914World.com _ 914World Garage _ WCR 2018 - Newberg Oregon June 7-10thNEWBERG OR

Posted by: Mikey914 Jan 24 2018, 11:18 PM

OK we were having some issues with the 1st hotel in Forest Grove. They would require all alcohol to be sold by them, no outside food, and not enough room for trailer parking. Would have been nice but the final straw was they wouldn't sell a keg, they wanted a by the glass. That and they had an issue of us hanging out in the parking lot in the evenings. They wanted to rent us even space.
We may revisit this but too many issues for us at this time to go forward.

We are staying at
TRAVELODGE NEWBERG
2816 PORTLAND ROAD
NEWBERG, OR 97132 US
Phone: (503) 537-5000
Fax: (503) 537-9099
Email: wyndham99w@gmail.com

The cost is $108 a night. Reg rate is $128, so not a huge savings, but good location.

This is already set up use code WCR 2018 to reserve

June 7 Thursday
We are still trying to solidify but we have one of the 2 options planned
1- Newberg drive in (about a 2 min drive at the most)
We have reached out to a local VW club to try to takeover the drive-in for Thursday. Waiting to hear back about the min number of cars needed to be open Thursday.

2- Auto event - Pats Acres. They do allow cars but also do high power go carts. This is about a 40 min drive, but the drive is nice. The problem is it would have ot be earlier. 2:00 ish.
More to follow on Thursday plans as they hash out

June 8 Friday - Wine Drive will be combined as a poker run too- twisty country roads and visits to a few local wineries. Spouses / significant others may appreciate this event and hopefully more can make it in for the Friday fun. There will be prizes (PMB sponsoring ) and lots of fun

Dinner looks like it will be Pizza and BYOB (beverage) parking lot "tech" sessions - will be providing some heaters

June 9th Saturday - 9:14 Actual Tech session for about an hour followed buy the "distance drive" twisty back roads, lunch photo scavenger hunt.

10:30 -
Distance drive - will be to the Oregon coast with an open lunch at a local restaurant / tap house beautify views, lots of picture opportunities.
Back at 16:00 - 16:30

Dinner Banquet 18:30 - 21:30 with awards and Raffle

Will be at Black Bear - Literally one block away. No driving.
More "tech" sessions in parking lot after

We have made arrangements so that we can have an one RV "security" if we have a taker. Sorry only one.

Sunday depart

Will be setting up the registration as soon as we have the costs confirmed
Each registered primary participant will get a T shirt and swag bag on check in.

Additional registrants get T shirt and second poker run registration.

Registration for the 2018 WCR is OPEN! Click the link below. Please contact me directly at carolinewhitesell@gmail.com if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing all of you.

The thrash begins...

Posted by: rhodyguy Jan 25 2018, 07:14 AM

Much better. I didn't think the beer and parking lot situation was going to pass muster. The 8th is my birthday. No need for expensive gifts. Inexpensive ones are ok.

Posted by: TC 914-8 Jan 25 2018, 08:06 AM

I’m in and booked, $103/night on the BW app confused24.gif
Thanks Mark and team putting this together !!!!

Posted by: ConeDodger Jan 25 2018, 10:22 AM

They use some kind of formula that averages the price over a period of time. Like right now, it’s $104 on Hotels.com. Try to book the same room in May and it might be $122.

They are just holding a price over time.

I will buy you a liquid present biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mikey914 Jan 25 2018, 10:51 AM

It looks like you may be able to book from some of the other sites cheaper so by all means do so. I'm not on the hook for the rooms and we would hold til May a block of 20. So if you use Hotels.com or a site like that you can get other bonuses like stay 10 nights booked through them get the 11th free.

It is a busy time of year so do check all and let us know what you find.
Thanks,
Mark

Maybe hook up AT pat's acres? We have to be out by 2 or start at 2? Hotel first shortens the window for fun. They will hold our reservations.

Matt has the hook up out there, but it's expensive if there's not a lot of peeps. So may just stick to their carts. Still flushing that out.

Posted by: ConeDodger Jan 25 2018, 02:00 PM

Just a note for any future WCR planners. Mark knows this so not for him.

We never sign performance contracts. While these might get us a better price, the huge disincentive is that if we say we will book 50 rooms and we only book 49 or less, whoever signed the contract is on the hook for the rest of the rooms and possibly a penalty. Don’t ask how we know... blink.gif 914World.com is not an organization. We are all free agents so be careful you don’t sign anything that puts you on the hook. Doubletree went after the signator for $5000.

This is also why we don’t use Hilton or Doubletree hotels.

Fun! I live in Newberg, handy. :-) That's also the Alfa Romeo Owners of Oregon 50th Anniversary celebration too, so lots of classics on the roads in the area that weekend! I'm going to have some difficult decisions to make!

Posted by: rhodyguy Jan 25 2018, 02:43 PM

Thanks for the heads up about the AR folks. That could impact room avaiability.

I am in but haven't made reservations yet. Glad to know it will be your birthday, but finding the right gift? Hmmm. That will take some thinking and I bet some are way ahead of me on that one.
I wonder if it will rain? Or if I will be fighting it out with Italian cars (for parking).

I believe the AROO activities are going to be centered in the Lake Oswego/Bridgeport area, so I wouldn't guess a great impact hotel wise, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the rally routes are going to be shared, there's some great roads out this way!

Head east from Cresent city and take 99(?) to grant's pass. The smith river canyon is a super drive. Continuing north from CC is a time consuming affair. Limited roads crossing the costal Oregon mountains. The road west from Bend is a fun one too.

We will be opening up the registration in the next 10 days. We have been trying to finalize costs. It looks like we only have $175 from the year before. Normally it was about $1000 but it looks like we are going to have to cough up some funds to get the party started. Artwork for the shirts are done, at least the prelim version. We may make a few tweeks, but this is it.

So had Mikey and Caroline helping to put this together and wanted to explain a little about how this is working this year.

First we are allowing guys to register for a single day, if they can only be there Friday or Saturday for the Drives.

I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT DAY REGISTRANTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WIN THE PRIZES OR DRAWINGS.
Also no shirt is included.

You will want the full registration to get in on the goodies. PMB is sponsoring the Friday drive. We also have a prize as part of the Sat Drive and the banquet. We did this as we have some 911 guys that wanted to tag along.

Day registrants will get drive decals for drive they sign up for and full registrants will get both.

We are also starting with only $170 in the bank and will have to pay for much of the expenses out of pocket to bring this all together.

This takes us to the Friday lunch options - We have an opportunity to have a sandwiches brought in by one of the wineries, that has been most generous with allowing us to have lunch there at no charge, and they are even bringing in beer for us too. I highly recommend signing up for the lunch here and even have the vegetarian option for Elliot ! We will actually get a short tour of this winery about 10 min to show us the process, they use and they are one of the few that actually bottle their own too. We have a great even planned and as interest in our cars grows we will probably be meeting some future 914 owners too.

Registration is now open and we will be doing some preview drives of the roads this week. They are some of my favorite roads in the state. This is going to be a lot of fun. Who is ready and who is on the fence?

I have been going to WCR's since 2010 and have yet to bring my 914.
It is always a fun weekend with or without a 914.
Many of us have seemingly perpetual projects or revolving projects.
I completed one car but sold it before WCR came around.

I am working toward getting my car there this years buy it is going to be a strech.

Yes.
We have the drives planned so you will want to register for the day at least. However, if you want to do be able to win the poker run or any swag on Saturday you will need to register for the complete event. If you register before the 20th a T shirt is included.
After it will be too late as we have to place the order prior to have them made.
On that note we will be opening up t shirt sales shortly for those that cant attend but want a shirt, or just want more than one.

Made motel reservation today. Was putting it off because I was still a bit on the fence over physical stamina. One thing I am not clear on. Is there a Thursday event? Coming from afar I would be pulling in Wednesday then. Made that reservation, but can cancel and arrive Thursday. Hope that car and driver both hold out. 30 hr, 2032 mi if I take I-94. I-80 is a bit longer. One nice thing is that even the interstates have great scenery when you get a bit (half way) west.

DAMN! how many times am I expected to enter the data so I may attend this gala affair? keeps sending me back to the field with red 'must include'. repeatedly, to no avail.

I have these cool pieces of paper made from trees. I write to whom it's payable, the amount, sign the piece of paper, put it in an envelope, stick a stamp on it, put the envelope in a blue metal box and BOOM! done.

any chance that one of those pieces of paper might got the job done?

My apologies but I cannot make the trip this year. I just canceled my hotel reservation so a room should have opened up.
I hope to see you all soon beerchug.gif first.gif driving.gif

Sorry to hear you won't make it this year Tony.

Posted by: JRust May 22 2018, 11:50 AM

Dang sorry to hear you won't make it Tony. I am unsure if I'll have my car ready. Going to the shop to spend some time Saturday with my wrench. So I should know this weekend.

Although there is still a chance I will have to go out of state. My daughter is pregnant with our first grandchild. She is Due June 20th so as long as she doesn't pop early I should be good. As soon as I get the call she is headed to the hospital I drop everything & hit the road though. So should things happen early confused24.gif

Hi folks,

Is there an official schedule of what and when for this event? Was something posted or emailed that I missed?

I'm registered but neither of my 914s are road ready. I plan to show up in my Kellison. (At least it's VW powered.)

Thanks,
-Jeff

First post in this thread.

Posted by: Jeffy May 23 2018, 03:12 PM

Yes, I read that months ago as the not-yet-solidified schedule.

My question was more toward if the variables were pinned down.

I guess it doesn't really matter, I'll show up Thursday and go from there.

As was stated by someone a few posts back, many thanks go to the folks arranging this event. I know it is a lot of work.

Posted by: rhodyguy May 23 2018, 03:28 PM

Looking forward to viewing your VW powered Kellison. I've only seen chevy powered ones. Fun group of nice people. You'll have a good time.

I e-mailed Caroline and asked about times of the drives planned for Friday & Saturday. I got this info back.

"Friday morning will start at 9:14 for a "tech session" at the hotel parking lot. Then the winery drive will start around 10:45 and go until 5:00ish...depending on how long we stay at each place. Then we will have dinner at the hotel that night. Saturday morning will most likely start early at they're planning a drive to the coast; 9:14ish and end late afternoon. The dinner is back in Newberg."

A Black Bear! Great choise. Mega portions, great food. Chicken fried steak covered the plate. We stopped at one coming back from CA.

Posted by: Matty900 May 23 2018, 05:24 PM

On Saturday morning there is a Cars and coffee just a few twisty roads away in the next town over. It is at the World of Speed Museum. http://www.worldofspeed.org/featured-exhibits/
I will be doing the complete drive next weekend from there to figure out timing and photo opportunities. At that point we could see if it makes sense to stay longer and actually visit the museum with the Porsche exhibit and then do the drive.
What are your thoughts?

Well my car is officially not going to be ready. Went over today with my spare transmission. Didn't realize my other tranny was locked in Gear. Well I figured it out before I took it over but wasn't sure of the cause. It is internal so I need to pull the stack to see what is up. Luckily I had a spare tranny with locking spool & block off plate. So pulled the rear diff today. Installed the locking spool & installed the block off plate. Guy modding my cradle so it would line up how I want it is what screwed me. He had the cradle over a month. Finally brought it back but still wasn't right. It's getting test fitted again this Wednesday. Still need a bunch of minor stuff once it is back up in place. SO I'd be kidding myself to think he will finish it in 9 days. So I will not be bringing my 914 headbang.gif AGAIN hissyfit.gif

My car will be staying with a mechanic for the next 2 weeks or so. The engine is leaking too much and I'm having it resealed. Looks like I'll be driving on of our Fords. I can flat tow a car with my Flex, if anyone would rather ride with us. I have the tow bar that gets bolted to the car

Posted by: worn May 30 2018, 01:42 PM

Sorting tools for the trip. We leave Saturday routed past the Tetons. I found out that my marvelous plan for running the fan for the oil cooler didn't actually send power to the fan, so that is fixed. Also, found out that my paint job sucks. Not the time to be worrying about that though. Drove the car about 30 miles yesterday and I have to say the taller gears are going to be a god send. New 4th is the old 5th and 5th is a flipped HB.

I will post when we leave. A bit more than 2100 miles from here to there. Hope my back holds out. I bought a self inflating lumbar support. headers, so we only are gonna have cool air.

Good luck! I leave tomorrow. Just picked up an extra relay and other spares. I realized I am oriented towards spares for the 2056 not the 3.2. Packed my clothes today, and have them loaded. My passenger is being extraordinarily brave in packing a duffel of sorts. The hair dryer is redundant with the top in the trunk. With my clothes. Getting cooked. She says she isn’t about to drive, but one of us has been in the seat of a logging truck, and it ain’t me, so I know we are golden.

Sorry I won’t get to meet you a second time. Hard work to make things work.

Well, it rained on my car for a few miles but we made it to Sioux Falls. Pulled the door card off on the driver side before we made it out of the driveway. It’s a 72, so the window popped out of the worm drive. Now have to reattach the door latch inside of the passenger side.

More embarrassing is a problem with the wiring to the triple gauge. The fuel gauge reads full all the time and the brake warning light flickers. The SD speed limit is 80, so that means hours at 3000 revs tomorrow blue skies as we pulled in for a rest at the motel.

Maybe Yellowstone by Monday. Or Tuesday.

My mechanic just called to let me know that cylinders #3 & #4 intake valve guides are loose on my fresh engine (12k miles - 4% leak down per cylinders prior)

- i just completed a 3500 mile run to socal and back with 2 track days - i made sure to stay under the redline throughout, as well as not to turn off the engine when hot (let cool down 1st) - i hope to get an update soon

- i don't want to be "that guy," but if the 914 is down, i'll bring my early 911, and i'll stay in the rear (but not behind a water cooler or newer porsche, damnit!)

- this is why i have valve adjustment/oil changes, inspections done every 3500 miles

thanks again to all of the organizers and sponsors throughout!!!

Pulled in to Gillette WY.
This morning I fixed Donnas door latch pull. Weak clip, tried to cable tie, but the lasso missed. Appropriate because we passed a rodeo today. Broc riding.
Then the temp gauge started to flutter with conniptions and died in the red. All of yesterday was 70 mph with the gauge on the low end. So...op looks ok. Settled for not going to the 80 mph speed limit and kept moving. There may be a short, although I ran most of that wire myself. There is a fundamental problem of matching a 46 year old roller (fuel sender) with a 30 something engine temp sender with gauges of similar vintage and expecting them to all work on the first big test.
Here I am in the driveway fixing the window.

Any advice on the temp issue? Gas mileage is about 25, so I don’t need that to work. Other than that I am just old. Can’t blame Porsche for that.

i was so psyched to have my freshly completed '76 914-4 "2.1S" at this event - only 14 years to get to this point!

i was so happy to have everything done that my recent 3500 mile trip just completed included 2800 miles with the pac west r gruppe to their annual treffen near solvang, ca and track day at willow springs (last time the 914 was at willow springs was the 1st 914 west coast classic starting in san jose) - 2nd track day was with the apha club at pacific raceways last week - maybe i should have taken my early 911 to those events and saved the 914 for the WCR?!

(here's my lonely silver 914 at the bottom of the treffen parking lot in this clip - a few other 914-6's were there too

You can do this with four jack stands and a ball of string. And a tape measure.

Fixed my temp gauge. Lead was touching the case. Free waffles.

Posted by: Tbrown4x4 Jun 4 2018, 08:31 AM

I put my new 914rubber brake master cylinder in last night and bled the brakes a few times. Never had a better pedal. I'll bleed it a few more time for good measure. Also fixed the parking brake. No more leaving it in gear and hoping the worn out engine will hold it!

The jack stands are used to run the strings between.
Then you have to measure and move the stands around until you have teh strings parallel to each other and the center-line of the car. It is a PIT but it can work.

I have someone I will ask about Smart strings and maybe even some digital scales.
He does a fair amount of suspension prep and may not be willing to be without these for most of a week but I can ask.

Anyone know if there is flat level pavement at the Hotel to do this type work?

770 miles today - overnight in Elko, NV.

Yesterday, driving northbound, north of KC, I saw a car I don't think I've seen on the road for over 35 years. In the southbound lane was a Fiat X1/9 - thought they all had turned to rust dust - didn't they start rusting on the assembly line?

No on the string gauge at Rothsport. All we carry in the race tools are toe plates.

Got the new rear wheel bearing in my car last night. So I should be good to go.
Tonight is checking the front wheel bearings on Mike's (Warpig) car.
Changed out roll pin on shifter console. Helped clean the window frame for a new windshield.
Wednesday night, yet to be determined. Change of plans, working on Matt's oil tubes Wednesday AM then heading to Rothsport. Jeff's going to teach me how to do an alignment and corner balance on my car.
Wednesday PM or Thursday AM. Change out one of the push rod tubes in Matt's car.
Looks like I got 5 of the 6 leakers to stop dripping on the first swing at it.
Leaves Thursday open ............... piratenanner.gif

Twin falls Idaho. Pulled the trunk latch off in Yellowstone. Had to undo the hinge shoulder bolts to move the front edge up. Oil catch can is puking and went over a pass out of the Tetons on 22 that switchbacks about a lot of thousands in a mile two. Watched the temp climb on the way up and plunge back low on the other side.

Be glad to see Oregon tomorrow.

I can probably borrow the Longacre digit scales.

Is there any interest in checking wheel weights and corner balance?

I have to go to the shop this afternoon and pick up the equipment and figure out how to get it into my Jetta.

My thought was to allow some people a chance to see the weight distribution on their cars and share some info on the principles and process. It is not a well understood aspect of chassis set-up.

I have done too many of these in a clean shop to get excited about doing it in a parking lot.

If I think I can fit it all in my Jetta I'll bring the scales and ramps.

After my cornerbalance and alignment were done at IPB Autosport, my car handled so incredibly I was astounded! The very next autocross, I beat everything except two formula cars (Ford and a V) most of you don’t have the adjustability built into your cars to take full advantage and it is expensive. But it is like the difference between a hammer and a razor.

I assume Jim got these as a loan from Ron at IPB who is a member here. aktion035.gif

Well this didn't work out. sad.gif

I went down to Ron Kain's shop, IPB Autosport to pickup the SmartStrings and figure out if I could fit the digital scales.
I measured the ramps and they are too long to fit in the trunk of my Jetta and I decided against putting them in the back seat.

And we could not find the SmartStrings. They were not in the corner of the shop they normally live and I looked around for quite awhile and could not find them. Ron has not been using them for awhile and does not know where they are. He didn't know they weren't in the far corner of the shop until this evening.

So no strings and no scales, we'll have to do a tech session on alignment another time.

There are no 'firmly planned' Thursday plans. Usually just check in. The drive in is just something fun people who arrive early enough can do.

Do you need Mark or Matt's number?

Matt seems to be confirming on Facebook that the drive in thing will happen. Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Had planned and really wanted to come out to see Cary's shop today or at least the drive in tonight but could not get the car started this morning -- no fuel pump -- and have a very soft brake pedal after a master cylinder replacement.

Worked all day on these, and after lots of tracing continuity on the relay board, found a short in the main 25amp fuse tab rivets, and got that repaired and now the car starts!

But, before I can come out I need to get the air out of the brake system. I bench bled the MC before installing it, but...not good now. Might be getting air in at the line connections on top, or...?

If all fails, I will come out tomorrow in my Vanagon, if that's okay with folks...this is my first WCR...

Hope you make it! With brake bleeding it seems as if at first you don’t succeed you will later on.

Don't let those showers stop you, Jim. Remember RT66 2016 . Sure it rained but every time we reached a destination or stopping point the rain would quit until we were back in the cars. The 914 Gods are with ya'll. driving.gif driving.gif driving.gif driving.gif driving.gif

Thanks, I would appreciate that very much.

On the plus side about the weather, at least the beer will stay cold.

Big thank you to everyone involved in the WCR and especially the organisers, Mark, Caroline and everyone for making us so welcome. I even learned quite a few things about our machines, not to mention making new friends!

I know the 914 is a tremendous car but it definitely has owners to match! Can't wait to see everyone again next time!

Sorry we buzzed off early, but the Coast was calling. Fantastic hailstones they have out here!!

Best to everyone from Dave (Archie the Brit) and Li Lodge.. [attachmentid=654209] Attached Image

Thanks to all that attended, and supported the event. We has some discussions about next year and are looking for someone to step up and do the planning and organization for WCR 2019!

Also, we are looking toward 2020, the 50th anniversary for our car!. There has been some talk that this could be an extended drive that allows folks to overnight in different locations as the group moved, this may allow for others to join in and pop out at different intervals. The weekend festivities being somewhere in the middle so it's somewhat centrally located. More to come on that.

Again a big thanks to Caroline Whitesell for really helping to get this all together in a neat package!

The PNW weather is just another challenge. Tough it out and Drive for blue sky.

Great job by the team!

Yeah, it is just like I have always loved. Less than half a mile from the parking lot the cone set screw backed out of the u joint connecting the rod through the firewall to the rod to the side shift console. Not wanting to trust the factory jack, I rolled to straddle a swale I the pavement. This allowed me space to reach under the car. Of course it also was there to channel rainwater, and yes it was raining.

My heroic wife, Donna jiggled the shifter until the set screw holes lined up. Also she sacrificed her hand mirror from her purse. Holes lined up, set screw back in and whadayaknow? I have an unused wcr shirt to change into.

Dried off and resting near Spokane. Thanks everyone!! Especially the organizers, Cary, Caroline and Jack for a trip I will always treasure.

Made it home without any incidents. We had rain down to about Medford and of course the moment we cross into Kalifornia, the clouds were gone and the temperature went up into the 90s.

Glad to see everyone had fun. Don and I had the top down for the rain on Sat drive, and we didn't have to slow too much so we stayed pretty dry. heat worked well too - bonus.

Pretty sure it was Amoy's hand. 3 of a kind. Cary had 2 Queens and an Ace, we thought he had won it initially.

I rode with Mark in the morning and Greenie in the afternoon with the top off, in the rain. We didn't get too wet, and drove on some really great roads.
I also got a ride with on Friday with Jim in his 3.6l 914-6.
Thank you to the organizers, Mark, Matt, Mikey and Caroline, and everybody who helped out.

No, i had the 3 of a kind with 2s.

Amoy actually had a flush but she left before we did the drawing and i didn't notice until after the dinner.

So technically, Amoy won the brake rebuild coupon!

This isn’t quite home, but it sure is nice. We have about 3300 miles in so far. Speed limit is 80, which can be fun, but a lot of work hour after hour.

I had a great time, and have to say you are all perfect.

Just a recap on this. after Tshirt and hat sales have closed out we have $833.90 in the kitty. Some of that was also due to a donation for sales of a rotisserie the Rhodyguy helps put together. Refresh my memory who donated it. I want to thank them too.

All in all a successful event on the ledger. We did also donate some into event, but really it was all of you that made it work.

Thanks to all of you for helping to make this happen.

I'll also be bumping the 2019 thread with this.
