Is there anyway to do this w/o the special tool? Do you need a special tool to install it as well?

The synchro rings themselves need no special tool - except for a GOOD set of c-clip pliers.

But if you are talking about removing the dog teeth from the gear - that's a different story. I've done it on 1st gear without any special tools, but any other gear is near impossible and probably requires the special porsche tool.

IF you are replacing the dogteeth (why else would you remove it from the gear?) you do not need the special tool. I was able to cut/grind my 2nd gear dogteeth almost all the way off without touching the gear. Then it was just a matter of using a chisle (sp?) and hammer to get it the rest of the way off.

To install the new one, I just used a block of wood and a 3 pound hammer to bang it on. JUst make sure it goes on evenly and fully.

Yes if I wasn't clear I am replacing the dogteeth. Cutting sounds good but I dont have access to a cutoff wheel at this time.
