914World.com _ 914World Garage _ How would you know re:valves

The old girl's been running kind of rough. How would I know if the valves were getting burned? I was very careful when I adjusted valves, but it was my first time. About to check them again, having driven over 3K miles since.

Bruce, After 3000 mi, it's not uncommon for the valves to tighten a bit. I adjust mine at 2000 mi., or before and after a long trip. Valves are the key to motor longevity. Loss of power and rough idle is a sign of improper valve clearance, but do a complete check of the ignition system at the same time. Valves, plugs, dwell, timing, and fuel system should be set also! everything must be in sync.
