These knobs.
Looks like the last time I opened the group buy was spring of 2014
Details:
Cost will be $75, which includes shipping in the CONUS. If you live outside the CONUS we will work something out.
I'll probably end up making 20-30 knobs and that may be it for a few years.
Knobs are about 50mm in diameter. They all all 100% hand made, by me, here in York PA.
Here is how it works.
I'm interested in one for a stock shifter.
Great! I want two. One for a rennshifter. One undecided.
I want one! I want one!
Stock shifter.
Glad to see you back at this!
I'm in for two for the Rennshifter (screw in). One for the teener, the other for the SC. Mark
I'm in for one on a standard shifter.
Thanks
In for one stock shifter
I am in for one, (standard) pm sent.
In. Rennshifter 2 (second version)
I would like a rennshifter version as well please.
One Rennshifter please and thank you!
Awesome, been hoping you would make more!
I'll take two, stock shifters.
Excellent!
I have enough interest to go ahead and order materials.
Rockler, here I come.
Zach
Hey Zach - I'm in for one for a stock shifter, please! Sending PM now....
These feel beautiful in hand, and don't get hot- I already have one but it's mainly lighter in color.
I'd like one that looks like your picture for a Rennshifter please.
-Harry
These are so friggin cool.... I almost ordered one, and then I remembered that I already have TWO!
ha ha!
Thank you for the service. Best deal in town.
Cheers!
If my other source falls through I am in. Put me down as a tentative
Love mine Zach. Thanks for making these
Add me to the list!! One for a rennshift (screw in).
up to 18 requests. This is going to be the first run.
Still looking for PMs from a few of you.
If more people want in I'll add you to the wait list. If enough people warrent a second run this fall, I'll make it.
Likewise, if people move out of the first run for some reason, the wait list will move in and take their slot.
Zach
I'd love one for our stock 73.
PM sent
Please add me to the wait list! I am super keen to have one of these on my GT lookalike, which may hopefully come out to play next spring....I will have a standard shifter. I can PM you, but suspect I should wait until run 2 is confirmed...
Thx
SR
For everyone who PMed me, I'll be sending out the payment information tomorrow.
If I can get three more people on the wait list, I'll buy materials for a second run this week.
Have to say, its been a while since I have made these, and I'm looking forward to it.
Zach
I am on the fence on this.. Send me a pm if you need the last one for a second run..
I'm definitely in for 1, possibly 2, both for a rennshift. Add me to the list!!
I plan to be sending PMs out tonight to all members of the first group.
Second group will get made with 1 more commitment.
Zach
Count me in for a tear drop shape for a Rennshifter.
I've gotten payments from about 1/2 of the first run. THANK YOU!
I will be starting turning this weekend, with intentions to ship the first knobs next week.
I still need one more knob to commit the second run.
Zach
saw one of these on some guys car... kinda sweet.
We have enough knobs to make the second run!
Zach
I'll take one for a stock 914 shifter...
Tony
glad you're doing the second run!!
The block glued up really well. It gets cut into blanks tomorrow.
The delrin rod arrived earlier this week that I use for the crush rings.
I should be turning tomorrow if all goes as planned.
Zach
I would like 2... one for a stock shifter and one rennshifter
You probably already intend to (as above) but posting pics of the process is fascinating.
Craftsman at work.
Pictures are brilliant, but I guess being an engineer I would like to know full specs as well so that when the guy who has just had full details of my engine build also asks about that wonderful gear knob....
How about wood species, laminate thickness, glue type, blank size, turning time, polish time, polish, lacquer and anything else that you can think of that does not reveal anything proprietary!
Zach, if it is not too late, I will get in on the second run.
I will take 2: 1 for stock shifter and 1 for a rennshifter.
PM me with payment info.
Thanks!
Lots of spaces for the second run. I need to update the first thread to account fro from new pays, and adding new folks to the second run.
Zach
Thanks for all the work n these beautiful works of art !!
Please send PP info when you get a chance.
Cheers
And now the pic I actually got online to post...
Block has been cut up and the blanks have been roughed out on the bandsaw. Centers are marked and ready to go through the drill press once I have the delrin inserts made.
Zach
I updated the first post. Looks like I am missing payments from 2 of the first run people.
Second Run folks - hang tight. We are 1/2 way through building the second run. I'll be contacting you to forward payment, shipping info as I work through the first run and get closer to starting your run.
Thanks all!
Zach
Waiting on one more component I need before I can start work, the threaded aluminum rod for the Rennshifter knobs. I can start work on the Stockers now, (well, after the kids go to sleep tonight), and hopefully the rod will arrive this week.
Zach
Looking forward to the second run- and the rennshifter mounting!
(drove the '73 today and the black plastic knob just doesn't do it!! I'll channel my inner 917 with the wood knob!)
superfly!
The aluminum threaded rod for the Rennshift knobs showed up at my door yesterday.
All the materials are now in hand.
Zach
I am lucky to have one of these in my cay! A work of art and extremely functional.
Sat on the shelf for a year or so because my wife would not let me install it until the car looked better!
If you can get one of these I would highly recommend it! Not that this a reason to buy it but at car shows numerous people have pointed out how cool the knob was.
First knob came off the lathe yesterday. Still several coats of oil needed to fill the grain. But. Yeah, I'm pleased with it.
Zach
Just an update.
I currently have 5 knobs on the finishing block, and 1 on the lathe waiting for me to have some time in the evening to turn it. I should have all the first run Rennshifter knobs off the lathe and in the finishing block by the weekend.
The press fit knobs take a little longer since I have to machine the delrin inserts. I may get a batch of the inserts made this weekend when the last Rennshifter knob comes of the lathe. Then its boring the arbor for the insert and waiting for epoxy to dry.
Zach
Zach,
I have not received any paypal requests or PM's relating to the knob...was I supposed to do something beyond asking for one in this thread? They look great by the way!
Tony
Hmm? I posted immediately (after his post regarding a second run) on September 21st.
Tony
Must have missed it. I'm adding you now Cracker.
When I have shipped some of the first run of knobs I'll start contacting the second run folks for payment. I try not to collect money too far ahead of when I think I'll have time to do the work.
Zach
Progress on the first run.
All the Rennshift knobs are off the lathe and on the oiling block.
I like this picture because it really shows how the coats of oil build luster. the knobs to the left have more coats, the knobs to the left have less.
I batched all the machining for the inserts. This is, far and away, my least favorite part of making these. It takes a lot of time, its critical, and the work is never seen once the knob is made.
Each one has to be cut to size, trued on the lathe. Machine groves into it. The groves give the epoxy a little more surface area to hold to. Center is bored out. And finally a bell is cut on one end. The bell is really important as it makes install over the crush ring easier.
All the inserts are epoxied in. Now I gotta wait for glue to dry. As humid as it is today, i'm probably done for the day.
Zach
Just got my latest issue of 000- nice article about wood shift knobs!! Good timing as I think he'll be ready for run number 2 pretty soon!!
Glad that I caught up on this thread. Besides seeing the awesome work behind the scenes, I see I needed to follow the next step
I was aimlessly awaiting a PM (without me doing anything)....sometimes I have to read directions twice.
What a really cool process and real craftsmanship.
Thanks!
The first run Rennshift knobs are done. Buffed and waxed. I may buff on another coat of wax before I ship, but they look good now so I thought I'd post up a pic.
I also have 6 of the first run stock knobs off the lathe and in oil. 7th is done being turned but still needs sanding and oiling - so not yet off the lathe. Burning the candle at both ends a bit this week, but with the three day weekend and rainy nights it was time to make hay. Been in the shop every night after I get the kids to bed. I'm hopeful that by the end of the weekend all the first run knobs will be off the lathe. As humid as it is, the oil needs extra curing time before I can polish. Would be nice if this rain and humidity blew out.
Zach
Wow!! Look awesome!! Thanks for doing this!!
That looks awesome Zach!
Talent!
Thanks
Awesome, thanks for the pics and progress updates
Man those look nice. Would love one for my 911 but I just bought an OEM plastic knob
All of the first round knobs are now polished.
Some of them still need the wax buffed on. Shipping for first wave could happen this week.
The first of the second round knobs is also off the lathe and in oil.
I guess I really need to send the PM to the second wave crew and start collecting money.
Zach
If there's still room, please put me on the list for one-regular shifter is what I have.
Thanks
There is room, I'll add you to the list Abe. Welcome aboard.
Zach
I have 6 slots left in Run 2 and then it is filled. Come and fill them. I don't know when I'm going to be making these again. Hopefully not another 3 years, but who knows.
Zach
would this fit on my Boxster?(97-stock shifter)
Awaiting the PM for payment details as well- they look great- can't wait!
Payment PMs have been sent for knobs 19 - 30. Thanks all!
Shipping supplies were bought today for all the first round knobs. Goal is to ship them Friday.
Zach
Great news!
PM replied and payment sent - 1 std, 1 rennshift
Thx!!
Paypal sent for 2 rennshifter knobs.
Thx.
I did not get to mail off the Round 1 knobs Friday. A whole lotta life ended up getting in the way last week and I was unable to get back into my shop to put the final polish on them.
I'm printing up shipping labels today and hope to be able to put them in the mail this week.
Zach
Update:
All the Group 1 and 2 of the Group 2 knobs are packaged up and will be dropped at the post office for mailing at lunch today. Happy Halloween everyone!
I've gotten payment for about 1/2 of the existing group 2 orders. If you have not done so yet, please send in payment.
The remaining Group 2 knobs are all in cut blanks. I won't be working on them tonight due to taking the kids trick or treating. But I do hope to get all the bases turned and epoxied into place tomorrow night.
I've also decided to cut off this iteration of the group buy with my existing orders. perhaps I will reopen one in the spring, but I don't know. It will depend on my time.
Thanks all!
Zach
Got mine yesterday and love it! Went out to install it and realized that I don't have a crush sleave. Double checked the package to make sure I didn't miss it. I guess I thought it would come with the sleeve. No worries - Mark sells them for $8.
Thanks, Zach!
EDIT: Found a crush sleeve that I bought with one of Mark's repro knobs years ago. Had a hard time getting it installed as it is a very tight fit, but it finally went on and looks great!
Got mine too! It looks fantastic! I can’t wait to install it
Thanks Zach
We received ours... my wife called it a work of art!
No pictures, I’m pretty tired after 7 hours of driving. But I got mine and it’s beautiful! Thx Zach!
It makes me feel really good to see people happy with my work.
Thanks all of you.
The Second Run folks - your knobs are in progress. All of the blanks are based - which is to say that the delrin inserts are turned and put into the blanks. All the Rennshift knobs have the aluminum studs epoxied into place.
Zach
Got mine over the weekend and i couldn’t be happier! As mentioned above very well done and yes art, old time real craftsmanship, thank you.
Mine are being made now and hopefully shipped around turkey day- can't wait! As close to a 917 as I'll ever get...
Just an update.
All the Group 2 knobs should get shipped soon after Thanksgiving. Plan is to make the final touches to the knobs after Thanksgiving since I'm off on Friday.
Zach
I wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone that took part in this run of knobs. The past couple years has been rough, and seeing people happy with the stuff I make goes a hell of a long way.
All of the second run knobs shipped yesterday. Some of you may start getting them as early as today.
As much as I like making these things, its always a relief when they are shipped off. They always take longer, start to finish, then I expect them too and they tie up a lot of time around the holidays.
I am considering partnering with one of our vendors in the future for these. That could work out really well for everyone.
Thanks again everyone!
Zach
No Zach. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Mine came today- look great! Can't wait to "install." My son liked them too- probably trying to figure out a way to put one on his GT3...
Thank you Zach for sharing this to the 914 world!
I received mine yesterday. I can't wait to install in my car.
I think I read somewhere that Zach was going to produce these to be sold through one of the vendors. So probably no more group buys? Anyway, Here is mine installed. Thanks again Zach for sharing your skill!

I bought 3 so I’m set for a while.
