Help Needed:
SWAG for Saturday Banquet raffle. You can ship stuff to my house or just bring it with you.
AWARDS - If someone wants to step up and make/supply awards for Saturday night…great. Otherwise we’ll talk smack about each other’s car and raffle swag
Trailer Parking - those trailering cars from the north may want to leave them in Flagstaff/Williams on the way to Phoenix (Flagstaff to Phoenix is 150 miles of freeway). If this is needed it would be nice to have secure parking available. Anyone in the Flagstaff area have any space/ideas? (maybe the Williams Days Inn has space??).
For those trailering cars from the east/west/south and want to leave them in Phoenix, I can probably accommodate 4 trailers between my house and my daughters’. We live in Scottsdale close to MoveQik, PMS, and the LaQuinta hotel.
T-shirts: PMS is designing a shirt for this event. The plan is to give free shirts to tour attendees and have extra shirts available for sale. More on this as the details are worked out.
Facebook: has an event. I don’t know jack about how to use FB so if you can’t find the event maybe MoveQik can help. Best I can tell the event name is Route 66 Classic - 2018
I’ll update the post as more details come available. Please post questions/suggestions/offers to help here or PM me.

To clarify.....the hotel that is close to PMS is NOT close to my house. The LaQuinta Phoenix-Scottsdale is right down the street from me. I am currently working with my daughter and her friends to run shuttle service that night for those of you that want to enjoy cocktails and get a ride to a near by hotel :-).
The LaQuinta has offered us a great rate of $84.60 for Thursday, April 19th for the BBQ. If we need more than 15 rooms, they will give them to us. Here are the details:
Thank you for choosing La Quinta! We look forward to hosting your group at our Phoenix - Scottsdale location.

GREAT NEWS!!!
I didn't think I could but I am clearing my April schedule and hope to reserve rooms later this week.
Plan is to trailer my 914 to Phoenix. I may need some ideas where I can safely leave my truck and trailer behind during the event.
Perhaps a So Cal group of teeners could head out with me to Phoenix.
Looks like fun....

April 21 & 22 will be the start of National Parks Week. Free to get into Grand Canyon, saves $30 per car.
We will be right there at the doorway in Williams if you don't have any plans for Sunday after breakfast
It's only a 3 hour drive home for me so I have plenty of time to goof off some more.

Shit sticks. La Quinta charged me $94. I'll have to make them work for it.

ROUTE 66
(word & lyrics by bobby troup)
This lyrics are like performed by natalie cole
If you ever plan to motor west,
Travel my way, take the highway that is best.
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.
It winds from chicago to la,
More than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.
Now you go through saint looey
Joplin, missouri,
And oklahoma city is mighty pretty.
You see amarillo,
Gallup, new mexico,
Flagstaff, arizona.
Don't forget winona,
Kingman, barstow, san bernandino.
Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
When you make that california trip
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.
Solo
Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
When you make that california trip
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.

True.
I've never won... I even put a 914 badge on and hauled prizes
NARP has a slipping clutch and at this point the real 914 is easier to fix

Rich - added you to the list in post #1. You might reconsider joining us as 1- you don't have to drive a 914 (there will be other non-914s on the trip) OR 2- there will be empty right seats available (mine is already filled or I'd offer it to you). I love the driving part but the camaraderie is more than worth the price of admission.

Bumpity Bump. Stopped by four-til-four coffee today to see about meeting there before driving to PMS on Friday morning. Great little Porsche-themed coffee shop in Old Town which is on the way from hotel to PMS. They were written up in Pano a year or so ago. http://www.fourtillfour.com. I'll finalize the time once I speak with the owner. PM me your t-shirt size (even if not attending but just want one) and dinner selection if you have not. See post #1 for details. CU in April

Fourtillfour has a good C&C every first Saturday of the month. The Mayo C&C has gotten so big that Nico's at fourtillfour is much nicer. Lots of interesting stuff shows up with majority AC'ed. Have taken the 914 a couple times and occassionally another 914 will show up.
Even ran into Jeff Qwart at the C&C during auction week!!

I have to admit if I fly out I won't miss the 35-40hour drive down

FYI the traffic on I-10 through Phoenix starts to suck around 3PM. If you're arriving around that time it will suck less if you take the 101 north from Glendale (AZ) all the way around PHX to Scottsdale.

Was at Patrick Motorsports today, went over final details on the meet and greet at his shop. Confirmed he will be there as it’s the same dates as the 3 day Calif Speed Festival at Fontana Speedway.
Oh yeah, car back in his shop for chip, dyno testing and maybe a couple more mods...
My plan is to fly into Phoenix, pick my car up and drive to Mikes house.

Actually, all the places I listed are in Cabazon, but that's just the next exit down the road from Banning.

Check in time is usually 2:00 unless prior arrangements are made. Should be about 4.5 hr's en route from Banning/Cabazon area. If we depart around 9;00 from that area + 30 min lunch stop we should roll in ~2:00pm

Might be safer to meet in Palm Springs. There is a In-n-Out on Ramon Dr & the 10. Take the Bob Hope exit continue to Ramon then left 1 block. What's the groups consensus?

Well, here's yet another year I won't be there ... still have too many irons in the fire. Recently got back from AZ late in February and had our annual Mojave Desert camping trip, middle of March. We need to be at function in LB on 4/28, and then run back to AZ again in May to finish up some carpentry repairs & exterior painting. I've been spending way too much time on the road to try sneaking another long trip in between

One week to go, time to get your car off jack stands and ready for Rt 66.
Friday's plan is to stop for lunch at Arrowhead Bar & Grill in Congress, AZ. I called and they can handle our group size. I have not been there but it got good reviews. This also the Shuttle location for the Arizona Hot Shots Memorial. The memorial is 5 miles north of Congress and the parking lot only has 13 spaces so we'll need to take the shuttle. For those that feel inclined to hike up to the memorial trail, bring appropriate footwear and some water. The total hike is 7 miles but it's an out-and-back so you can go as far as you like. More info is https://azstateparks.com/hotshots/explore/trails. Note the "out" part has a fair amount of climbing. Those not wanting to hike can continue the drive along Rt 89A to the hotel in Prescott.
I'm thinking Saturday's lunch stop will be in Old Town Cottonwood but we can adjust as needed; there's plenty of small towns along Saturday's drive.
See you next week.....

Where are those heading east on I-10 from So. Cal meeting up Thursday morning? Based on the discussion back on page 8 of this thread, I thought it was going to be 9:00 at the "In-n-Out on Ramon Dr & the 10." I've made arrangement to stay in Palm Desert Wednesday night. If the group is now going to meet in Cabazon at 8, can you swing by the In-N-Out to pick up those of us who are gathering there? What time?
Really don't want to leave earlier than necessary and backtrack 25 miles.

Does anyone want to meet at the Tustin Cars & Coffee at around 6:30am Thursday morning? There’s no cars & Coffee Thursday morning, but it’s right off of the 55 for us south Orange County Guys heading to 91 East. We could easily make it to Cabazon by 8.

We could swing by, it’s around 25 miles down the 10. Get there around 8:30
Or just skip Cabazon and drive straight to in & out on Ramon.

We'll wait for the arrival of the group at the In-n-Out on Ramon Dr. & the 10 (Bob Hope Dr. exit) @ 8:30.

If we leave Tustin Cars & Coffee at 6:30 or 6:00 (either works for me), it will get us to Cabazon at around 7:30 and then get to In&Out at 8. Leave In&out no later than 8:30. I think everyone will be happy with that. If no one wants to meet in Tustin, I will drive straight to Cabazon. There's a burger king there. I can get a high cholesterol breakfast.

I had a wonderful time. Thanks to Michael, Mike W and Kathy for the excellent Thursday evening. This was the first time I actually checked the gas mileage; 29.91mpg. I'm always impressed by the camaraderie of this group. If you haven't attended one of these events you should take in the next opportunity to do so.
And speaking of opportunities! As we rounded a corner on Saturday afternoons drive I spotted Elliot on the side of the road with his engine lid opened. Being the caring soul that I am I circled back to see what the problem was. I wasn't going to miss this opportunity for all the Tea in China. My chief distractor and Grand Architect of the Porsche Purist's Parade was now aside the road, in need, only to have a Subaru conversion come to his aid. As I rounded the corner I caught a glimpse of Elliot quickly disappearing into the woods. After repeatedly calling his name for several minutes he emerged from the woods. Immediately the excuses began to flow. He insisted that he was NOT broken down and was merely stretching his legs. I then asked what constitutes a broken down car because I sure as Hell thought the engine lid up, on the side of the road as everyone went passed him did indeed constitute a disabled vehicle. I can only say the the next barrage of expletives from Elliot made me feel quite unappreciated. Regardless, after rendering aid, I decided that I would escort him the remaining distance as his car was, once again, proving itself to not be as reliable as the Subaru power plant. To my surprise his car did make it the next 25 miles and we arrived safely in Williams. Being the Good Friend that I am, I suggested he ship the death trap home but alas my efforts failed as he began to curse me once again. Sure enough the last time I saw Elliot he was exiting the I40 about 150 miles east of the I10. He waved my off as if all was well but I'm afraid it was yet another engine problem and that it was just too painful to share with me.

BPH? A trip to the woods? Been there, done that. Then I had the Dr fix it. Opening the lid helps with fuel perking.
Posted by: brant Apr 23 2018, 02:44 PM
Home safe and sound
Zero problems
2239 miles door to door
32.26 MPG over the full trip
Lots of highway tanks were 34/35mpg. But the fun stuff brought the average down
Posted by: forrestkhaag Apr 23 2018, 03:39 PM
Thanks to all for the great time had by all. From the BBQ to the pavement of the highways driven at speed, it was a great trip.
My lack of fourth gear proved a pain to keep up with the five speed folks in the hills at lower speeds so I had to elect to return to SoCal a day early. I have since located another sideshift box (thanks to CoonDog's referrral) and will pick that one up tomorrow and insert it in my car on Wednesday to see if IT has a fourth gear..... and the others.....
Cheers
Sidebar: It is always reassuring to know the confidence and caring nature that our 914-brethren bestow on us along these lonely desert roads.......
like the time three days ago that Larmo, Steve and I took off across the bleak, stark, un-cell served desert north of the 10 to trek at 80+ mph for a hundred miles all the while those two in front of me knowing i was running on empty with a partial gearbox.
Ahh, it warms the cockles of the heart to see them accelerate out of sight in front of me as i nursed my auto across endless roads on a fume-driven 6...... wondering if by some chance another 914 guy was behind me - but it was not to be. Later that day, after mile upon mile of nail biting, I rolled downhill into the only fuel stop in fifty miles and was apparently bone dry in the tank. Larmo, standing there under the canopy coolly, assured me that i had at least a gallon or two remaining in the tank even though the gauge read below empty.
Just to test his theory, i again pressed on - and on the return to Socal sucked the needle to the empty mark. Then,....whuuurrrrrrr pop pop putterzzzzzzz / dead on the side of the freeway in Palm Springs - gasless. A dry stick check indicated that again, i was on fumes and had no real liquid in the tank. AAA Premier had me on the road in 20 minutes.
Moral of the story: Don't always believe the experiences of others has any real application to your own experience - and keep a real gauge (1/4" dowel, 2' long) handy if your gauge hangs up a the lower range of its travel.......
cheers

I know that to Subaru powered cars, an open engine lid usually means something disastrous has happened to their rather unreliable cars, it was only to check my oil level. My car corners with such incredible "G" forces, the engine oil light would come on at the top of the radius of a turn.
I stopped to check the oil level and Kurt was nice enough to lend me 1/2 quart of Mobil 1. ONE HALF OF A QUART. I'm not sure how he was able to part with that much but he said, "It was all I have". Uh huh! The next morning I was able to stay in front of the subi doobi with ease and did so until I pulled off at the old route 66 turn off only to find that it was blocked off.
What good is a Route 66 tour without a tour of Route 66? I spent the night in Barstow and got home a few hours ago. All the route 66 tours that I have been on have been a great tour. This one was no exception. Much thanks to Mike for organizing the tour and Mike and Kathy Wills for their hospitality and food. Just over 1200 miles round trip for me. Looking forward to next year.
Cheers, Elliot

Home safe and sound
Zero problems
2239 miles door to door
32.26 MPG over the full trip
Lots of highway tanks were 34/35mpg. But the fun stuff brought the average down
Brant, I never looked under the bonnet ... what are you running in there to achieve such astounding MPG?
Hopefully I'll have a 914 ready for the 2019 'Route 66 Run' ... they've always been fun events with a great bunch of boys & girls

Sidebar reply: (to Forrest)
We did know you had lost your fourth gear (somehow?) but who drives in the middle of the desert with no gas?
And, when you filled up, it would only hold 11.7 gallons as I recall.
Who built your car?

Apparently he does not know that you lift the nozzle more than half way out of the tank after it clicks off then u can get 2 to 5 more gallons.
Posted by: Steve Apr 23 2018, 10:51 PM
Another side bar... we should of formed some sort of driving etiquette. I was ahead of Larmo and couldn’t see behind his car. In other drives, Keith and I agreed that i would lead and if he flashed his lights I would let him pass and I would follow him to the closest rest stop for gas, etc. Or if he had car trouble, I would quickly slow down and pull over. Except for the rest stops and gas, Keith and i had no issues for the 7 hour drive back home.

I liked the AZ gas pumps, where you could easily do this. In So Cal, you have to hold the big suction do hickey back so you can fill it to the top. My leaky fuel cell only holds 10 gallons, so I need every drop I can get.

Oh i remember those gas pump Handles in SoCal. I would have to hold them up with both hands while trying to keep the pump handle active. Usually ended up getting gas on me every time.

Last weekend was a great time due to the hard work of everyone involved. From the generous meet and greet bbq at Casa de Wills, the tour at PM, the route planning, and of course the gang of crazies making it the friendly and fun time, this was one I really needed. Thanks go to all with extra going to Toast for the hospitality Wednesday night, Ernie for the Subaru parking in Flagstaff, Brant for the cruise and company to and from Flag, and Jamie for the other passenger seat. I got to know more people this time around and looking at the cars never gets old - thanks again for the hard work and the good times!

Its a pretty stock 2.0 Djet.... Jason's old motor. Its pretty loose/worn in, at this point so that may be one contributor. Also the MPS has been adjusted with a wideband sensor, and everything optimized in the DJet system.
I know the speedo is accurate, and has been re-calibrated. But I'm also guessing that the 16inch rims give it a bit higher gearing... which may contribute to the highway mileage numbers also.
(got curious as I was writing... looked it up.. 2%gearing advantage over stock)
good old Porsche design is the most of it. These cars were built for mileage more than performance

THANK YOU
I couldn't have asked for a more enjoyable time this past weekend. BBQ on Thursday was over the top, thank you Mike W. The evening was marvelous, the food superb, and the company fabulous. You have an ideal home set up with you 914 tucked in your beautiful garage. Loved grandmas car too. Those of us attending were fortunate to have such wonderful, thoughtful hosts. Please thank your wife
Michael…I can't sat enough, you D’man for putting this event together. Great planning and execution. Thanks for letting me borrow your driveway for the weekend. Oh, can’t forget Jason who was kind enough to help out on making our awards, so a big shout out to him as well.
I have to apologize for my fellow SoCal friend, Larmo…a bit of a nut…but fun none the less. I can’t change him if his mother didn’t. Kent…love you buddy.
Greg...thumbs up on arranging PMS tour.
I hadn’t participated in a 914 run since 1992…27 years..wow.
Lastly, it was great meeting ALL of you!!! Great memories for sure.
Hope to see you all next year, or sooner!!!
Oscar

That wasn't even his car. I believe that was his wife Diannes' car.

But Mark drove his BB last 2015 Route 66 Palm Spring

Yep, 2015 was the last time the 'BB' attended any events. I took the white one (Dianne's) on the Route-66 Run in 2008 …
I'm slowly but surely making headway on both - 2019 seems like it might be do-able

I second Oscar’s comments! It was an amazing event!! Thank you to both Michaels for your excellent work in putting this event together and graciously providing an amazing barbecue! And to Justin, great job on the awards!
Epilogue...Cathy & I drove to the Mojave Preserve and camped Sunday night. Took an alternate route and ended up driving on about 25 Miles of radically degraded washboarded dirt road. Fortunately, I recognized the symptoms of a disconnected trigger points wire connection and we were able to continue our journey. I realize we won’t get much sympathy, but the A/C fan quit east of Barstow. The rest of the trip was uneventful until the ignition switch failed at our last gas-up. Fortunately, it was only 2 1/2 Miles from home. A couple friends came to our rescue and push started the car. Got 32 Miles per gallon from Bakersfield to Madera!
Does anyone have a source for OEM starter switches? I’ve only been able to locate Chinese aftermarket and they’re junk!!

I bought mine last summer from Sunset Porsche in Oregon. Took about 6 weeks to get it but eventually it showed up. If you have a German switch it can be opened up and cleaned/lubricated. I did that to mine and still have not installed the new OEM switch.

Lebanon (MO) is actually only 81 miles from Cuba (MO) which is also along Route 66!

stevend914,
Wow, I thought Cathy and I drove a long way (1,768 miles). You surpassed us by over 3,000!

Sorry I missed this again but I am closer to making next year. Stopped by Winslow on the way home from Ca just for the photo opp.
You can't see the bug at the end of the block. It's on a trailer behind the big blue box truck.

Has there been any plans for 2019 Route 66?
Posted by: 76-914 Sep 22 2018, 09:35 AM
Not that I'm aware of but it shouldn't be in here in SoCal as WCR 2019 will be here as well.

Finally found myself.
You may have heard @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=1580 and I passed a Google Maps camera car on the way to Phoenix. Finally found the 1 shot of us.
