After ump-teen years my 914 3.0 six conversion runs!
Major milestone, just tripled the value with a turn of the key.
Sounds real healthy, can't beat that /6 sound!
Still lots of electrical gremlins to work through and it looks like my timing light took a crap half way through break-in. Oh well....that's somewhat expected.
Biggest issue is it looks like my alt/reg isn't charging.
But I got to drive around the block.
Who cares about the little things...... it's alive!!!!
I guess there is hope for me yet Mark.
Congrats.
Marc
I can only imagine how it feels to first fire a long term project like that. I felt pretty good firing my car after many years of slumber, but resurrecting a stock car isn’t the same as wrapping up a big conversion like this. Congrats!!
The sound and feel of a big six behind your back is FABULOUS!
CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations!! Know the "feeling very well". Nothing like it. Keep going, "Tiger".
that's great news... congrats!
Congratulations !!
Yes, congratulations, Mark! "Umpteen years?" Ok, good. I'm not behind schedule, then.
Please do post pics when you have a chance.
This is the engine build

Awesome!
Congrats! I hope you are offering rides!
Right on man!
Congratulations!
Nice! I had a similar event earlier this year.
So, Mark, if umpteen is more than 30 years, I will gladly relinquish my self-awarded trophy for the longest completed resto project in the history of the World (although... they are never really done, are they?).
Well done.
Congrats
I am envious as hell - roll on my own start up in early 2018..........
Congratulations.
Had mine running but not driving recently after 18 months of restore work.
Nice! I'm almost there myself...
Cheers!

HUGE DOUBLE DITTO!
Congratulations Mark. That is a milestone day for sure. Hope you enjoyed that first ride and took photos to post so we can all vicariously enjoy it too.
Glad you got er going!!!
Hi Mark,
Congrats on getting the 914 up and running.. I know you only drove it a short time but how did you like the gear ratios behind the 3.0?
Keep up the great work..
We need a shit eating grin smiley
Going to have to pull the alt...no charging. Oh well, good thing I put a big hatch in.
Congrats....so there is hope for me after all It can be done!
So, what does that hot rod 3 liter feel like in a light car. I’ll bet it’s a rocket! Have fun.
Charlie
The fellow that I bought my 6 from had another one. It had a 2.9 (93 X 70.4) with 906 cams, 46 Weber’s, about 300 hp. I got a ride. Oh my Lord!
Well done!
Konrad
Awesome. Just remember, you don't own it, it owns you.
Couldn't have happened to a better teener. Great news. Oh what a feeling! Wait, that doesn't sound German enough.

Just did 20km (12.5 miles), 5th is HA flipped 90mph = 3000rpm
Gearing seems OK, but I'd have to put more miles on before I can really say.
Gearing is A, F, O, X, HA (flipped).

Much like mine. I got an HB and flipped that. Now longer a squirrel whine on the highway - more refined.
Congrats on this project milestone Mark!
Congrats!
Dropped the alt/reg and harness off at the auto electric shop, they said hopefully Friday.
Congrats man! Can't wait to have this feeling myself lol...
Being someone with a lowly 4 that has been in storage for 30 years and dragged across 5 states, I thought getting these engines running was just a perpetual dream like nuclear fusion or the Cubs winning the Series. But then THAT happened and now this. You give me hope sir Congratulation.
Pics from yesterday.
5 inches away from the engine made for a loud ride.

Looks great, and that one big access hole......
I vote you make the access cover out of Lexan!
Congrats and a "Well done, sir!" to you!
Nice car it runs on caffeine
Driving with the access panel on could make earplugs popular
I have my teen up on the hoist right now, not a single leak anywhere.
I was really surprised how easy the big six was to start. I had trepidation that I may have wired my twinplug dizzy wrong and I couldn't static set my timing with the MSD. I gave the key a quick turn to see if the starter worked and it fired! 2nd turn it started right up! A quick timing check and I was right into the break-in running.
So far the full balance /6 is super smooth, totally different animal from a T4.
While waiting on my alt to come back from the rebuilders I'll be chasing the dreaded spongy brake.
Mark ... that is a awful big motor for those small wheels... are you thinking of going bigger...maybe flares?
Congrats!
Well done, am jealous in a good way!
BTW....
JUST in time for the snowfall.......
BUT that will give you a few months to sort out the minor issues, all in time for a Spring run!
Great news. How loud is it in the drivers seat when the firewall is open like that? You can download an app to measure the volume.
My kid recorded video but no sound,
I'll try to do something before I button it up.
