I drove Skline's car home, the big 1300 mile trip in a 914-4 2.0 FI........And that was enough for me. I pushed the car into the garage and sold the engine, FI, Tires, wheels and a few other 4cyl related items. Here is a couple of shots of the progress of Scott's old car. There has been a lot done to it you will not see. I just snapped some shots last night to give a quick update on this project. So please excuse the mess around the car. I have also been working on A LOT of customer cars lately.
Attached image(s)
That first shot was about a week ago. I was preping the front trunk for paint. I am no paint or body guy for sure, but it is turning out nice and shinny. So cool for that.
Attached image(s)
You can see I didn't pull the tank out, but I did pull out the headlight motors and wiring harnes, ect. It is hard to get back up around the fresh air box. But I think with a little more carefull masking and maybe a touch up spray can, I can get the last bit of green covered up. I used a single stage laquer. Porsche Stone Gray.
Attached image(s)
You can see all the green still way deep under the cowel/windshield. funny thing is, you don't see it at all just standing looking into the trunk. The flash on my camera had to catch it. Oh well. I don't really want to pull all that crap out of there.
Since a 914 is modular, I was able to paint the cowel and windshield frame now as well.

You can see above I painted the inside of the roll bar area, but not the engine bay yet. It still needs to be preped and finished for a six engine. Here is a shot of some pieces painted a few weeks back seperate from the rest of the car. Painted inside and out, all of them.
Attached image(s)
Messix(Troy) stopped by a couple of times while I was painting some of these parts. We both thought they turned out pretty good. BTW Troy, thanks for the help on the drivers door! It was a little tweeked, but we fixed it.
These are stacked, but all 3 lids are here, painted top and bottom.

That looks great Dan, just a quick note, you had mentioned in an email about house paint on the car, just wanted to clarify, I took that car to bare metal, what you thought was house paint was actually 901 grey Polyprimer. That was the stuff Aaron and i got higher than a kite shooting in the garage that time. It went on really thick for some reason. As thick as it was, I can see how you thought it was house paint. Its used to fill sand scratches and stuff. It was about a year old and I think there is a shelf life on it. I just went and picked up another gallon of it yesterday in white for the Chalon. The guy told me I need to use it within 6 months. That is a nice color and it looks like it is turning out very nice.

wow..that is ridiculous progress..here i am for 2 years with my car..and am just starting the main body work
Well, things around my place got rather busy the last month. I didn't actually even get to touch the 914 for about 4 weeks. Buuuuuut, this weekend I put in some 10 hours on the little guy. I went from having no engine to a running 2.7S engine. I plan on painting the fender this week. No flares anymore. I can't seem to get a hold of them so screw it. I have until August 27th if Michelle and I want to take this one to Whistler this year.

Just running web 40's right now. New linkage from PMO (they rock). Also, I am running the "new" oil tank from GPR that is aluminum welded sheets. VERY light, holds about 1 1/2 qts more oil than the stock tank. VERY good fit and quality. Dave from GPR said he is still working out the manufacturing detials. So they are not avaible yet. But I got one! Fired the engine and heat cycled it just today. Sounds great, very even cranking, oil fed chain tensioners ect. Fired right off and even clean. Engine has been sitting in a 77 911 for 4-5 years not run. I pulled plugs and turned it over until I got oil pressure, then plugged everything in. Wouldn't start, not even a fart or pop. Cranked on it, checked things, no spark. Wife comes out and says I probably got some wires hooked up wrong. I tell her I am busy, check some wires (Dam, I hate it when she is right!) and VROOM! Fired right off. . Since I am not flaring it, I am leaving it 4 lug for now. I grabbed some wheels/tires from Ian on the club here. So when I get those, I can drive it!

This car would have been done weeks ago. But things have just been crazy lately. I will see if I can get a full picture of the car up. It looks the same as the ones on the first page. Everything is painted really nice, except the fenders, which will hopefully be painted this week.
Looking forward to seeing this car done Dan....I like the color a lot Are you planning on keeping this one?

I used a rather slow reducer so the paint continued to flow for a few hours. Made the metalic even out really nice, most of the orange peel is gone too. I love the color! I bought a bunch of SS hardware to put the doors and lids back on with. The SS bolt heads should look cool against the Porsche Stone Grey.

Sell it, bail yourself out, and do another one...

After yesterday, I am really re-thinking letting this one go. It is just turning out so nice and these things are such a PITA to build. I duno, I'll just keep putting it together and see what happens.

I put some lids and doors on last night. Using the SS bolts looks just awesome! Still a ton more to do, but sure is turning out pretty!
Attached image(s)
I hide nothing when I build these things. Rather, I tell it like I see it. Notice the little "bumped" area under the rear tailight. I didn't know about it until I removed the bumper after I got the car home. So it didn't affect the bumper mounting or even tailight sealing. I didn't touch it since when you put the bumper and tailight back in, you don't even know it's there. I still have to put the bumpers/trim and lights on. Then I can move to the inside.

Front end all squared away! Yah! I still need to get the grills on, but notice I grabbed a set of Pilot driving lights from CAMP. Wow! Those things rock! Nice kit Craig, bolts right up.
Attached image(s)
Also on this is the complete CAMP Euro front light kit with lenses as well as the rear trunk shock kit. Both are cool things to have on a 914. I also grabbed a new carpet kit from CAMP. It is a really nice grey loop pile which will look very nice with the grey paint and grey cloth seats. Pics are sort of dark, sorry. Oh, I still need to paint under the wheel wells. You can still see some green under there.
Attached image(s)
I have been using SS hardware in a lot of places when putting parts back on. Trunks, doors, latches, side sills ect. Funny part is I haven't even driven the car yet, but started it and let it heat cycle a couple of times in the driveway. Never smokes and fires right off. I have everything but the throttle linkage to the pedal cluster hooked up before I can drive it.
So I am thinking I will leave the roll bar vinyl off and side mirrors off. That way they buyer can put those on if they want or whatever mirrors they want to.

Dan, my dad was diagnosed with the same. Very aggressive, the doctors said. Maybe 6-8 months. Longest on record - 17 months. Guess what... That was 35 months ago! Unfortunately, things are beginning to take their toll, and I don't think my dad will get to see the finished project here. Right now, I am tryiing to finish the Masters, get the ordination, and the Master Mason done.
I am looking at the Seal Grey for mine, maybe just a tad darker...
going the Raby route, and leather/suede. The idea is - what would Dr. Porsche do if he built a 914 today?
My prayers are with you and your family.
david
sorry to hear about your dad.
it's been ten years since i lost my mom to cancer. [ it doesnt seem like it though] i'm sure you know to make every moment the fullest with the time you have with him. make some great memories, the fun and positive the better.
Thanks guys, no worries though. Every day he is around is a bonus for us.
Onto the car! It's done! Well, just a couple little things to sort out, but I drove it last night for the first time since it was a 4cyl.
HOLY MOTHER OF TORQUE LORDS!
2.7's with carbs ROCK!

the car turned out very nice dan. no more macco for you . no doubt craig is fielding offers.
k
I took these just this morning before I left for work. This 914 was a good collection of parts from 914club members. Oh, I F'd up, the front euro kit was Martin Baker, not a CAMP kit, but here is the list:
Front euro lights - Martin Baker
BulkHead Mount - maddog (I like his the best)
Carpet kit - CAMP
Rear trunk shock kit - CAMP
Dashes - Evil one
Pilot light kit - CAMP
Sail panel vinyl(Not installed) - CAMP
914-6 bell crank - Root Werks
Oil tank - GPR
So thanks to everyone on that list who make great parts for 914's! We rule! If I missed anyone, I appologize.
So this one will be heading down to CAMP hopefully next week. Kevin, I'll PM you to set it up.
About the only things left to do are install the breather lines and air filter. Craig will be putting the interior together.
Oh, the turn signals don't work. Flashers do, but signals don't. Wierd, gotta get that one sorted as well. Fun car, VERY quick and VERY tight. If I remember correctly, Scott did well at WCC05 in AX with this car. It is certainly set up well!

Wow Dan, that really looks good. I wish I had the money to buy it back. The car did handle very well on the track at the WCC. Not one little bit of sliding and stayed pretty flat in all the turns. It just lacked the power you have added. The tires that were on it I know made a huge difference but the sway bars, springs and shocks were all working well too. Here is a picture of it in the final turn at Willow, many cars lost it and spun in this turn including Otto's car.
Attached thumbnail(s)
i won't have to baby this one due to tire restraints.
k
Thanks for that picture Scott! Yeah baby! That's what I am talking about. A car that did exceptionally well at the track now sports a 2.7S engine. Right on!
The only thing that has changed are the tires. I did sell them to DHunt (Tires/wheels) because at the time, I had flares on the way, which never came, still not here and will probably never get here. So I had to scramble for another set of wheels/tires. Had a set of fuchs, put new tires on those. This car has a fuch as a spare even. Tires are not R compound, but they are nice sticky street tires. They are so new in fact, in one of the above pictures, you can see part of the tire sticker still on the tire.

Car underwent a little more work. Put on a set of tuned headers (no heaters), new exhaust studs, re-sealed the rear window, installed the Dr. Evil re-covered dashes, installed a 911 numbered combo Gauge and new VDO Fuel gauge as well. The carbs are not the best for this engine, but it still screams. Still working on possibly getting this one down to CAMP or just selling it. Also has blacked out trim and sail panel vinyl installed.
My Dad passed away on 8-14-2005. I will use this money to finish his home projects and then Mom wants to sell the house. She said she can't stay in it. My older brother moved back in with her while still paying on a lease for a rental. So it is costing us "kids" bucks. But once we can get a few things sqaured away, Mom will sell and things will be a little better.
I'm so sorry to hear for you and your family's loss... I hope you are alright.
sorry to hear about your dad dan. it was a good thing you left the cruise when you did. see you friday.
k
Thanks guys, it was pretty rough, but all of his family was there when he passed away at home. He was diagnossed with Cancer on July 20th, so not even a month of knowing he had cancer to passing away. It was really fast.
Mom promises she will pay us back for helping out. I don't think my brothers and I really care if she does or not, but I know she will once the house sells.
Sent you a PM.
Sorry to hear about your Dad Dan. I went through this recently also so I have a clue. It'll get better. A small thing considering the circumstances, but if you could use a shred of good news, the valve tick is healing itself slowly and the carbs are finally sorted. The car rocks! Eager to see your next creation.
Randy
Cool! Still one of my favorite 914, L20E rocks!
I worked things out with Criag at CAMP. Just got to get my six down to him. Kevin, oh Kevin, you out there?
Dan
I'm sorry to hear about your dad. Times like this make you appreciate family and kind of underscores what is important. You will always miss him but, the memories get sweeter with time. Loosing your father really drives home how important it is to make memories with your kids. See you in Canada.
Dave
Dan,
Sorry to hear about your Dad!
I'm at a loss for words.
Just remember that his memories and well wishes will always be with you and your family.
Best of luck.
Eddie
Thanks Dave and Eddie for the thoughts. And yes Dave, you will see Michelle and I at Whistler, we will be taking her 944 since the 914 is being delivered to CAMP today.
I don't want this to turn into a thread about my dad, and I really do appreciate all the kind words and even PM's I have recieved. It is why I am selling this six. Otherwise, I would have kept this one. It's sort of a story:
Just a couple of months ago, my father was just finishing up a 3 car garage and had just dug into other home projects as well that required permits, inspections and of course, money. He walked into the hospital to have a tumor removed from his stomach on July 20th. They didn't remove the tumor and told him he had a couple of months at best(Cancer). This was of course a complete shock. They tried a few things, but he lost strength so quickly Chemo was not an option after only a few days. We took him home on August 9th when Doctors said he was down to weeks now instead of months and he passed away on August 14th. I was with my Dad 24x7 from the 9th until he passed away. Yeah, it was hard, really hard.
Which leaves all these projects he didn't hardly even get a chance to explain to me what was left still on the table. With time limits no less because of the permits and such. So money from this will go to finish up those projects in a timely manner for Mom.
Hey Dan, us guys are pretty good with saws, hammers and nails. Lets do some buildin and BBQin. I for one would like to lend a hand. I know other guys a step up too.
Dave
Dan,
I feel for you buddy! Fathers can't be replaced.
We are lucky ... at least we can look forward to being great fathers (and great friends) to our children.
Go give your kid a great big hug!
Let us know if we can help out your family in any way. A 914club work day at the Root house would be a great tribute!
Eddie
hey Dan just start a thread with what needs to be done. im sure we could help, lots of people here with lots of skills.
this isn't just talk form me i'll back it with sweat.
Dan, I am sorry to hear about your loss, as you know, I lost my father on the 9th so I know what you are going through. Excellent job on the car, I hope it brings you enough to finish your fathers projects. Stay by your mom and help her all you can, if my mom was still around, that is what I would do. They never stay long enough. I will miss both of my parents for the rest of my life as I am sure you will miss yours. If I were closer, I would come help you but instead, I will just have to give you support from here.
Sorry about your father, Dan.

Dan and Scott,
I am very sorry to hear about both of your losses. I wish you both a healthy greaving. If there is anything that I can do, just PM me.

Gotta love this place.
I wanted to extend a special thanks to Craig at CAMP914 and Kevin(rodyguy) for driving my six down to Craig yesterday. Craig is a very honest upstanding guy. I worked a deal with him that should give me enough $$$ to finish up most of what Dad left behind and even keep in a 914! Thanks Craig! The Marathon Blue one is now mine.
Only question is, can I get it before the big Whislter trip tomorrow morning or will Michelle and I be sporting her 944?
To the local's who offered help, thanks guys, but no worries now. If I need help, I will post a seperate thread.

My new 914 will be this one.
Again, I can't say enough how much I appreciate Craig working a deal with me on this. He kept me in a 914 and took my six still with a few little things to be sorted out. He knows I just don't have the time right now for that sort of project.
Someone will wind up with a very fun car.
