914World.com _ 914World Garage _ My first 'Big' trip in the 914...

Posted by: CptTripps Jun 2 2005, 09:43 PM

Here's the trip. I leave tomorrow morning, and return Sat night.

Fri 10:00am Cleveland, OH to Columbus, OH - 125mi/2h

Fri 3:00pm Columbus, OH to Auburn, IN - 191mi/4h

Sat 4:00pm - Auburn, IN to Cleveland, OH - 211mi/4h

500mi in 2 days...I think it is doable. If Scott can put 6K on the Porscharu in 2 weeks, I think I can make it! smilie_pokal.gif

I've put 800ish miles on her since the restoration, but I'm a bit nervous. I'm changing to new pads before I leave, and then I'm out the door.

Wish me luck! I won't have 'club' access for a while, but if anyone is along the way, can you email me your number in case I get stuck?? doug@hardman.org will go to my BlackBerry.

ill be putting 200 on mine sunday, if it makes it.

Posted by: jim912928 Jun 2 2005, 10:00 PM

no problem..you'll be fine. After ripping mine totally apart like you did and reassembling it...I took it from South Bend IN to near detroit (the MWC) for it's maiden voyage! Put about 600mi on it without an incident. I was still bleeding brakes 30 minutes before I left!

HAVE FAITH!

Posted by: Series9 Jun 2 2005, 10:03 PM

Mine had 50 miles on it when I pulled out of the driveway for the drive to CA for the WCC. It had 2000 when I pulled back in.

You'll be fine.

Posted by: fiid Jun 2 2005, 10:16 PM

I did 1600mi in a weekend once (although not in a 914) Washington DC to Morris, IL and back again. You'll be fine. Good luck anyway though. You might want to put a bra on to protect that fantastic paint-job of yours tho...

We did 2900 miles in just over 60 hours. driving.gif That was the trip out to Scotts place to get the 928.

I just took my first "long trip" in my teener yesterday but it was only 80 miles away. Half way there the car quit running. I would wait a bit and start it back up. It would run a bit then die. Luckily I was on my way to Brad Mayeur (914 Limited) and I called him to tell him I was dead in the water. He told me he would hookup his trailer to come and get me. So I waited. As I was waiting I started hearing a bubbling sound, you know like air trying to escape. It was coming from the gas tank, yep I removed the cap and there was quite a large vacumn. After that I could start the car. I called Brad (who hadn't left yet) and told him what I had found and that I was one my way. I make it there with no problems.

The problem was that the PO has connected all of the vents together in the gas tank/overflow tank. So I had a totally closed system, no where to vent the tank. That is fixed now.

Good luck on the trip.

Mike

BTW: My Uncle, who I'm picking up, is an OLD-SCHOOL P-Car guy...he had a 356-A in high-school, and drives a Ferrari 328-GTS so I'm thinking the two of us will be able to figure things out!

500 miles a long trip? I do close to that for some AX's I drive to! In addition to what you are carrying here's what I had for my epic 2600 mile cross country 914 trip; extra relays, accelerator and clutch cables, spare rotor and cap, points and condensor, some bailing wire and duct tape. ...I never used any of them.

Oh yeah ...and never trust your gas gauge! I ran out of gas on a deserted part of Highway 40 in Texas. I was able to get emergency reception on my cell phone call local sherrif. The guy they sent out to get me gas was hilarious, beatup old pickup truck, he jumps out and he has hip boots on covered with cow $hit. " I never seen me one of them cars before" "thats one of them porch cars"

There is an emergency contact list that someone had made up last year after Slits took his long road trip. I dont remember who it was that had it but it is an Excel spreadsheet with names and numbers all over the country. You should be able to find out who has it doing a search. Or someone will chime in with who has it and how you go about getting it. I am old and have CRS dry.gif

I feel the fear.....thinking about driving mine on it's first trip beyond walking distance from home this Sunday...Colorado Springs to exotic car show in Denver area.....

I took a road trip in my 308 Ferrari one day after getting it out of the shop (and just a month afer buying it)...Colorado Springs to Las Vegas. THAT was a scary (but un-eventful relaibility wise) trip

Posted by: Greg Bell Jun 3 2005, 01:29 PM

Paa! I drove mine 1000 miles from Milwaukee to Georgia just last week--and that was after buying it sight unseen--now that was stupid!! aktion035.gif

Not one problem! smilie_pokal.gif

Posted by: CptTripps Jun 3 2005, 09:50 PM

Here I sit at the hotel in Fort Wayne...at the end of an un-eventfull day!

Temps were 190-220 all day...400mi so far, and all is well.

The Petronics pads are AWESOME! Glad I put them on this morning.

Satelite radio worked great....I'm super happy with everything.

Having her out in the parking lot of a hotel without an alarm to wake me up is a little un-nerving, but I'll get over it. I parked her under a light, outside our door...

Thanks for a good wishes from everyone. I'll let ya know how we end up tomorrow when I get home.

don't worry about not hearing the thief trying to take it. you'll hear the tranny when he's trying to find reverse. taking lots of extra stuff ensures you will never need it. smile.gif glad to hear the trip is going smoothly.

"Get ya motor runnin'...head out on the highway...lookin' for adventure..."

Yeah, I always worry about theives too. But the above poster makes a good point, my 914 for one is a tempramental beast that takes a knowing hand for it to run smoothly.

*****thread hijack*****

Lotus 65,

If you want to meet some local 914's and their owners, come out to the MAC autocross on Sunday in St. Cloud. There will be at least 3 914's there: Myself in my fairly stock 1970, Ottox914 in his "improved" 1973. And a non member in his all out race 1974. A nice diverse group of 914's.

here is the link to the autocross...

Well I was in my '76 coming back to LA from Laguna Seca on the 101 (300 miles). There are stretches of the 101 you'd swear are a stones throw from pluto - 'specially in the middle of the nite. Well all of a sudden, the thing hiccups. Got a shot of adrenaline. No cell, but packed lots of junk food. Was able to transmogrify its energy content into willpower, overwhelming the teeners attempt to go into funk mode. Got home w/o further incident. Moral: cheese puffs, donuts, and diet pepsi may allow you to avert disaster, but forms an ungodly mixture in your tummy. icon8.gif

Greg Robbins is the guy, goes by the alias, uh ... Greg Robbins. happy11.gif

Greg can set you up with the list, at least you'll have the razor blades along, if things go really badly and you feel you need to do yourself harm. unsure.gif

Here I am...back in Shaker Heights, in my own bed. 914 is in the garage sleeping after a great trip.

Temp never got over 220. I finally fixed my oil-pressure guage...just had the ground, and signal packwards. That was all good too.

More details tomorrow, but everything was PERFECT!

Man...these things are SO worth the effort!
