Timing belt skipped a tooth or two?

Probably not. Likely some sensor. It'll still run a couple teeth off.

Check your crank position sensor.

Throws all the compression out cause the engine looses correct firing order,my BMW did the same but it had a "limp home" mode had the power of a scooter headbang.gif .
Get the car scanned to isolate the problem otherwise you will be chasing your tail and spending $$$.
My same car (Audi) crapped the MAF sensor ,didn't code correctly so cleaned it,got 2 months and it went stromberg.gif replaced it and sold the car still going with 200KMs on it ...very strong little engines its just the all the sh#t that hangs off them go's wrong sad.gif .
