we will be. This would be considered a cold front in Texas.

I don'tknw about that TX cold front Kent!?
One time when I was commuting to the Dallas office of the company I then worked for on a December trip, & it was in the 90's for the 1st 3 days that week, then overnight it SNOWED 2-3"!
I asked: "What was going on with their weather there!?" of one good ole boy Specification Writer in the office there who was a classic Texan, dressing everyday in his boots, Wrangler jeans, big ole belt buckle, cowboy style dress shirt & 10 gallon hat .... think of a thin Hoss from the Ponderosa TV show & let that image sink in for a minute .... & his reply in that slow Texas drawl was:
"Well Tom, we don't have but one electrified barbed wire fence between here & the Canada, so when that ole wind decides to blow south, she just blows & brings everything with her! But .... if you don't like the weather now, just wait an hour or so."
Sure enough, then next day the snow was all melted & it was in the 80's!
Also, weather predictions then & there, were & are no better than here & now .... so hopefully it actually stays moderate for the 16th!

Guys and Gals-
I am starting to prepare MEMBER name tags for this event. Other attendees will have hand written name tags.
Please review and let me know if I missed anyone, or if there are corrections.
Thanks,
Oscar
Can someone open and repost these so you don't have to open ea file??
I know Ethan is twice as smart as the rest of us but he shouldn't get two name tags.

Spoke to Oscar on Monday and wanted to advise that three more plan to attend. My friend Jay who is a 914 & 911 owner and 2 of his P-Car friends from San Diego. I will confirm by Thursday so you have an accurate head count.
Looking forward to this event!
Just spoke to Jay and his group of 3 are confirmed. I gave him Oscar's Paypal address so you should get that shortly.
I believe his 914 just sold so I think they will be arriving in 911s.

What a fantastic event. A very special thank you to Oscar and family! I can't remember ever attending such a well organized event; ever! Unbelievable in every detail. It was greatly appreciated by all attending. I heard more than one mention how great it was. This had all the makings of any event I've attended w/o the 800 mile drive. Bravo. Thanks to Rob and Ethan for the tech sessions. I'll be aligning my car in the near future since attending Rob's clinic. As always the event is about the people and this one was no exception. Great people and fantastic food; thank you Rudy. I believe their is a Texan in your blood line. You are a grille master my friend. As told Oscar, " After this they're going to be writing songs about you Oscar".

Oscar, Rudy, Eddy, Kent, and all of the organizers of this event deserve special kudos for all of their generosity. This was a well organized time for all, in a wonderland location.
I hate to even ask, but can we make this an annual event? Please?

Oscar and Elvira thank you for opening up the doors to your place. I know the clean up and reorganizing that ensues after everyone leaves. Thank you so so much. The event turned out great! The venue was first class, the people were awesome. The food, I hear the BBQ was good , the desserts, the wine tasting and , the kart racing, the winners grudge match, the drive through the beautiful northern San Diego county, the weld tech sesh , the alignment sesh, the beautiful cars, the ummmmm 911's, the weather. IT WAS AWESOME!! Lets do it again next year.

Oscar and Elvira, thank you so much for hosting the event, very generous. It was great to meet you in person. Thank you again for the little white hood you gave me and to many others matching the colors of our cars. What a cool little piece!
Billed as 914 fun day it was the best! What a fantastic fun day! I have been around Porsche's since the 80's and attended many events along the way but this was by far THE best ever!!!! Thanks too to all who planned and executed because the day was just so well organized and laid back. Food was fantastic! And the setting just beautiful. We got to meet so many nice people, what a great bunch. I say "we" because my wife also had a great time as well and enjoyed talking with others the wine tasting.
I was able to meet and look at Larry and Forrest's cars and learned so much from them which will help me with my 6 conversion completion. I appreciate they both took the time to show me things I had not even considered yet! Then I got an education from Keith914 on Webers with so much info about them I could not even remember it all. Great guy and very generous with his personal experience and tips on Webers. PM will be going to him soon.
My only regret is I was so busy talking I did not take any pictures and am so happy to see socalandy posted some. Thanks.
Others have said it and I certainly hope that there will be another 914 Fun day next year. May car will finished for next time. Jim

And kids also enjoyed painting the small wood car and one of my daughter painted it same color with our previous 75 1.8 and even painted with 914 number as an emblem. Also kids and adult enjoyed the giant 914 jenga table game.

thank you Oscar and family I was very late but it was worth it. very nice party and great location. I have lived in Temecula for over 40 yrs and didn,t know such a wonderful place that you have is here in our great city. thank you for thr gifts.

We just got home.
We got a hotel room in Old Town Temecula since we didn't want to drive home on the 15 after wine tasting. Really nice place with yet another wine tasting session there after the get together.
Car ran like crap on the way down. Story be told after talking to Leemon for a couple of minutes I popped the hood right before we left a see what it might be. He suggested electrical.
Ended up being the friggen CHT connector. It was loose. Car ran like a champ back home with no problems.
We left Temecula about 3 PM and took the 79 to the 210 back home.... beautiful drive. There are a lot of cool rural roads wide open, perfect for a 914.
At some future point it seems like a great spot for the San Diego Folks and OC Folks and even for me from E LA County without driving 500 mi's. being that I am still working make it tough without takng 2 or 3 days off.
Anyway....cannot say enough or send enough thanks to Elvira and Oscar.

Thank you all who attended. I am speechless as to how our event turned out. This was truly a team effort. Eddy, Rudy. Kent, Rob and Ethan...you guys rock. A shout out also to set up and clean up crew members, Jeffery, his son Jordan and my buddy Jerry. Can't forget others who brought unexpected goodies.
Quite simply, months of planning, days of preparation, hours of fun and a lifetime of memories....can't be better.

Thank you again to Oscar, Elvira, Rudy & Eddy and family for putting this together. Everything was perfect and made for a great day. We enjoyed meeting so many of you from the 914 World community and can't wait to do it again.
The drive up Palomar Mountain was super awesome too. Next time, I think we'll hook up the GoPro as well.
Next up is the Super Car Sunday in three weeks and I will give that thread a bump and hopefully we will see everyone in Woodland Hills for some more fun and great driving.

Forgot to mention this. There were 27-31 914's (I lost count) in attendance and no one, let me repeat, no one broke down. That might be a first.

True, but I burnt at minimum a 1/2 quart of Castrol 20W 50 over the weekend. Also had the hot start issue rear it's ugly head upon arrival in Temecula Friday night. Other than that, all good.
That was the last hurrah for my car in its present condition. Too bad as it's so much fun in the twisties
