914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Show me some aftermarket exterior mirrors

Posted by: Porsche Rescue May 18 2005, 09:57 AM

About to start work to prepare my AX car for paint. Hate the mirrors I have (see below) but don't want to use stock mirrors. Looking for something a little more streamlined as well as inexpensive. I would do without except I will often drive the car to events. Need to decide before paint so I know what existing holes to fill. Any suggestions, pics?

Oops, sorry, pic a bit large. Need to reset the camera!

Posted by: Rough_Rider May 18 2005, 10:13 AM

Sorry i don't have a pic with these mounted, but they do look cool & you can even see whats behind you with em biggrin.gif Which i guess is the point....

Instead of drilling holes in the body i replaced the door 3/4 windows with lexan. Drilled some holes in that, job done.

You can get the mirrors from ebay for $50, leaxn from home despot for $20-30.

your mirrors look like either flags or vilatonis... I had Vilatonis, and I think they look like shitty FLAPS mirrors... I got stock mirrors from ebay for about $50 each...

also, someone here modified miata mirrors, and that was a cool look too...

Posted by: skline May 18 2005, 10:22 AM

I prefer the flag mirrors from a 911. I also like the Vitaloni mirrors when they are painted to match the car. Here is a picture of the 911 flag mirrors installed on the Chalon.

Another one of my Mickey Mouse fixes. Removing the stock mirrors before painting, the screw holes had become elongated, leaked, and some pretty good rust was forming there and inside doors. After cleaning and painting, I couldn't bring myself to drill holes in the doors again. So off to Do It center, bought 1/16" aluminum strip. Cut to fit quarter window, drill a coupe of holes in it for mirrror screws, and silicone to glass.

Any suggestions, pics?

i've got them "tornado"s, just like on your car and i like the looks of them!

TIP 1: when mounting them, turn the base 180 deg. (flip it around), that way they don't stick up in the air like "Z"s bunny ears!

TIP 2: if they seem a bit loose on the ball-socket (mirror moves at higher speeds), take the base off and use a screwdriver and small hammer to "chissel" some groves into the ball. the raised aluminum around the edges will give you a much better grip when re-assembled!

Check out my 914 with BMW M3 style mirrors. I used lexan quarter windows, cause everyone told me you cant drill tempered glass.

I'm glad Bee Jay posted. Remembered this from an earlier post and it looks outstanding. This is exactly what I'm going to do. Nice job!!

AX cars don't need mirrors.

the view behind is distracting, and you don't need the weight or the increased wind resistance.

i like the stock mirror for a dual-purpose car - you can fold the blade flat so it's parallel with the direction of travel and neither distracting nor resistive.

if you want to be racy - get the "935 aero" mirrors from Getty that are basically just fancy housings for the good ol' Sebring mirror. i still like the Sebring mirror, even though i'll probably keep the 'flag' style since it's more "period correct" for a Carrera RS...

Scott beat me to it with the pictures but I was gonna say that the 911 mirrors he put on the chalon look great and I'll be looking for a pair like that myself.
Cheers, Elliot

Here's mine. They suck for visibility...

Why is that? The bar in the way? If they were mounted as far back as possible would visibility be ok?

Seems to be the bar in the way and that they are a little too close in. I'll end up changing them when I do the body and paint.

they're not technically 'aftermarket' but the 993
mirrors that Dave from GPR has on his 914-6 sure look good to me!

Thanks for all the good ideas. Some of you forgot I said "inexpensive". 993 mirrors look the best but not in the budget. I also mentioned I would do without if I didn't need to drive the car to AX/track. Prefer side mirrors for freeway driving.

Posted by: scotty b May 18 2005, 05:49 PM

Sorry no pic but I have put mid-late 80's Ford Escort mirrors on several and they look really good. They also have a cable for adjustment instead of a motor and you can get them for about $10.00 each!! Paint body color and roll on. I'm ure there are several on here that have a pic.

Posted by: Brent May 18 2005, 05:52 PM

I kinda like the Talbot mirrors. Plus they have a Porsche heritage.

Greg, I think those are the ones in xsboost90's progress thread. Don't think he has them on the car yet. Vitiloni Californian I think. Those look like my first choice unless I can find something even less costly. Found a source on the net at $80 each (85 if convex). Then found them on Ebay at $110 pair including shipping. Search Vitiloni mirror.

Rough Rider,

If you can find / take a pic of yours with those mirrors I would love to see it...I have been wanting to put those mirrors on my car for a while.

Thanks,

Tony

Have them, cost about $30 each at FLAPS. I however want to go back to chrome.

Brent, why did you go back? Was it because they didn't work well or because you preferred stock? I may track my car on occasion and I want mirrors that let me see the traffic.

Thanks Greg, now we're getting closer to my price range.

Posted by: Brent May 18 2005, 07:42 PM

Jim,
I don't know if you can see, but I have them mounted at angle to provide better view. The changed angle still does not give me the view I want. Just my taste thought. Plus I've been going down the restoration path and want to restore instead of customize.

I'm with skline....911 flag mirrors are the best!....get them cheap on ebay...that is where I got mine...2 mirrors, 70 bucks..fully electric.

I have the same mirrors as Brent. I don't like them because they don't provide a good enough view of what is behind me. Unfortantely, holes have been drilled for them so I need to get some body work done before I can go back to stock.

Mazda Miata Mirrors would also be a good fit... from the look of them

Jim I have the same mirrors as Brent on the 2.2 Flared car at CAMP 914. I may wish to change to somethin gdifferent.

yup those are the ones i have, couldnt find the link. I shaved the brakets down on mine so the mirror would sit level instead of pointing upwards 45degrees though.

I went through all 9 pages of your update. Did I miss the shaving somewhere?

Man I love that car - I hope my re-do on the white car comes out that good - perfect color/everything. Kudos.

Sorry - didn't mean to hi-jack. for the record, I like the stock mirrors.....

I agree. Those tires and wheels really fill out those flares!

I put two little cheap mirrors on my car. I think they look great (don't work too good, but who cares, they look good). I have a wink mirror on the inside. They were $10-15 each and took a lot of work. I think you can still buy them from various sources. I fabricated the mounts and glued them to the quarter windows. I can not remember the name but think that the name started with a "V"

those are the evergreen 'Sebring" mirrors.
i'd just put 'em on my wing windows too, except - it's a 911, and the wing windows are useful :-)

Vitailoni makes them now - as with the Turbo, the California, The Turbo, the Baby Turbo... (i still have a set of those, haven't seen any in the wild for a while...)
