Progress on my 2.2T build for my 914 has slowed a bit due to funding. So I was able to take that effort and begin a project that I've wanted to do for months.
I'm 3D modeling the whole engine. Model work is done using Creo, the images rendered using Keyshot. Started on a few of the easier parts, well maybe not the easiest, but together they make up a large chunk of the engine and a big push of progress at the beginning helps the project move along.
I'm modeling these from actual parts, on my dining room table. Which is another reason I started with these particular parts, they're already cleaned.
Anyway, here's the first shot. More progress later in the week because I'll have a bit of time, but this is an open ended project. It gets work when I can.
I would have to talk to the guys at work but probably could have the students machine them in class for free if you wanted Glen? At least you would have a hard sample. We have 35 brand new cncs at work..
An accurate model would be amazing to see and build! Would 3D printing (or Ben's suggestion of CNC machining) be reasonable possibilities?
I love these folk's talents!
Nice work. I have modeled in 3D myself (although it was a few years ago) so I can appreciate the work you have put into it. I also have a 2.2 motor that going into my 914.
Have you posted pictures of your build on another thread?
I've been modeling with the plan of 3d printing, unfortunately these models wouldn't fare too well being machined, even at 1:1 scale, less so at the smaller scales I was planning.
I do have my build being documented here
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=311714&hl=slippery++slope
Count me in for one of your posters.
Maybe some cool T shirts as well?
Impressive work there!
Thanks for the interest!
https://flatsixfanatics.com/products/porsche-911-engine-1-4-scale-model-kit
Not the same but looks like a fun toy.
This is very cool. That's the same engine I have in my M471 tribute car; would definitely be up for a poster / T shirt
Little progress today, continuing with the easier stuff. I also started the cam carrier for cylinders 1/2/3 but that's in it's infancy so no pics.
That is really cool.
Thanks guys, finally got a lot more done on the cam housings, lots of features... These aren't 100% nearly impossible to get that with all of the internal stuff, but it's a representation anyway.
More to go.
I'm lov'in this!
Keep em coming.
Cheers- Harry
These would all.make great posters (I'll take a half dozen right now) or T shirts.
Glen,
Really nice work! And thanks for the 914 blueprint, its almost too nice for the garage.
Jule
I love this stuff and this technology.
Had an interesting experience yesterday. Went to the dentist for a crown. Now they have a tiny little 3D camera 'wand' that they 'wave around' over the remaining part of the tooth, and over the opposing tooth, and it produces a rotatable 3D image of both that can very easily be edited 'just so' and then the press 'print' and the milling machine next door starts to mill a ceramic block. 20 minutes later there is the perfect crown to be glued in. The 3D images are all in perfect crisp clear accurate colour too.
Now just imagine - waving that all over a piece of engine alloy and pressing print in a (much larger) milling machine.
Or maybe that us done already and I don't know about it.
Dave
Update with valve covers and hardware.
More progress, a long way to go though.
Had an open evening, so more progress.
You'll notice that in a lot of these the color/finish of the individual parts isn't exact. Each time I add to the model I make a new render file, and then I reassign colors to each part all over again. Because of this, I don't spend a ton of time honing the colors down. Once it's complete I'll get everything so that they look right but for now it's just WIP eye candy.
These are so cool to look at!
Another part added.
small update on the model the engine will be going into...
Oh man, this is my favorite kind of art. Well done!
The two really needed to get together...
Very nice. Makes you wish you can just hit print (on giant imaginary metal printing 3d printer) - come back in a few hours and a nice new car and motor will be ready to go.
This is way to cool. Thanks for sharing your art with us. I love al art and find your work just as enjoyable is fine art. Maybe even more. Now there are people that do not get it but yo, let them eat cake.
Bob B
I'm never posting my models again, you have raised the bar too high!
For someone who used to 3D model for a living, I salute you Sir!!
Wow, neat.
-Steve
Insane skills Glen!
Can you animate the engine?
I've been playing around with some design concepts on the 914. Functionally, I know it's all wrong, either not needed or pulls air in the wrong direction. That's ok, it's a concept, I'm not an aero expert nor do I claim to be. This is to just get conversations started, and to get this idea on paper instead of it stuck in my brain.
Ok, just had to get my defense out before the attacks. It's not something for the purists.
On top of the GT-esq flares I added fender vents similar to the 991 RS's. Then I made a roof spoiler for it, I've been toying with this idea since I bought my 914. The design idea anyway, I didn't want to actually build one until I finished this rendering. Finally I added some side vents, might actually replace some of the air that the spoiler is sucking out of the bay, probably not enough though.
Regardless, hope you guys like it. If not, that's ok.
More progress today!
NICE !
This is way cool! I used somebody’s sketchup rendering to explore color ideas and simple add ons/deletions... yours takes it to a whole new level! Very nice, please keep sharing!
Very impressive. I salute your mad skills. Especially like your side intake prototype. Have always thought that Porsche should have placed a side intakes in the B pillar/targa roll bar to help channel air to the engine grill. Look forward to your next rendering.
Thanks guys! Here's a rendering with a realistic background. The added design features definitely get a mixed reaction, that's kind of the point. Gotta push the boundaries a bit sometimes.
And another of the current status of the engine.
Here's a quick edit you guys might like. I don't have the valves/springs/retainers etc in there yet, but the ports are there.
link to a high res if anyone wants a new desktop background
http://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4456/24116722878_fc87775dc3_o.jpg
Great work!
Looks great..
I've been toying with adding vents to my car and really like your design.
Would you be willing to share the measurements or some close up, detail views?
Either way, great stuff!
Keep it coming.
A few additions. Worked on getting the components done for the head assembly.
Then moved onto the intakes.
Added some more detail to the engine lid
OMG! When you get this done, I hope you can sell some prints. I would love to frame of those for my garage or office. Beautiful work.
I messed around with the 914 model some more, added a GT bumper up front, some different fogs, and played with the sail trim without the vinyl. I kinda dig the look when paired with a metallic color. Oh, and some talbot style mirrors.
Added the fan pulley, and got a start on the carbs. LOTs of features still to add for the carbs.
To me, you could put together a nice little soft cover book with all these drawings in it. I'd buy it. Very cool.
Or get together with someone making a DIY repair manual...you supply the drawings/diagrams.
Other color ways, and flipped the lid up.
And an almost all black engine...
Did some more design work on my outlaw model, certainly not for everyone but it's been fun making a hotrod.
No plans to make any of this, since most of it would be useless in the real world. But it's been fun seeing where the boundaries are from a design standpoint, stepped over a few times and reined it back a little, still pushing strong at that boundary though so if you're a purist, or pretend to be one, you're assuredly going to dislike it. Even if you're not a purist, these design elements have proven to not be everyone's taste.
That's ok.
Now that that's out of the way, lets get into it!
Up front, I created a new turn signal lens and bucket incorporating a new vent to funnel air to the front brakes. Fender vents are unchanged.
Changed the lugs to studs, and added some Michelin branding (not a sponsor) as well.
Out back I started playing around with a modern tail light assembly. These also incorporate small side vents and also use some lighting techniques seen on modern cars.
The roof spoiler remains unchanged, but I added a second purpose of supporting the front wheel of a bicycle! Haha.
The rear part of the rack is just roughed in currently, but you get the idea.
Then I played around with a few colors.
Those rear quarter air intakes would be perfect for doing a Boxster engine conversion.
Added some more design features, this one is definitely on the wild side.
One could sell a few of those front lower valence/spoilers.
Looks incredible.
Front turn signal lens look great as well.
I love the roof spoiler idea if it was done right. It could actually bolt up underneath the targa bar into the six ski rack holes.
Maybe there is room in the 2018 914 calendar for a few of these?
Glen,
Check your PM's.
Cheers,
Scott
I got some time to start hashing out the Zenith carbs, one side of the carburetor coming along nicely, the other side not started yet.
Are you using hand tools to measure or a scanner? Great work as usual.
Some narrow body versions, new steel wheels but they're not quite done yet. I need to adjust the sizing and offset I think.
Added wide steelies, and some motion squiggles. With the squiggles I wanted to have a driver of some sort, so I snagged a bust online and tossed it in.
More on the carbs, been really cool to get up close and personal with all of the stuff that you usually just clean and assemble.
I don't have modeled screw threads on most of the stuff that uses threads, mostly because it takes so much more time to create/export/render. Once the model is done I'll be going back and adding the threads as a bump map on the surfaces that need it. For now you get smooth cylinders going into smooth cylinders.
I realize that by now a lot of the purists don't even look at this thread anymore so they don't get to see the stuff I do for the engine. So for the rest of you, enjoy!!
Well I love your work!
Looks great to me as well..
Awesome carb render!!
Looks great Glen! Cool designs and thinking
Jule
Thank you!!!
More work on the carbs, floats are in as well as the lower portion of the airbox. Still some details to add to the airbox
From above as clay.
and from the side as clay
I was able to find a basic model online for the trans. This is more of a place holder until I can make my own since this is supposed to be a 930 trans.
Looking cool.. Looks like allot of time to draw to this point..
I wonder if you might be able to improve my oil tank drawings if I sent you one?
I like the screw slot orientation being the same.
Had a bit more time this evening so I started on some other bits.
Can you imagine how slow this tow rig would be? hahaha I made the trailer myself, the VW is just a download, kinda low quality.
You have MAD SKILLS my friend, truly admire your talent and vision.
My current Rally project is based off one of your renderings.
Oscar
Yep - it would be verrrry slow. I towed my '72 914 shell with my VW bus from So Cal to New York back in the day... with a tow-bar.
that picture is neat.. actually doing it, was not.
You make my work look like POOP. Well done sir. Those images are going onto my screen saver at work to get me motivated to work on the car again.
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words.
still a lot of parts to add
way cool. almost enough to motivate me to abandon my real six and build a conversion hot rod! just so i could modify without remorse. thanks
i am sure that this work could earn some bucks for providing graphics to vendors in the porsche world.
The current state of the engine (read: unfinished) along with a wide 914.
That's freaking awesome! You're the man !
Very impressive.
And I think that bus has a 3.6 in it so it shouldn't be a problem!
-Steve
Extremely nice work.
More work on the first case half, I underestimated the amount of work the case alone would need. It's getting there though!
Still obviously a work in progress.
You are making me drool
ONE day I'll have a teen with a SIX...ONE DAY!!!
amazing.
I love your solid modeling renderings. Say, I"m working on designing a garage to house my aircooled stable and was wondering if you could export a plan view of a 914-6 to a 2-d AutoCAD (*.dwg or *.dxf) file for my use in architectural layouts? It's a tight building (existing) and need to make every inch count.
Thanks,
Scott Bartmess
There's a 914 model on GrabCAD.com. It's not very accurate, but I used it when modeling my shop renovation.
Attached image(s)
Some additions since I posted last.
I know it's not 914 related, but thought you guys might enjoy it anyway.
Simply amazing work.
Have you played with animations yet? I made my 1st assembly in Fusion 360 a few nights ago, not a fan of it compared to my old Alibre.
No time for working with animations yet, someday, maybe.
Your work is simply gorgeous.
I had to make a racing version of that early 911.
1965 Monte Carlo rally
Glen, make your own calendar. I’d spring for one.
Love your renderings. That Monte 911 is excellent with motor tucked next to it.
I'd take a few calendars if you ever do them.
Give them out as Christmas gifts to my Porsche friends.
I'd buy a calendar for sure!!!
Thanks guys! Some stuff is in the works, will try to get a calendar available to those who want one.
in the meantime, here's a few rendered views of a 9146GT I've been working on. Not 100% accurate, but each time I change things it gets closer.
Got my new headers modeled and added to the engine.
Some more eye candy.
And a few parts added to the engine.
It's getting more and more complete, but still missing a lot of smaller bits. The next big chunk is finishing the carb linkage.
Some more 914 content.
tried my hand at motion blur. Came out ok I think.
and another livery. This one was used on a 911, but I like it so I made one for the 914-6/GT.
And a shot of the naked model. I've been making some more changes and tweaks to this one, changed the rear flares a bit, the skirts, the front bumper, and a bunch of stuff you cant see.
Crazy skills. The front valance side needs to be parallel to the ground and the rocker covers need to move outward a bit.
I'm not a calendar person but I would like some that I could frame and display.
Thanks for the share Amenson.
Working on some variations for a calendar, going to keep it all 914 and 914-6 related, including some views of the engine I've been working on.
Here's a new one, a bit of an offroad 914. I'll probably be adding a roof rack, spare, antenna etc. But it's a starting point.
The Fuchs models that I have on many of my other renderings are 16" and just looked weird and out of place on the lifted 914 so I swapped in the widened 15" steelies. I think ideally it will have narrow 15" Fuchs but that means remodeling.
Awesome work!! I have been posting some of your renderings on my fuchs GT flare thread. I also try to post links to your thread to give you credit!
Rock on.
More additions to the flat 6 model.
I've been busy!
I was contacted by a really big deal advertising firm out of San Francisco, MTZHF. They have a client they are working with and were interested in some of my work. We discussed the details a bit of what they were looking for and I gave them a bid. This week at some point they are pitching it to their client. Hoping for the best here but it's been a few nights of light sleep and a bunch of hand wringing.
I hadn't signed a NDA yet so officially they couldn't discuss the client, but it doesn't take much searching online to see that Audi is their only automotive client.
So... this is exciting! If it gets approved it'll allow me to knock out my real 6-cyl project, as well as provide some funds for a 10 year anniversary trip for my wife and I.
In the meantime, here's a bunch of stuff I've been working on lately!
Exploded view of the 6-cyl head.
RSR brake caliper and a rotor I slapped together
exploded view of the brake
a new 356 model, this was a purchased model that I had to do some tweaking to, also the wheels are scratch built.
Further work on my 934 model, currently about 80% of the exterior is scratch built along with the wheels and tires.
And finally to bring it all back down to earth. I purchased a LE spoiler for the 914, I was toying with the idea of painting my bumpers black and wanted to see what it would look like.
Hope you get the job, and keep posting your awesome works.
Thank you !
There's people with talent and then there is you. You passed them up long ago.
All of your work is beautiful.
Nobody has captured our cars as accurately and emotionally as you have.
Good luck dude!
for those following along, the client loved my work but didn't think it was a good fit for the particular model they were working on. They think it might work with a different model, so maybe some time in the future this'll work out.
Until then, it's more of the same...
just kidding. I made a boat
I've always loved old wooden boats. Never owned one yet but I got as far as getting plans and putting together a build list. I reconsidered, not enough garage space, but that doesn't stop me from building a virtual version. The plans for this are available online, it's called a Riviera. I deviated from the plans a little by lengthening it, angling the transom forward, and tweaking some of the curvature. Design cues from many old wooden runabouts but most notably Chris Craft.
And I know it's not 914 related, but I dropped my LWB early 911 model into a new environment I created. backdrop is of course a photo, but the ground and textures are all done in the rendering software.
I'll be doing a 914 in this setting for the calendar, any requests on slab-side or GT?
I have a Chris Craft you can have.... just pay shipping and maybe trade for a few 3D files for me to print and or CNC mill something... persona use and I'll make sure you get one.
Trying again for a rendering in a scene and trying to make it look real. I've tried before and have had varying amounts of success, never really happy with it.
My goal is that the only way people know it's a rendered image is because the panel gaps are too good, haha. I fooled a few people on FB but it's better than the previous attempt at least.
Car may not be everyones taste with the modifications and big wheels, but I dig it.
It looks so damn real. Great job.
Fooled me at first. Such amazing work! Keep posting these great images.
I know that you have heard this but your work is, a work of art!
Thanks for sharing with us.
Bob B
unbelievable......
I just can't get over how fantastic this is ... I would say almost better than a photo can show . I love that it is always clean and no lighting issues / reflections and other elements in photos.
Could I commission / pay for a custom rendering ?
Thouroughly enjoying! Keep posting! Where can I learn this craft? Love it.
great rendering, the run over /smashed soda plastic container really adds some realism to the picture.
Thanks guys!
Mire stuff added to the engine model, namely throttle linkage.
Bump for a new part added.
just fantastic
Been awhile! I have certainly been busy, some really fun client work and a bunch of non-914 stuff, so I haven't posted here in awhile. Thought today should be the day to inject some life into this thread.
To answer a few questions I missed:
- I don't generally do client work anymore. I was doing that a lot way back but it got to be too stressful and it turned this hobby of mine into a part time job that didn't pay very well. So I've pared it down to just a few select clients that I have an ongoing relationship with.
-If you're interested in learning and are just beginning, I'd suggest downloading Blender, it's a 3D model/render program, free to use and learn. There are many tutorials online, lots on YouTube alone. It's not actually what I use but for a beginner it's probably the cheapest and easiest way to get your foot in the door. You'll want to build up your computer for the work though.
Progress on my real 914: The 6 build has stalled out while I inject money and time into my 3D model and render stuff. Software is expensive. Otherwise, it's running and driving just fine with the 1911 on Webers.
Now for the meat and potatoes of the post.
From the 1971 Monte Carlo rally, here's the #7 9146/GT
I am aware there are some differences (i.e. wheel finish/color) I just like these layouts more. This isn't meant to be a historical archive submission.
Looks great.
Getting a new 3D printer in the next few weeks, I need to model up some P-car parts to test out when I get it.
Hey all, haven't posted in awhile and I apologize. I've been uber busy with work, 2nd-work, baby, life, and the 914 has been in storage for the winter so out of sight/out of mind.
A few updates, not a lot of new 914 stuff rolling through but I've been meaning to revisit the narrow body model and maybe create some 4-lug Fuchs for it. In the meantime, feast your eyes.
I think my talents have been gradually getting better. The opportunity with 000 Magazine has been so so so much fun and it's made me grow a lot. I'm hoping you guys are subscribers so you can experience these builds as they happen.
The engine model made a little progress, I've got the tins nearly done for the 911 configuration. Mounts next.
My favorite model to work with currently, a nicely detailed Singer 911
And I've made a new Minilite model with a Pirelli P7 Corsa
There are probably hundreds more that I've done, but I don't want to bombard you guys too much with non-914 things. Cheers!
Awesome talent you possess
Hey guys, finally some more 914 stuff worth sharing.
I made a new Fuchs model.
So I put them on a narrow body 914
The color is called Yellow Ochre, not a factory color.
Speechless, awesome work !
How long would it take to get to this level of work from just starting to learn 3D modelling?
Thx for the feed back Glen, may be there is hope. I played with SilidWorks a bit and modelled a brake rotor and some other simple stuff. I tried building a tube airframe but was not successful and kind of gave up. I even thought of taking a night class at a local tech college but can't justify the cost since this is just a hobby thing. May be I'll try the software you mentioned.
Thx Glen, will definitely look up Blender
Outstanding work.
At last, the 2.0 Fuchs are done.
Just noticed something ... missing the rear valance
I can't count how many times I've redone the CAD for my flared 914 model. Each time getting a bit closer. Here's my latest version, fronts are looking pretty good here, rears still need some massaging but it's coming along.
Astounding
That looks so damn real its annoying....
haha, thanks guys.
Had a chance to work on the rear flares some more as well as a few other details.
progress on the Brumos car
No doubt, the best 3D representation og the 914 ever! Devil is in the details .
Only thing not looking 100% realistic is the panel gaps especially around the pop up lights.. they are far to perfect .
Haha, the gaps around the lights was brought up before at one point, I even purposely misaligned the pop-up covers a little to make it more realistic. Maybe I need to misalign them a bit more.
I think its fine. Something for us real life builders to strive for
More updates!
And yes, I don't think the Porsche letters are on the engine lids of the real life counterparts of these cars. It's just my absolute favorite design element of the 914 and I refuse* to show one without them.
*unless it's for a client and they're giving me money, haha.
Awesome as ever.
I'd lose a bunch of money betting that these were real photos.
They're that realistic.
Amazing....
Wow....
Absolutely Amazing.
I started working up a model after the #40 car, coincidentally news of it's new ownership broke the day after I posted this on my Instagram account.
Details on mine aren't right on, wheel size/offsets for one, but I feel like it gets 90% there.
I also revisited my engine model and wrapped up the oil pump as well as a few other components. Still a lot to go if I want it to be complete...
I like the hover-board effect
Requesting a 914 version of the Ferrari Monza SP2
haha, I don't do Ferrari often, here's my last. Hope you guys can pick up on the reference.
I reworked some of the materials on the engine model. Trying to get a worn finish on the case specifically, but also just some texture on other parts to increase realism.
I think it looks pretty cool, but it looks like a scale model. (coincidentally, I bought a 3D printer and am going to print off a 1/4 scale engine)
The crowd I run with in 3D rendering are phenomenal, making things that look 100% real, even to the trained professional eye. I'm still nowhere near that level yet, and part of me doesn't want to pursue it at all.
Just in case anyone is looking for a new desktop background.
extra large version here.

Looking great, sell them on Turbo Squid !
Posting again because the last one got clipped on the previous page.
Just in case anyone is looking for a new desktop background.
extra large version here.
http://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49944287452_655bf9ecd8_4k.jpg
The realism is mind blowing....
You are truly incredible, thank you so much for the inspiration.
Time to get back to my project, makes my Zenith's look really cool.
I also think the trailing roof spoiler/wing has some definite merit. A little extension on the Single Cab VW roofline would also be cool!
Keep the idea's flowing!!!!
Thanks again for sharing!
Vysoc
Glen, I was not sure where to post these for the most viewers, but I finally got these framed. Thanks again for the great artwork!
I will really enjoy them.
Just discovered this thread. Breathtaking!
As usual. Spectacular.
It's been a few years, but I'm still hammering away at it.
I did a set of rendered images for last year's WCR, this view in a number of 914 colors
I'm still working up some custom bits for my own car
The molds for these flares are in my garage, waiting for warmer weather.
And I've also made some headway on developing a 914 3D configurator!! (link in my signature) Currently beta testing, but it's been something I've been working towards for quite some time. No intention of stepping on any toes for the visualizer that's out there.
All my latest https://www.instagram.com/glen.cordle/
A while back I had modeled up the chassis dolly detailed on Pbase.com https://pbase.com/9146gt/the9146gt_project_914_dolly
A few edits on the details, and hardware/wheels downloaded from McMaster.
So I decided to run off a couple of views of it.
I'll need to do some chassis work on my real car eventually, but I think I'll probably go for a rotisserie...
Such ridiculously great work. I could look at it all day.
