Activated charcoal is used in filters for aquariums, you can get it at a pet store. Generally it is packed into a filter bag, but it is not expensive by any means. That said, I have no idea what form it takes in the 914 can, pellets or whatever.

Did some searching on this a few months ago and was led to

Here are two good threads on the subject:

I didn't care for the look of the pipe bung suggested in the Samba article, so opted for http://www.ebay.com/itm/10x-Black-Plastic-Blanking-End-Caps-Cap-Insert-Plugs-Bung-For-Round-Pipe-Tube-HF-/381641811848?var=&hash=item0 for a more finished look.

The project is still on my to-do list but I have all the materials to refresh the canister when I get to it.

I bought some from ebay to repack my charcoal canister. Worked well!

Here is what I used. Worked great.

In researching which activated charcoal (carbon) to use for recharging the canister in my 911, I discovered that there are countless products which are termed "activated carbon". It turns out that each has been designed and manufactured for a very specific and intended purpose - whether it be water filtration, fuel emissions, or filtering any number of harmful vapours. Accordingly, each product has its own specific base material (coal, wood, coconut), porosity, shape, and manufacturing processes, etc. The science behind this is overwhelming... and my head was left spinning!

In the end, and to be sure I got the right stuff, I decided to salvage material from a new canister designed for gasoline vapour emissions... this is similar to what I got:

Hope that helps.

Bought this item:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Dansk-Vapor-Canister-1H0-201-801-C-/391849547919?hash=item5b3c0d988f:g:ynkAAOSwuaFZecuc&vxp=mtr

20 bucks. Sawed it open, used a screwdriver to pop open the old charcoal canister, poured the good stuff on in. Was even able to use the spring in the Dansk canister to replace the rusted out original in the teener's can.
