914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Transmission rebuild clinic, VA 12/30-31

Posted by: Dr Evil Oct 4 2017, 12:15 PM

Happening Dec 30-31.

UPDATE 11/1/17 - Address is
3200 Roxbury Rd
Charles City, VA 23030

Don't stay at the Star Motel! Its close, but nasty.

After talking with some folks, I think it would help to know ball park figures on repair cost as parts will depend on your needs. Usual cost including tuition, new bearings, seal kit, and the usual worn out parts (All used parts - 1st teeth/band/slider, 2nd teeth/band/slider) is about $1450. The maximum cost I could calculate with all parts, the bearings, seal kit, tuition, and a new 1/R slider is $1900.

Also, say your box needs something done, new R/P which I will not have time to replace likely at the clinic, I will take it back with me and do it at the shop and ship it out to you. With shipping, parts, labor this scenario would cost you an additional $550. So, worst case then would be $2450. Not bad for a rebuilt Porsche transmission. However, this scenario has never happened. Food for thought.

If you want to save $100-115 on shipping then feel free to drop off any box you want rebuilt to Scotty's shop and I will retrieve it after the clinic and take it back to the shop and place it in line for rebuild.

Also, contact me if you have cores local or between Columbus, OH and Richmond, VA for sale as I may be interested in picking some up.

UPDATE 10/22/17 - This is happening the weekend of New Years, Sat and Sun. Plan for a long session Sat in particular. Since the list is more finalized I will set up PM with info on bearings and such. I can group buy stuff and save you lots of $$.

Original post:
"So, some of you have kept up with my shit show of a personal life and can understand why I was not doing clinics for a while. Also, I have had to adapt and research to changes in our boxes as what worked 10 yrs ago may not work now; ex would be using old bearings. I have secured a source for new bearings and have verified in many builds that they are robust, and to factory spec, so they can be easily installed. Thus, I am able to once again start offering clinics as my time allows.

I have discussed it with Scotty B and he has graciously offered up his new shop near Richmond, VA as a venue for the clinic. It is within half a days drive for me so it is doable without me missing days from my day job that pays my bills. As soon as I get more time off saved up I will look into doing other clinics around the country, and Canada (yo, Mark!).

So, how does this go? Since there are a lot of new folks on here, click on the links in my sig below to see how we have done these in the past. I am keeping the cost the same ($300/head and 18 and below are free, free to spectate, take pics, etc), but expect to buy new bearing sets off of me. If you insist on using old bearings, I will not warranty that they will last. The more people that we get bearing sets, the cheaper for everyone. Not sure what I will cut off the class size at, I haven't been to Scotty's shop yet to see and will talk more with him as we have done them at his old place in the past and he is savvy.

When? Towards the end of the year is the earliest. Early Dec is looking like a possibility.

Lets see what interest we can generate!

Also, I am always willing to do a clinic here at my shop in OH, 43160. However, I am planning to sell the house/barn and move to the city and I am not sure I will have such a luxurious structure to do such things at in the future. (Divorce is a bitch!).

Guys from LA and NorCal have contacted me privately, they are needing/wanting, and I would love to meet that need as soon as I can. I just need to time off of work.

Washington, Mr242 has lit the fire and you are on my radar.

Canada, I can drive it in a day and Mark has a great place to host (and he just basically kicks ass).

Any others wanna throw their location in as a possible?

Post up here if interested, PM me if very serious and I will assemble a list of parts purchasers so I can see about getting a group discount from my suppliers. Man, I missed doing these smile.gif"

This is welcome news!

For anyone not knowing the value, expertise, and beer drinking abilities of the kind Dr., just do a search.

If need a box, there you go.

Great to see you doing this again! aktion035.gif

Sweet! I just redid a box earlier this year watching each chapter of your video about 100 times to make sure I wasn't screwing something up, but I'd still like to do this in person. Count me as definitely interested.

I’d be interested in attending. I have a 902/1 box to freshen up for the 68 911 I am building. Since it came with the tub when I bought it, I have no clue as to the condition. Where is Scotty’s in Virginia? My oldest son went to Virginia Tech and that was about 12 hours from here in central Vermont.

A little East of Richmond off of I-64. My son's at Tech now and I was just there last weekend for the Clemson game dry.gif ...nowhere near Tech.

So, the far side of Shelton keeps the riff raff out. Gotcha. happy11.gif

Texas is a definite possibility. Its a big state, though, so where?

As for where in VA, I only know where his old shop was in Charles City (IIRC) and his new place is near that. I sent him a message letting him know I opened this can of worms so he can chime in with particulars on that.

Most of the TX members are in San Antonio. Austin, Houston or the DFW area. Austin is the most convenient and central of those being 188 from DFW, 160 from Houston and 78 from San Antonio. I see TY75's in you future Doc. hide.gif

Well a Shelon location is better than what Kevin offered!
I can help by housing Dr. Evil, don't have a shop place other than Shelton. So who's offering a spot in the Seattle area?

Posted by: aharder Oct 4 2017, 03:37 PM

+1 For Texas, yes Dallas would be good but I'll be good for anyplace in Texas !! beerchug.gif

Dude, I would love to do an Austin one and have contacts there (non 914). Always need a place to do it and an agreement on trading service and goods for the rent. biggrin.gif

I am in for a VA one, even better if you used the shop in MD since its even closer for me biggrin.gif

Posted by: cn2800 Oct 4 2017, 05:20 PM

Another 'yes' for one in Texas! My shop is available for use, but I'm up in the panhandle, which wouldn't be much help for the folks down south.

Posted by: rhodyguy Oct 4 2017, 05:39 PM

Just so you know mark, I offered my place if no one else stepped up prior to you and mike deciding upon Shelton. We clear on that one?

Posted by: wndsrfr Oct 4 2017, 06:22 PM

Very interested in the Richmond clinic....likely will have two 901's to get into....

John

Posted by: Mark Henry Oct 4 2017, 07:45 PM

Looking at my schedule a "Dr Evil's Canadian Tranny Clinic" would have to be somewhere mid-Jan at the earliest, but just about any weekend right through the spring should be good to go.
Later in the spring for the any brave enough to camp, but there's hotels and BnB's in the area. Or winter my shop is heated if you have a cot.

As usual the Evil one scams a soft bed in the house. shades.gif

Hey Matty,

I try to go 10-20 people. Less would just cost more, but could be more intimate and we could do some extra stuff maybe. So far, I haven't ever had a problem getting 10 people for my clinics that require flight expense. Id be down for OR at the Rubber Palace.

I attended one several years ago at Mort's place in NY. It was a great time hanging out, wrenching, drinking and eating. An event that shouldn't be missed.

I would stop by just for the company and party if it wasn't so far away.

Spoke with Scotty, he is having his usual crappy luck with phone and computer taking a crap at the same time so he is kind of cut off from the internet at the moment. He says that mid Dec and later works best for him. What say you all? I know Xmas and New Years are in that range, and that can mess things up some. I could do early Dec, or even better for me would be New Years weekend as I get New Years Day off and it is on Monday, and I will already be over at his place as is tradition. Let me know your thoughts!

Posted by: ThreeV8s Oct 17 2017, 06:24 PM

How mechanically inclined does one need to be to come to one of these and do the rebuild? I have no experience of the sort and have never removed/installed a gearbox or major component, so assuming I could find someone to help me through that part of it, this sounds like an amazing opportunity.

You are the perfect candidate for this. You may take more supervision, but you will learn some confidence and gain some mechanical acumen. As long as you have the tools, which I will post up when we get closer and are nothing exotic, you will do just fine. As for remove and install, post up a separate thread and I bet you will find plenty of help.

Posted by: Dr Evil Oct 18 2017, 07:42 AM

Ok, how does New Years weekend sound to everyone? If necessary, I can come out the Friday before, but anticipate that we will work 9a-midnight the first day (possibly end sooner depending on need), and 9a to about noon-1 the second day so you still will have the evening to enjoy a quiet New Years. This is the tentative week at at this point.

Posted by: BeatNavy Oct 18 2017, 08:11 AM

I probably can't make that weekend. I could probably do the next weekend (1/5 - 1/7).

It may be tough any time immediately before, during, or after the holidays, but you gotta pick a date that you think works, especially for you. I'd love to go to this if I can, even if I don't have a tranny in full need of rebuild.

What does everyone else say? The good doctor needs some feedback so he can lock something in...

Nah, no PM or any such. I will update the first post and encourage everyone to check to see that they are either on the list or should not be on the list. As for too list, I will go to one of the old threads linked in my signature and just cut and paste those info. If you havent scrolled through my signature, you should. There is an article in 9Magazine, and links to some old clinics.

I'm very interested.

I will be putting the 914 trans on a 3.2 and know almost nothing about transmission.

Is this the course for me?

Nixed by the wife's holiday travel plans. Count me out. I may ship it to you for the rebuild.

I will need to order the bearing sets in the near future. I figure beginning of Nov/mid Nov latest for collection of those monies. We can stagger parts/tuition collection if necessary. Just need paid up by shop day and will need some funds for other parts that you will likely need; rings, sliders, teeth, etc.

OK, making progress on this and will have the stack out this weekend with pictures up for your review and after reading all of the posts on the old classes in your link it's clear I need to clean them so you can see "hard" edges to better see the wear marks.

I'm ready to pay now so once you help me figure out what parts I need and tell me how to give you money lol-2.gif , we'll be ready

Hello,

I'd be interested, I am in S. NH (An hour north of Boston). My transmission needs 2nd gear synchros, at a minimum. I've owned my 914-6 since 1990, synchros were fine when I got it... ;-)

Timing is good, winter storage so not cutting into driving season. Any possibility of offering it closer? NY maybe? Willing to drive, also noticed someone from Lunenburg going, maybe we can car pool...

UPDATE 10/27/17 - Address is
3200 Roxbury Rd
Charles City, VA 23030

Don't stay at the Star Motel! Its close, but nasty.

Man, I missed doing these :)"

Cool, the only things that are of major importance are the pinion and that gasket chunk. Pinion looks servicable and the gasket piece should be perfect. No need for others to post all this. Pulling off side cover and taking a pic of the pinion is sufficient. The rest can stay together. smile.gif

Another idea, I will place in the first post, is that if you want to save $100-115 on shipping then feel free to drop off any box you want rebuilt to Scotty's shop and I will retrieve it after the clinic and take it back to the shop and place it in line for rebuild. Always looking for ways to save ya'll some $$.

If anyone has cores, please contact me as I am always looking for those, too.

Alright, I am in talks with the bearing distributor to see about a larger order (10 sets plus a few for customers boxes that I am working on). Gonna be a chunk of change. I think I will cap the class off at 10, we seem to maintain at that number any way with some dropping off and others joining up. I have sent PM to everyone on the list, initially, not sure if I contacted everyone on the current updated list so contact me if you haven't directly heard from me. Cant wait for this!

Hi Doc,

Not sure how to start discussion with you on this sight, so please indulge me with the following question:

I was talking to an experienced Porsche transmission mechanic today about I often have difficulty engaging second gear when the car is at a standstill - no other problems with my tranny. He said that the first gear design is different from second gear on up as first is designed to allow easy engagement when the car is stationary, where as the other gears are suited to engagement when the car is moving forward. I told him of the high regard we "914ers" have of you and he suggested I check his opinion on this difference between engaging gears when our cars are stationary. What is your opinion?

Thanks, Keith.

Hey Keith,

I am always available through PM or email for you or anyone, I address stuff like this all the time wink.gif

As to your question, its kind of correct, but not clear. For shifting you need to understand the physics and mechanics behind how the transmission shifts:

You move the stick-->through rods the shift fork is actuated--> slider is pushed against the synchro band which has a rough parkerized coating on it that acts similar to a tire tread, it is intended for friction--> through the slider pushing on the synchro band the selected gear is sped up or slowed down to the speed of the shaft that the slider is attached to--> the slider then slides over the synchro band, locks against the dog teeth, and the band obtains some tension in all of this which enables it to retain the slider onto the teeth.

The above happens with every shift, quickly. Now, as far as some gears being designed to shift when stationary, that's not correct. 1st is different, but that is only because you do not "up shift" into first and thus internal to the dog teeth there is one energizing band rather than two (one for up and down shift). I don't have pics to better explain, but the general concept is all I am trying for at the moment. There was an actual bulletin from Porsche on 901 equipped cars instructing NOT to down shift into 1st as it is not necessary and caused premature failure of first gear parts. There are stickers placed in the books for the cars seen at the dealer/service places after this announcement/change.

As for not being able to shift into 2nd at a stand still, this is telling us a few things. You should be able to shift into any gear at any time, essentially. It will be harder the further apart the gears are in ratio and RPM; like harder to shift into first at 50mph. However, at a standstill you should have no issue hitting all of the gears UNLESS your clutch is dragging. When your clutch is dragging it causes the parts of the synchro package on the gear ( for 2nd would be synchro band, blocks, and energizer bands) to push the synchro band out and that makes sliding the slider on harder and can cause grinding or lack of engagement. If you are not getting grinding, then the synchro band is expanding very far and keeping the teeth of the slider from engaging/hitting the dog teeth.

Now, this assessment is based on my interpretation that you have an issue, that is constant, where you cant select 2nd at a standstill. I didn't see any further symptoms to go on so I went a little broad. Consequently, I often block out 1st completely on larger displacement engines with torque levels high enough to make 1st unnecessary and likely to be broken. These cars have no issue selecting 2nd at a stand still wink.gif

Thanks Doc. As usual I, and I am sure fellow enthusiasts, beerchug.gif really appreciate your insight and expertise to these issues. This has been very helpful and I will discuss this further with my interested mechanic and report back. I will also check my clutch adjustment

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 20 2017, 12:47 PM

Another quick sign your clutch cable is too lose, you grind going into reverse. You should never grind as they are straight cut and there is no syncro goodies to match them. You basically are ramming the 1/R slider into the idler gear when you shift into R and if there is grinding it is because that idler gear, which is driven by the input shaft, is still spinning.

If you haven't paid, changed mind, wife found out and you are on lock down, let me know. Looking forward to this. Gonna be a busy weekend in that I will be driving out on Fri night after work, Scotty and his friends will be at a concert until 1-2am Sat so likely Ill get a hotel. Meet up and hit the ground running by 9am Sat. End whenever on Sat night. Back at it again on Sun about 9-10am, end likely early afternoon, then beer.gif beerchug.gif beer3.gif Sun night, wake up Mon afternoon, hit the road to get home in time for court on Tues the 2nd at 1pm when my divorce becomes final!

Hey Doc,

Not sure it matters but you've got my username wrong in the list.
It's BENBRO02

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 3 2017, 09:56 PM

Ok, went through and updated the list on who paid and for what (my notes) and corrected BENBRO02.

The ones marked unsure mean I am unsure if yall are still going. Let me know. Bearings were ordered, and the box came apart on the way from the manufacturer so it was returned with some of the contents. Waiting for another week for the bearings....meanwhile transmission are backing up on my benches.

I know two are at courtyard by Marriott Richmond airport. I may be booking there. Don't know yet. I will see this weekend what is closest/open. I will likely roll in way late after working a full day. Since Scotty and friends will be at a concert until 1-2am, I figure not worth showing up there. However, if I will be in that late, well....

yea i really was looking forward to doing another transmission, and seeing everyone, hanging out! is the Miata running? my 914 is right now at a shop in Columbia Sc being stripped down for repaint back to original Copper metallic! hoping to have it back on the road by spring- a spare transmission was a luxury i cant afford after having to do a full clutch job on the Boxster thst turned into IMS as well. none of which was in the budget with the body and paint foe the 914- hope to see you all at next year Okteenerfest!

Well a Shelon location is better than what Kevin offered!
I can help by housing Dr. Evil, don't have a shop place other than Shelton. So who's offering a spot in the Seattle area?

I can offer my usually empty condo in downtown Seattle. Not sure that helps. PM me if it's useful, as I might miss a response on this thread.

Update" A bit behind schedule, I have the transaxle out and case washed (Engine degreaser at the local do-it-yourself car wash)

(My 'ace in the hole' if needed is a spare transmission in my mom's barn... But that's a 74 914-4 so different gear ratios... but could steal parts if needed... )

Plan is to get the gear stack out in next day of two for inspection.

Have hotel near airport, carpooling down w LowBridge so lots of 914 talk on trip down!

Doing a remove and install at the clinic is a no go. I will be tasked with 8 people and unless you can get it out and in, and have clearance from Scotty as I don’t know his space situation, but know it’s limited, there is no way to accomplish this.

Thanks for the info about the shiny new hardware! I was wondering about that... Heading out to garage shortly to finish disassembly of intermediate plate.

Is there a 'special tools list' that I should think about packing as I stare at my roller tool box, wondering what I should take?

... like a 'big azz wrench' or special deep socket so we don't have to use an adjustable like A saw in a thread somewhere here... Hangars and parts boxes to keep parts organized? Snap ring pliers?

I just spotted a broken race on the inside of the intermediate plate, maybe the reverse gear, bearings were held in place till I took it apart... I assume this is one of the bearings in the kit?

Sorry I'm behind schedule, hopefully pics coming soon!

Where did you get the idea that you had to do a full tear down? That all happens at the clinic. I hope you saved th gasket so we can measure it. No special tools needed, I bring all of that. Bearings in the kit are both roller bearings and both int plate bearings.

You can look in my signature below for links to last clinics for more clarity. The instructions are the same every time.

Cool. I just need to see the ring and pink on teeth to assure it’s buildaenim current form. If either are junk, you would either need to find another box, or I have to take yours with me as I won’t have time to set it p a r/p at the clinic and likely won’t have my tools. Looks ok in pics.

Hard to say. Plans for the immediate future actually have me closing shop for about 6mo. I need to finish current house so I can sell it, and start/finish garage extension on new house so I have a place to keep all of my stuff. On top of that, I broke my finger right before the clinic and it still aint right. Im like the Frodo of transmission repair....it has slowed me down. Currently I have a 915 side shift conversion I am de bugging, RR on an R/P for wndsrfr, core build to finish and ship to Jim Hoyland, same for jmalone, and finishing up a 912 rebuild this week. I haven't accepted any more work at the moment. However, my plans are to do multiple clinics as able, when able. New job also sucks as I am treated just like any other state employee (no vacation time typical for doctors, just 3 wks sick/vac/yr). Just found out the extent to my Mom's newly diagnosed breast cancer so likely having to burn time up to go to San Diego, too. That may allow for a clinic there if I can find a location to hold it. That would also help me pay for the trip and likely lost hours at work.

So, lots going on wink.gif

Sorry to hear about your mom.

sorry to hear about your mother... I hope the treatment goes well.

ditto on the news.

Open offer to use my new garage space, barn and lot to host a mid Atlantic clinic. Just outside Baltimore, (the good side) Easy access of I70.

There is a good side to Baltimore???!

Thanks for the well wishes. So far, Im not worried, just sucks a bit. Treatment will not be fun. Such is life. Being in the medical field numbs me a bit.

its all relative.

Yikes, lots going on for sure....here's hoping for the best with your mom's treatment....

Circling back, getting ready to re-install my rebuilt transaxle. (Hey - every time I went to the garage this winter it was cold...) ;-)

I have a 'left over' part. (Pic attached) Pea-Nut shaped. calling Dr. Evil... Please tell me it's not too far into it...

Maybe this is what I get for being a wize azz - Dr Evil made it so I have 1 forward gear and 5 reverse?!

I answered your email. Based on what we find, I’ll write it up here. I am thinking this is a spare and there is an easy test.

Posted by: Movin6 Jun 8 2018, 12:42 PM

Thanks! I'm pretty sure it's not a spare, looks like part # 901.303.211.01 "Detent". #20 on attached diagram.

What is the test? (Transaxle is still out of the car.)

Here is the email I sent you.
“20.

If you pull the shift console, then try to see if you can move the 1 and 2nd rods you encounter into a gear. That piece locks in the other rod when you shift. So, shift the first rod fore or aft, then try to shift the other rod. If it will shift, that part is missing. If it won’t, then that was someone’s spare that made it into your parts. ”

OK, thanks. The shift console is still off, but looking in I can only see one bronze shift fork. This is a modified side-shifter. Do I need to take off the bottom plate at the back end?

"shift the first rod fore or aft, then try to shift the other rod (next rod in). If it will shift, that part is missing. If it won’t, then that was someone’s spare that made it into your parts. " Ill bet you $100 that what you have is a spare from one of the parts boxes. The fork you see is on the rod I was talking about. Move the fork/slider fore or aft to lock that in a gear, then try to shift the other rod/fork/slider. If you can even budge the next rod/fork/slider then that piece is missing.

The detent is mine... I can move one fork all the way and still move another. Can I trade the $100 I just 'won' for instructions to put it back in? :-/

At this point, we should talk. I will verify the test with you. You can move the first and third rod, but not any adjacent rod. I’ll get you hooked up.

Wait... Just re-read - about not moving adjacent. Moving the visible fork (The shifter farthest in.) does lock the middle (adjacent) rod. the middle rod only moves only will move aprox half an inch.
Having another cup of coffee and will re-verify in a bit.

You wont owe me $100 wink.gif The reason I'm 99% sure its not your piece is because we verify that very test you are doing during the clinic. You kept all of your parts in good order, too.

So the middle fork (2nd / 3rd) didn't move easily when reaching in with a large screwdriver through the shift console hole, so I mounted the fork, shifted it into 2nd or 3rd (Never can figure out which way is equivalent to moving shifter forward or backwards...)
With it engaged in gear neither of the adjacent shafts could be moved.
So all is good, the good Doctor is correct - someone tossed a spare detent in to my box...
