914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Boxster calipers. Question for those that have done the swap

Posted by: twistedstang Aug 18 2017, 05:00 PM

So, for those of you that have done the boxster caliper swap and have some miles on your car, how do you like the swap?

Also, have you done the fronts only, or front and rear? What master cylinder are you using?

I'm just looking for some real world feedback from the cars that made it off the jackstands.

Posted by: Andyrew Aug 18 2017, 05:26 PM

Thats a lot of caliper for a 914. Note that it needs to be balanced front to back or else you'll find yourself just locking up the fronts.

What wheels are you going to be running?

What kind of power are you going to be making and how are you going to be driving the car?

Posted by: mepstein Aug 18 2017, 05:32 PM

We do it a lot on the 911 builds with 3.2 or 3.6 swaps. Especially if it's going to be tracked. We usually do SC or Carrera calipers on the back.

I'm running them front and rear courtesy of Rich Johnson. I love them. Awesome braking and quiet. It's been about 5 years now. I don't track it, so I am on the same set of pads. I am running a "T", no proportioning valve. I have autocrossed it a couple of times and slammed on the brakes several times on the street and in an autocross and I have never had the rears lock up first. I am also running a 911 emergency brake, since it's mainly a street car.
Im also running a 19mm master cylinder. Works fine

Tony (Cracker) has them on his car and has said how well they work.
I have them, but won't know how I like them until I get the project on the road.
FWIW, I want with Rich Johnson on my set up, too.

Liking it so far - but early days for me, only a few hundred miles on the car. I intend to track the car occasionally (track days, not wheel to wheel) once the engine has seen some more road miles. Brake feel is good now the pads are bedded in. Definitely need to address the M/C and rears to get a decent balance.

my set up is:

front: Boxster calipers, vented disks
rear: '88 Carrera ATE calipers + vented disks
e-brake: Tangerine racing cable adapters (uses 914 standard cables), '88 Carrera internals
M/C: 19mm
Prop valve: Wilwood

The vented rear disks are probably overkill but the GT's used them - so they look "period correct". I also like the fact you can run 15" rims without clearance issues ;-)

I have fronts and rears bought from Rich Johnston for my V8 car. 911 E brakes set up by Eric at PMB with 930 stub axles.
I am going to be running 2 master cylinders and I have no idea how great they will be as my car is a bit off.

I would say it is a great upgrade no matter how you use your car. I run 997 911 front calipers with base Boxster rear - they work great! My system has two brake masters at 5/8 inch each and a proportioning valve plus a balance bar. Install them and never look back...

Would be overkill on a stock powered 4 unless you want the bling.

I went from Alloy S calliper to early boxster on the front. Have SC on the rear and a 19mm MC.

Brakes have plenty of feel and never fade no matter how hard I use/abuse them.

An excellent upgrade.

Thanks for the reply's guys. It just seems there was more negativity towards the swap than positive.

Posted by: Cracker Aug 19 2017, 02:37 PM

Not that it matters to me what calipers you install but are we reading the same thread responses? I didn't see one negative response but plenty of "praises" - who's drinking the kool-aid on this one?

Mine might have been taken as negative. Which is to the contrary, I think they are a great upgrade. My only concern was that if the car is otherwise a stock car going to be driven on the street only then they might be a waste. Also I have doubts they would fit under stock wheels.

I've been told by many people that they fit under stock 15" wheels.
I'm not a fan of adaptors but I might try a set on my Suby build.
We use the Stompski adaptors on our cars. Stephen stops by the shop once a month to drop off cool stuff.

I have only used the Rebel Racing adapters (I am not a fan of adapters either). I have put mine through the ultimate test and thus far, so good. Just poor communication which is well documented.

I have a early 911 front end setup with 2.5" M calipers. Does anyone sell a adapter bracket for this?

Test fitting the rears - already have the fronts dialed in. Still using the pressure limiting valve with a 19 mm master. Things should be interesting...

Was thinking the same on this but thought oh well best not to go there.

Early non S Boxster callipers are the only ones that clear a 15in 911 Fuchs as I recall but could be wrong.

Sorry, I was referring to other sources, not this thread. Im gathering parts to do a 5 lug swap and already have a set of boxster front calipers. I'm definitely doing the full swap on my car. I just wanted to hear from guys that have them and like them. This thread reaffirmed it for me. Thanks.

Absolutely love your car BTW.

Yeah, just went back and reread my last post.... Not what I meant. I read some negative stuff before posting this thread. Mostly from People that haven't ran the brakes. That's why I wanted to hear from those that have. And yes, this thread was full of positive experiences. Thanks again and sorry for my confusing post.

LOL - Got it. Do the upgrade...for the money, it is the best you can do! The Boxster Cup racers are using the same calipers and rotors plus have roughly 500-700 lbs on a full interior 914. I had a G Class PCA racer - phenomenal car (one I should have kept!) and it was mind blowing how good the brakes were (granted, ABS + Power make a world of difference) were. Good luck and reach out to me if you every need any help - I probably won't know the answer but I know who will!

Is this a trick question? I could be wrong but they shouldn't need an adapter - they should bolt right up. I ran a set a decade ago (at least by memory)...plug and play.

Timmothy - you have 3" struts if they fit M calipers. I thought the adaptors were for 3 1/2" struts. I'll check. If so, I got you covered.

Posted by: Cracker Aug 20 2017, 06:54 AM

DUH! Stupid me...that is correct. I was equated his 2.5" mounts to 3" - needed another cup of coffee this morning! blink.gif

I did a front and rear boxter caliper conversion a few years ago. I used some early 911 struts with 3" spacing. I made my own mounts and had to do some machining on the struts to make them work and the thread is somewhere on here. I love the brakes as they are very powerful. I ran a 19mm master cylinder at first but put on a 23mm later. I tend to like the feel with the 19 better as it takes less effort on the foot but has more pedal travel. My rims are 15" deep 6s with hearts and the fit and I left the stock valve on for the rears.

You are correct Mark, I just measured them and they do read 3"
