Having trouble timing with dual idf 40 webers . Using a bosch 009 . What's the best Procedure?
I only know of one way to time any vehicle. Hook up light, start engine, set timing, lock in place. Tell us just what "trouble" your having? How are you doing it? Details, man. Details!
set the dwell with a dwell meter to 50 then warm up the engine, and rev to 3500 and set the timing with a timing light to the red mark on the back of the fan and make sure it shows up in the v notch. Red mark is just to the right of the big thick reinforcement.
Get rid of the 009 and it will run better
I've been running an 009 with dual EMPIs for over 5 years now.
No complaints, the car runs AWESOME!!
Increase the idle speed using just one of the idle speed adj screws. A higher, consistent, stable idle leaving both hands free to set/confirm your timing.
An 009 distributor was designed for a static speed industrial motor based on the type IV. It doesn't have the proper advance curve for a car engine. You are better off running a 123, or even the stock distributor for a 1.8L L-Jet engine. Both will work better than the 009.
also there are cheaper options than the 123
they may not necessarily be better, but definitely cheaper.
so there are actually 2 different 1.8 distributors
(2 different part numbers)
I do not have proof, but was led to believe that one had a slightly better advance curve than the other.
I can't remember which.... but its buried in this site somewhere...
the 1.8 (as mentioned above) is a better option than the 009
additionally there is the bosch 050 distributor
these were very popular with VW guys at one time
these have a decent advance curb for carbs
they are no longer produced, but are sometimes found used and are more affordable than the 123
I've always used the 050 for the last 20 years on carb cars... I've put them on about 4 cars.
I'm still pondering what distributor to use for my carbs. I've used 009s before and didn't like them because of the flat spot. Back in the 80s when I rebuilt the bottom of my 2.0L to convert to carbs, I bought a 050. As yet, that dizzy has never been used because I never finished the engine (heads are out for rebuild now). Now I'm thinking I would like vacuum advance so have been looking at the SVDA034 distributors but also wondering how the stock would run. A 123 would be awesome, but my pockets aren't that deep.
