914World.com _ 914World Garage _ What can you tell me from VIN and engine number

Posted by: carcus Sep 4 2017, 10:42 PM

1976 2.0L.

Engine is not original, not sure what year it is. Paint code on door is Ivory White if I remember. Am I missing any info or can someone break down the codes more than that?

GA001275 falls within the number range of a 1973 2.0

(GA000001-GA006765)

The Karmann plate is your chassis # and not the Vin.

Thank you very much kind sir. 1973 2.0 engine it is then. I knew it was not a matching numbers engine on my 76.

Can the chassis plate be broke down to year and month of manufacture?

Almost. The VIN will give you the year and the chassis number will give you the day of the year.

However, note that the VIN year doesn't start on the 1st of January. Your '76 chassis was build in '75 and the chassis number will give you that day.

There's a decoder here somewhere, let me look ...

VIN 4762903845

VIN 4762903845

What I get from the decoder is April 1976 build, not having the day or month. I know the last year was 1976 and numbers were very low. Using the vin pictures posted, am I off? I did not see a DDMM in my vin so I take it MYY then build number.

4 month of April, 76 year of vehicle, 2903845 left over numbers I have no idea.

For my engine number posted it is a 73 2.0

Chassis number posted I have no idea.

I want to decode to add to the website history. Thanks all for your help.

Engine miles...unknown, has a time cert on #2 cyl. Not sure if I can have the heads redone with a time cert but looking at keeping the 2.0 in the car and rebuilt.

Added appearance package OEM used center console. Car came with no square late model fog lamps, just blank fillers. Added aftermarket ones but if someone has OEM late model Hella square fogs, let me know.

I know by the driver door panel it is paint code for Ivory White. The paint is poor and I need a full body job, belly pan is rusted but have a new pan to go in. Have full fiberglass front and rear flared fenders...not the little ones, the entire fiberglass body panels. Not sure if I want to cut this low model last year 914 up but has some rust all over.

Your chassis code from the door is 4929040,
The decoder says that this was built on Tuesday of the 49th week of the year, and was the 40th chassis made that day.

If I read it correctly...

Nope. The decoder is for the chassis number. You're trying to decode the VIN.

Here's the breakdown on the VIN:

47 == Model 914-4
6 == 1976 model year
29 == Karmann factory
03845 == Number within the model year

That's all that is contained in the VIN.

No, like i said, your car was build in '75. The Model Year (MY) for '76 started in August of '75. As far as i know, all 4000+ '76 cars were actually build in the second half of '75.
