I converted my '73 to a six but I have what I think is the original engine. Can someone tell me how I find out if the 2.0 engine I have is the one that came with the car originally? Do I have to get a COA from Porsche?
And, where is the serial number on a GA engine?

You can order a COA directly from Porsche. They can usually confirm over email or telephone if the engine # matches up to the serial # of the vehicle provided while the certificate is in process. Reach out to Sara, her contact info is bleow.

Is the number I provided the actual serial number for the engine? Or is it a part number?

That is the engine serial number - unique to your car.

From I have been hearing Porsche will no longer put the engine number on the COA unless you give them engine number that matches their records. Don't know about over the phone though.

Cairo is correct in that it is indeed your unique engine number. It is also in the range of a '73 2.0 car as previously noted by Simonjb.

If it is the original I suppose I will just store the engine.

If you still have the original owner's manual, have a look at the delivery sheet right before the maintenance section. Some dealers would right down the engine serial number along with the car's VIN.

They required me to email a pic of the GA# for my 73 2L to put it as a 914-2.0 on my COA at all, & that was back in 2009.
They said it was because there are so many 2L conversions, that they want to keep correct for those of us who have actual factory 2L 4's.

Pics were not requested for my COA either, just the GA #on the COA order form was sufficient.

I reached out to Sara at PCNA and she got back to me in 5 minutes to tell me that Yes the engine is the original. I guess I am keeping it.
