914World.com _ 914World Garage _ GB shipping to Canada - Combined?

Posted by: Mikey914 Jan 13 2018, 01:25 PM

As you all know shipping to the great white north tends to be a little prohibitive in that shipping really adds up.

I have more than one customer that has asked about it, so thought I'd post a thread.

Looking to see who would be interested in the GBs that I have up to consolidate in one shipment. I'm sure there would be some redistribution costs, but someone would need to be the hub.

We could to :
The air cooling fins
front strut tower rubber
A-Arm bushings
Rear trailing arm bushings
Rubber roof holders
Sail vinyl with metal trim
and the Squirter hose GB I have yet to list.

This can be shipped in a large FedEx ground package pretty easily, they hit the recipient for $20 in customs fees for clearance.

The key is the cost for redistribution. I can put all into one package and have weights to figure out the Canadian postage cost.

Just thought I'd float this out there to see if it would work.

Its a good thought Mark but I don't think it would work.
Canada is a BIG country and there are 914 guys from coast to coast.
After re-distribution I'm sure it would be cheaper for each person to order directly from you!!

Just trying to figure out a way to help out. biggrin.gif

Is shipping USPS an option?

When I get stuff shipped I prefer USPS as you don't get dinged on brokerage that bad.

Also if the customer lives not far from the border, there are warehouses that specializes in receiving packages for Canadians for a reasonable fee. they just have to add the address on their CC card.

The shipping hub would be best but it's just too hard to coordinate and a pain since we don't have flat rate boxes like you do.

What we are talking about is local group purchases.
When we have 2 or 3 guys in our group that need stuff we'll order everything at once and share shipping. This should work if we all live in the same area.

Regular post is cheaper, but Mark doesn't want to ship this way, I've tried. He wants to ship Priority Post which is the same or more expensive than Fed-Ex.
I know I would buy more stuff but shipping is bloody expensive. I know for sure I would get into the GB's, I've wanted to many times, but they're always onesies and twosies and because of shipping not worth it.
Unless the orders are big enough shipping kills the deal.

If I was making a few points I'd offer to be the hub, maybe monthly or bi-monthly, but Mark has been resistant to holding order(s) till they're big enough to make shipping costs feasible.
For example I did the black friday thing two years ago about $100 worth of goods cost me just as much for shipping, then add exchange I was into almost $250 for $100 worth of stuff. When I order from LN, which is minimum always over $1k, I only pay just over 70% extra with exchange, get that value up to $3-4K and it can be just over 50%. Also LN gives me a good enough dealer discount that I can make a couple bucks and it's worth driving to Toronto. I've also thought about stocking 914rubber stuff, but the Canadian 914 market is just too small to make it worth the investment.
I have a US address/service and I use it for my orders from LN, but I have to drive to the other side of Toronto. A large order this could work, but I basically waste the better part of the day fighting traffic, so again if I'm not making a penny it's not worth it.

The flip side and nothing to do with Mark is coordinating the Canadians to do something of this nature is like herding cats.
Also Canadians for the most part are not happy with me making a few points, but fact is I'm a biz, so unless I'm making a couple bucks it's not worth putting it through my books.
As much as I like helping others in the hobby I have a family to feed.
Believe me, I've looked at this from every angle.

Mark....this is absolutely true. The cost of shipping stops me from ordering tons of stuff!! In Calgary there are 5 or 6 of us in our 914 group. I'm going to try to organize a group purchase to share the shipping costs which are significant. In most cases it's the same price as the parts purchased, as you know.
I think keeping it local is the only way to go...

I live near the border and use a U.S. PO Box for my orders, which works well for me personally.

I'm open to the idea of acting as a hub but, as Mark H says above, I suspect the logistics aren't great, and there likely aren't any overall savings if I expect to get compensated for my time.

Local group buys as suggested by MikeM would seem to be the ideal method. How many world members live in the Kingston area? shades.gif

We do actually ship reg post for what we can. I have just learned that there is now a service listed under USPS for the first class packages.

This previously was not available under USPS.com.
It's not a shipping option under stamps.com yet so I suspect, it may be a new option. Yes, we can ship this way. There is no tracking, but can produce a certificate of mailing. Just not sure how fast it will be.

Also, Godaddy doesn't have the ability for us to integrate this into the website so it will be an item we will have to refund, but looks like it may work. I just ran a 2lb package to Ontario and it was $16.
