In the morning it has been cold and cloudy. The sun has been coming out after lunch and getting into the 70's.

They are there to prevent the nuts from comming off.
The vibration at speed can have a tendancy to cause them to unscrew themselves. (ask me how I know)

the springs look better. you don't need a pair of side cutters to take them off. i like the idea, may put some wing nuts on my 40idf's and spring them.
