914World.com _ 914World Garage _ informal 914 owners meet in Redwood City on Friday

Posted by: Mueller Jun 2 2005, 11:52 PM

Tommorow afternoon, say at about 4pm, a few of us* will be in Redwood City next door to HPH to exchange parts and lies about the progress we are making on our vehicles.....possible dinner gathering as well since we might as well sit down for dinner and drink then sit in traffic......

*Andy,
Mark D,
Jenny
and myself (and my wife if I can talk her into it)

So...whats the difference between an informal and a formal gathering?

So I guess all the gatherings we have down here in So Cal are informal including the WCC cause I saw a lot of people wearing shorts. In fact, I dont think I have ever seen Elliot or Aaron wearing anything but shorts and flip flops. "*" too, he is always in shorts.

yes, but that's because you socal guys don't have no style ... biggrin.gif

i *think* what mueller was refering to is the fact that this will be our first "brad-less" shop experience ...

thank god he left all the tools and parts and the air compressor!

Too bad that compressor is 220 3-phase. I'd buy it from him. It's a damn nice compressor.

The compressor was mine, I sold it to Brad since I didn't want to deal with the 3phase at the time....Mark, you can convert it to single phase motor or get one of them many 3 phase converters available...not too cheap however....

actually what I meant by "informal" was no real plans, so don't show up to expect us doing anything special...mostly just BS'ing and trying to find our parts scattered thou out the shop...

Posted by: McMark Jun 3 2005, 10:56 AM

Yeah, it would probably be best to just hang out, talk shop, and order some pizzas or something. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mueller Jun 3 2005, 11:01 AM

if Andy brings his 914 we can throw the wideband 02 reader on it smash.gif

Posted by: nebreitling Jun 3 2005, 11:04 AM

i'm up in the city and won't be able to make it down -- but could you guys get brads scales (they look like bathroom scales, the levers are at britain's) and give them to jenny (or britain if he comes)?? puh-lease?

I might still have a rather large single phase motor, I'd have to check, but it might be up to the duty of running a large compressor.

I might stop by. I have a few items I left there. Is the o2 sensor going to be there? I really could use a reading to help ease my mind about the running condition. What time is everyone getting there? I dont get off work until 5pm

Posted by: nine14cats Jun 3 2005, 11:59 AM

Sounds like fun!....but I can't make it as I'll be at the Bryan Adams / Def Leppard concert in San Jose...(blast from the past).

Mike,

I'll see you at lunch next week.

Thanks,

Bill P.

that concert should be fun if it happens.....strike going on due to non-union stage workers or something like that....

Chris, the sensor will be there until Mueller leaves. He's picking it up. I expect Andy will still be there when you get there so you can get yer stuff.

and that time is dependant on how much my wife "complains" biggrin.gif

if all else fails, the O2 reader will be at my house this weekend for me to start tuning my Link ECU...Mark might be swinging on down to my house to help me and pick up stuff for his shop....

Shit I might need to take a rain check if people are already headed down. I won't get there until 6 at least because of traffic. I guess I should ask, who will still be there at 6pm?? beerchug.gif

Did I miss something?...
Is Bradholio gone? Back in jail? Fled the country?
Done at HPH?

What's the deal here?

Inquiring non-running 914 owners want to know.

first, could this have been part of my problem? this pic was taken with the car jacked up and the wheel off the ground. note that it didn't move down, the sway bar was holding it up pretty much without any movement ...

Now that's some sway-bar pre-loading from hell!

Posted by: SirAndy Jun 4 2005, 12:18 AM

here's the scoop. when we lowered the car (quite a while ago) i dropped it down to 4" clearance (from the floorpan to ground). i didn't realize that the car was riding on the rubber bump-stops on top of the shock. (which is not all that good!) ...

then, 2 weeks ago, preparing the car for the AX in marina, the racing slicks were rubbing on the dust covers, so we decided to take them off. while we were in there, brad suggested to cut one of the 3 sections of the rubber bump stops to give me a bit more shock movement.
sure, sounded good, so off it came ...

the next day at the AX, i was surprise to find that the car was even lower than before. wacko.gif
didn't give it much thought right then and there, but later realized that because the car had been sitting on the rubber stops already, cutting of one section made it drop even further.

now, that means, all this time i was driving with *NO* (zero, zilch) shock movement in the front!
all there was was the softness of the rubber bump stops ... huh.gif

so today, while looking at the shocks, i also realized that it's *NOT* a good idea to remove the dust covers if you still have a stock top shock mount!
the top of the dust shield actually acts as a really big washer, preventing the shock to move upward *past* the top mount. the stock top mount has a rubber insert and without the dust cover, the shock will simply bend the rubber and the top thread of the shock rod will hit the inside of your hood every time you hit a bump and leave a nice scratch and DENT in your hood ... icon8.gif

so back on came the dust covers.

then i re-indexed the torsion bar adjusters to give me more room for raising the car.
HINT: do not re-index more than ONE spline at the time. chances are, it's going to be too much, even if you think you'll need a lot of adjustment ...

see pic below (2 notches on the torsion bars) ...
i did fit right in the neighborhood with my low rider 914 laugh.gif you think the front is too high? idea.gif
