I missed the last one, so this will be my 914 adventure for the year. I need some warm weather to get the fuel tank and sway bar installation back on track. piratenanner.gif

Had a blast last year. Can't wait. If you golf bring your clubs, you can get 18 in on Saturday afternoon.

Posted by: ClayPerrine Mar 12 2018, 06:27 PM

Betty and I will definitely be there.

Already have vacation scheduled for it.

Donna and I look forward to this event every year. This is always a well organized and very well run event. The German town and winding mountain roads are perfect our cars. In the evening, everything is within walking distance and the German food and beer are a great way to end the day.

We have a tremendous number of great vendors that support this event. I hope that getting to see their products on display at the event helps people make up their minds to buy an item or two.

However, many of us like to do the work on our cars ourselves so sometimes it might be a real learning experience to see the installation process on an actual car.
I am looking for ideas for installing certain items or parts provided by our supporters that could be done at the event and allow everyone to observe.

A few I came up with:
Replace Sail Vinyl
Clutch cable replacement of all pated from pedal to end of cable
CV joint replacement
New front or rear rotors
Shifting bushing replacement

Just looking for a few sound ideas that I could take to our supporters. I sure that a switch out of your engine for a Raby or 6 might be at the top of the list but kind of an impossible sell and difficult to do in a non-shop environment.

Give me some of your suggestions.

Let me know at Route 66 if you plan to drive Tail of the Dragon (about 100 miles north of Helen). I'll bring a map I have of the area showing other nice driving roads in that area, some nicer and less crowded than the Dragon.

OK.. I am going to bump this thread because I have to tell y'all about the dream I just had. I have been pushing really hard on my car to get it up and running for the trip, so maybe that affected the dream.

Betty and I were at the hotel in Helen, GA trying to pack the cars to come home from Okteenerfest, but we are encountering a bit of resistance. Bob Saville and Bill Dunster are dressed in Pink Tutus, including pink tights. Above the waist they are dressed in smoking jackets which are smoking more than the cigars in their mouths. They are throwing already cooked steaks (medium rare) at us. Nadine is in a black full formal floor length dress, including the elbow length black gloves, yelling at them to get out of the way.

OK. I agree. I have WEIRD dreams. But it is about 914s and Okteenerfest so I had to share it.

Stephen, calling you a world class artist doesn't do you or your work justice.

In your latest tour de force, your depiction of Bob and Bill speaks of your ability to convey feeling through gesture and expression, a la Rembrandt. The gentle, ethereal smoke wafting from their 'smoking' jackets demonstrates your supreme mastery of the depiction of light, only hinted at in works by J. M. W. Turner or Delacroix. The... whatever it is... peeking out... immediately calls to mind the surrealism of Dali or even the palette of Van Gogh (during his 'Pink' phase of course). And those floating steaks - they just revel in the thought provoking artistry of Magritte. Finally; there is your piece de resistance - the pink tutu gracing Bill's form. It just shouts of Toulouse-Latrec's wondrous ballet themed masterpieces.

I bow to your artistry. I salute your mastery of the artsy-fartsy stuff. You Sir - are an Artistic God Among Men!

I was thinking the floating steaks were more Dali-esque and the whatever peeking out was more of a Ron Jeremy influence during his pink phase.... in theory anyway... blink.gif

The text should read: What made you say "Oh, I gotta go to this event"?
I think the quotation mark somehow caused the rest of the text to not be shown.
I have added it back... let's see how long it stays.

I am really excited to start off a new feature for Okteenerfest. With the help of our sponsors, we will be holding tech sessions covering various repairs and installation of parts. The best part is that a lucky attendee actually gets the parts installed on their car.

Kicking this off with a great offer from http://www.tarett.com/. If you ever wanted to add some adjustability to your front suspensions, a set of adjustable drop links is the place to start.
Attached Image

Because this will be a tech session you will need to sign up in order to be eligible for the install. In addition to the lucky winner Tarett is providing all attendees a 25% discount on these links. This offer will be limited to people who commit to purchasing while at Okteenerfest so you will save shipping as well!

Great product. I just added them to my car.

My wife and I are planing to attend but she can't ride in my car for very long due to a hip injury. I have a trailer I can use but last year there was a concern about parking one. Is there a place to park a trailer in the area?
She needs to ride in a chair type seat. Her Yukon would be comfortable for the trip.

Hi Brian,
yes, we will have a designated area for trailer parking as we did last year.
There is NO trailer parking at the hotel, but it's just down the road in an open parking lot that we are contracting with. We parked our trailer there last year, as did about 6 others.

Some additional great news! http://www.pmbperformance.com/teener.html and https://www.porterfield-brakes.com/ are teaming up to bring you a tech session on how to adjust the rear brakes. Super mechanic Clay Perrine will walk you through the process of changing your rear pads and adjusting them properly.

Attached Image

PMBs classic write up of the process will be distributed to everyone that attends. Porterfield is providing some of their most awesome https://www.porterfield-brakes.com/product_info.php?productID=2665 for the demo! Porterfield’s R4 Carbon Kevlar brake pad provides even high friction levels across a broad temperature range while allowing rotor life to be extended to the maximum.

Oh and as an added bonus for someone that signs up, one person will be selected to have the Porterfield’s R4s installed on their car!

You have Fred Flintstone brakes?

Going to try to set up a discount deal for the R4s as they are some of the best pads I have ever used.

I know the standard 914 brakes are good but if you have any questions Eric at PMB is the answer.

The Helendorf is the Host Hotel where all activities will be held, including Registration, Saturday evening Banquet, door prizes will be displayed, Tech sessions, and all kinds of socializing will be had.

MOST people will be staying there...but we do understand, it is a bit pricey...but so is everything in Helen. We're going this weekend to scout out the Friday drive and hotels are crazy expensive...

Just remember, what happens at Okteenerfest, stays at Okteenerfest. Unless it is really good then it gets documented and widely distributed.

Well slowly but surely I am getting the sponsorship requests out.

First I would Like to thank Mark Taylor at Stoddard for being an event sponsor last year and returning again this year. Mark is actually going to try to make the event this year and bring his 914.

Attached Image

This speaks volumes about Stoddard's support of the 914 and we sent them a small thank you.

Also would like to thank Porsche USA for helping out again. Mark Harston is going to also send information on the current parts Porsche still stocks for vintage cars!

I know I went through 3 cheap ignition switches and the pain to install them before getting a factory one from Porsche and never had an issue with it!

Lake Speed with Driving Racing Oil will be sending more products this year and offering some oil analysis services.

I hold no illusions about it, she definitely will. The six is only 110HP, no sway bars, old hard tires, and a tail shifter. Her 4 has about 120HP, its lighter, has sway bars and 33 years of suspension development, low profile tires, a side shifter, and the better driver too.

Made tons of upgrades to my car for last year which allowed me to keep her in view about 30 seconds longer than the year before. Made even more upgrades this year and a new engine so I expect I will get another 30 seconds!

Sometimes even though it is a lot of work, I get to do some of cool things for this event. This is one of those cool things. While the “stuff” at the event is really fantastic, we are trying to get a bit more “tech” information worked into the event. I think it is pretty awesome that I get to announce that people attending Okteenerfest 2018 will have access to some people that really know their 914 and Porsche stuff.

Of course we know that we will have the chance to talk with Jake Raby at Air Cooled Heaven during lunch. But as a huge bonus to that, Charles Navarro of LN Engineering & Bilt Racing Service and the Type 4 Store will be attending. Charles and Jake will be available to share their vast wealth of knowledge.

I think you would be hard pressed to come up with a 914 or other Porsche engine question that these guys would not know the answer to!

Charles will be bringing something that I have never actually seen. Nickies. While most of us believe they are made out of Unobotainium, this is going to be a great opportunity to learn more about them!

Start prepping your questions!

Really looking forward to the rear brake adjustment tech session! After not winning the PMB calipers last year, I ponied up for a set and did the front brakes- calipers, Porterfield pads (properly bedded), and new hard and soft lines all from PMB, plus a 914Rubber master cylinder. I can actually lock the wheels up now, which I was never able to do before.

I know for a fact that using PMB parts has saved my ass many times. I am a reasonably proficient mechanic. But unless you build brakes every day this is one job that is best to let he professionals do. Eric suggested I go with the Porterfield R4s pads and that has been a fantastic recommendation.

Ditto on that for sure! Saved
my rear end last year, if not for the awesome stopping of the rebuilt brakes ans pads from Eric, and the extra
grip of the Bridgestone Potenza tires all 8.5" of tread on the ground, Peter(VYsoc) my copilot and I would have been hood ornaments on the front of a mack truck that lost his way and
appeared on a hairpin turn coming UP the mountain where no 18 wheeler should have been- taking up both lanes and the shoulder! no where to go- right was a cliff and 1000ft drop, left rock , straight was him,
stopped on a dime- so thank you Eric ans PMB performance!!!! - ask Clay and Betty, they were in front of me and i was trying to catch up- any way i digress- juat make sure you all have excellent brakes and pads for a drive in the mountains!!

Anyone passing through Birmingham along the way to Okteenerfest might want stop at Barbers Motorsports Museum Thursday morning at 10 a.m. with the DFW group. The Alabama Region PCA President, Darcy Schofill, has helped to arrange a special tour of the museum.

This is something Barbers has done for the Alabama Region PCA in the past and is a very special tour.

For me personally, it was an honor to meet someone that was so knowledgeable and had guided me through many of my mistakes while greatly shortening my learning curve. I will be redoing my wife’s Boxster engine at some point and it will be a Raby. You were such a great host in spite of the power failures and tough conditions.

See you in September.

Just a reminder - Our block of rooms at the Helendorf will be released on August 1, after that date, you will not be able to get a room at the Helendorf, which is the HQ Hotel for Okteenerfest 2018 and where everything is happening!!

And if you're thinking you can wait or possibly get a cheaper room at another hotel, most hotels are booked or are MUCH more expensive than what we have negotiated...

So REGISTER and GET YOUR ROOM NOW!!!

Thanks to David of 3M and Lucy from Meguiar's Inc., you will have everything you need provided to wash your car!

They will be providing wash buckets with grit guards and high quality cleaning products for your use. Also 3M is sending micro fiber towels for everyone!

That is a really awesome bit of support.

Also have to say thanks again to Matt at https://vintagecarleds.com/for helping out again!

They have provided a complete set of their 3500 LED lamps that will dramatically improve safety and visibility!

Vintage LEDs also sent me a new glass globe to replace one I broke. These are really good guys! Check out their site as you can get a 10 discount on you order!

Very Nice kit from these guys!

We reached (and surpassed) the 100 registrants mark a couple days ago so now for a bit of "Okteenerfest Trivia"

There are 21 registrants who currently own AND have owned ONLY one 914… with ownership beginning anywhere from original owner in 1970(!) to new owner in 2016.

Most 914s currently owned is 7 with most owned all together “I lost count” followed by 14.

There are about the same number of people attending whose “addiction” began before 1990 as after.

Attached Image

If that was not good enough they sent a few other items as well for each package:

-Replacement hood seal

-914 timing decal

-Marken Weltmeister decal

-914 original owner’s manual [two 1970s and a 1972], and

-914/4 chassis ID plate blank

Anyone need this?

MORE OKTEENERFEST TRIVIA piratenanner.gif

How many previous Okteenerfest events have been attended by this year's registrants? *

16 First time attendees
12 Have been to one event
10 Have attended two events
15 Have experienced three Okteenerfests
5 Have attended all but one Okteenerfest
8 Have been to all five Okteenerfest events cheer.gif

* These numbers only take into consideration a single participant per registration. Adding 50-75% to each figure would give a more accurate number since the majority of registrations contain two participants.

Booked my flights. My son Wes is coming too. Not flying back until Monday evening. Any suggestions on what do do with an extra day ? Going to be in rental car and looking fro a ride on the fun drives. Donating a pedal set as usual. Also plan to have some new tools for turbo tire rods and strut installation. Also working on a 914 key chain bottle opener.

I am sure you can find something to do with that extra day.

HI Clay, we are buried here with customer work and too many parts calls, I thought that the internet would allow me to keep the staff low, but the repair staff can never be too low. Hence I will be here answering the phones, and supervising the work, even on Sunday! Thank you for thinking of me.

Typical Pete, hold him to it::

I just booked a suite at the Hellendorf River Inn and conference center for two nights. September 14 and September 15. No rooms you say?! The after parties will be in the AA Suite! Bob was right, the place was booked. Just not all the way, all hotels hold back a couple of rooms for 'special guests' that are connected to Big Jim and his family.

You know the https://shop.914rubber.com/914-Inner-Door-Seal-Set-914IDS.htm guys are awesome? Well as part of our new tech sessions they are going to walk everyone through an install of their improved inner and outer door seals.

Keeping with our theme of getting you great stuff, if you need new door seals there will be a sign up to have the 914 Rubber guys install them on your car! That is an additional prize of roughly $200 in seals and installation!

The good Mr. Perry Kiehl of Iron Hill Restorations and the Exclusive source for the 914 Umbrella Cover has just let me know that he is providing an 914 Umbrella Cover for some lucky attendee!

These things are just amazing and hopefully Perry will have a few more to purchase at the event. I purchased one last year and it is one of the best thing you can use to protect your car from the weather.

These are in very high demand so this will be a real score for the lucky winner.

If its the same place as last year - find somewhere else - the "designated" location leaked damn sap all over my truck and trailer. I just saw a spot I missed yesterday...fair warning given.

I don't konw the address off hand and I'm not at my computer. Directions and a map will be provided to all that are registered via email (along with lots of other useful information) after we close registration (which is August 24).

Don't worry...we won't leave you hanging and wondering where to go!
FYI, I park our trailer there too - as do about 6 others - and will get there early afternoon on Thursday.

If you're planning to register, GET TO IT!! Registration closes August 24 at midnight.

Hello World,

I will be attending my first Okteenerfest. I am glad to see the registration numbers looking very strong for this year's event. Unfortunately I will be without a 914. My teener is a basketcase and not road worthy at this time. I have a (big) project car and it will be a while before I get it back on the road. However, still looking very much forward to the event and the inspiration from all your cars.

That said, I'll be driving up in my not so exciting Mitsubishi Outlander 4 cylinder. I am wondering if anyone who may be driving single on the Friday drive might allow me to sit co-pilot for the drive?

Thanks for your consideration.

Sean... There is almost always an empty seat available. If you haven't arranged it ahead of time, simply walk along the line of 914s as they are being staged for the drive and find one with an empty seat. Guarantee you won't be turned away biggrin.gif

According to the "driving" and "trailering" responses on the registrations, we are well on the way to over 70 914s piratenanner.gif

Betty and I are bringing two 914s, and that means we will have two empty passenger seats up for grabs.

Take you pick. But beware.... Betty is definitely not shy when it comes to plastering you up against the door. Just hang on to the arm rest (the one with reinforced mounts) and enjoy the ride! driving-girl.gif betty914.jpg

... I am wondering if anyone who may be driving single on the Friday drive might allow me to sit co-pilot for the drive?

Or if you need a nap and want a nice leisurely drive, go with Clay... hide.gif

Actually.. that is going to be somewhat true for this event. I am not going to push Elwood (factory six) the way I would Frody (Betty's /4) or Igor (the 4.0 six). Elwood has some small body issues I don't have time to fix, and really old, hard tires. With the other two, I will go 8 or 9 tenths on the street. With Elwood I probably won't exceed 7 tenths.

Maybe I will swap cars with Betty for one of the drives. biggrin.gif

Been doing a bit of math.

It amazes me that so many sponsors will contribute to this event. For those of you that attend it is important that we return the favor when we can.

In a rough estimate, our sponsors have committed over $10,300 worth of prizes and support for this event!

Who would have thought that such a unloved NARP could receive so much support.

So there are still a bunch of you that have gotten a hotel room but have not registered. PLEASE, if you booked a hotel room you need to register or give up your room. I've had two people tell me the hotel is booked and wanted to come, but won't register unless they can get in the Helendorf.

You know who you are...and so does everyone else... See the first post on this thread.

REGISTRATION CLOSES ON AUGUST 24. We have to give the caterer a number then AND PAY THEM, and order the shirts then. After August 24, we will not be taking any more registrations.

thank you!

We are going to be raffling off a print at Okteenerfest this year. Proceeds of the raffle go to Operation Motorsport, a Veteran led and operated charity whose purpose is "To use Motorsports opportunities to attract ill, injured and wounded Service Members and disabled Veterans and present them with educational and industry opportunities to aid in their retraining, recovery and rehabilitation."

Details of Operation Motorsport are here: https://operationmotorsport.org/

Our company http://www.naroescapemotorsports.com is privileged to be a partner with Operation Motorsport (OpMo), with 5% of all retail proceeds going to help fund their cause. We have seen first hand how integrating ill and injured service members into motorsports can help in their recovery. And while neither Nadine nor I served in any form of the military, we are certainly proud and humbled by what these men and women have been through to serve our country.

This past weekend, OpMo fielded a Mazda MX-5 in the Champcar 24 hour race at VIR. The Lead driver was Mazda pro factory driver Liam Dwyer - who himself is an injured military veteran (list his leg) and races in the Continental Challenge series for Mazda. Two other Honda Civics carried the OpMo liveries. The entire crews, and support staff for the three car effort was made up of military veteran beneficiaries of OpMo. Quite a scene!!

If you are on Facebook, go to the OpMo Facebook page and see the interview with Liam... https://www.facebook.com/OpsMotorsport/

Here is a picture of the print (its much clearer in person). The photo was taken by Diezel Lodder, CEO of Operation Motorsport, and is 36w x 24h printed on canvas.

While Ken will be bring some choice items to the Okteenerfest, check out http://etsy.com/shop/SubLevel27creative and place your order before Okteenerfest and use code OFEST18. Ken will bring your order and deliver it to you personally at Okteenerfest!

Registered. Had to wait a bit just to see if it would be possible with my wife's new job. We're just over 4 hours away now, so it would have been painful to miss it being this close. Cranked and drove the car yesterday for the first time since the 1400 mile move and it getting rained on more than a few times. Had to pull the plugs and let it air out a bit, but it started and ran surprisingly fine. Apparently my speedo quit working somewhere between Albuquerque and Alabama, but that's not so much of an issue. Really looking forward to seeing some people again and meeting a bunch of new folks.

Every year since we have held Okteenerfest, we've gotten more registrants than the previous year!! smilie_pokal.gif

And with less than two weeks to go, we are just a few people away from eclipsing last year!!

If you're planning to register, GET TO IT!! Registration closes August 24 at midnight.

Registered piratenanner.gif Sorry it took me so long. It was the essay portion of the registration that took so long lol-2.gif Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Essay for Registration:
"Oh, I gotta go to this event!"
After coming in 2015, I knew that I wanted to come back but it wasn't until I entered the 914world build-off challenge that I really had a plan for making it back. The idea was that with my schedule I needed something that was a hard deadline to push me forward in getting the car done. The build-off challenge deadline serendipitously happened to coincide with the event. What better way to help me prioritize my time working on the car than "Oh, I gotta go to this event" and I have the car completed to do so.

As time grew closer to leave for the event there was a hurricane bearing down on Georga and there was no way of knowing what it would look like until I was halfway there. With more things needed to be put back on the car for the deadline, I decided that I could buy my self an extra few days, if I diverted, and went to Red Rocks in Colorado instead. I did get the car back on the road and running great for the deadline, but I literally almost killed myself to do it. (Ask me over beers when I get there)
Once I got to Red Rocks I did not even get to drive my car more than a few miles. The problem was that we had used an unconventional carb set up that worked great at our altitude and would have worked great in Georgia, but did not do so well high in the Rocky mountains. The 914 community can be an awesome thing with everyone willing to help everyone else out. So collectively we thought, Let's get a screwdriver and see if we can't make it worse. It was at that time that I decided to go to a microsquirt fuel injection set up.

So I saved up my money and bought the parts but that was only part of the journey to get the car back on the road again. Let's just say that there is more than just some assembly required to get it in and all of the gremlins out. So at this point, we still need to pull the motor, replace the hall sensor to eliminate the sync loss error so that we can fine tune on the dyno and address an oil leak while the motor is out and by the way, it all has to be done in the next couple of weeks! Why? "Oh, I gotta go to this event"
While all of that is great for progress on the car. The real reason for me to come is the adventure of traveling across the entire country to share in the passion for the 914 with other enthusiasts and driving great roads in what with surely be a grand spectacle with over 100 cars on the great mountain roads of Colorado and Georgia. As I also am passionate about photography I look forward to capturing this great journey. So that one day, when I am old and feeble, and can no longer drive my beloved 914. I will be able to look back on those photos and hopefully recall fond memories and say,
"Oh! I Got To go, to this event"

Looking for a recommendation/ideas on where to get my oil changed once I get to Helen since I'm driving over 4K miles on the trip and already have 600 miles since last change. I'll bring the oil, filter and drain gasket so either need a place to do it myself or a shop I can trust. I plan to arrive in Helen on Thursday and depart on Sunday. TIA

Grab your filter leave the oil at home and win the case of Driven Racing Oil and your set. Pretty sure there will be ample support to do a parking lot oil change. For the Tech sessions we will be bringing floor jacks jack stands and such. So buy Steven Aki and Kelvin Knight a beer or two (they work cheap) and I and sure they can hook you up!

OK so this is pretty huge! Jerome of SPOKEWORKS https://www.spokeworksled.com/ is providing some awesome prizes for this event!

Initial post had some confusing information. Thanks for catching that Steven!

First, how about a set of his custom LED rear brake lights for your 914?

Attached Image

Includes 2 brake boards, attachment clips, and screws for installation. Replaces brake light bulb. These things will get the attention of any one behind you!

As is that is not enough he is also sending as set for those of you that have 69 to 89 911s!

Attached Image

These things are 3x brighter than standard bulbs!

So if you haven't signed up get it one! Sign up closes August 24th!

Ugh! Was getting so close to being ready! Solved so many big problems then little nit picking things like the throttle cable jammed and broke. Got my spare which was rusty. No reason to install that! Had to order a new one. Might as well replace the clutch cable while I am there.

Amazing how some small things can result in large set backs.

Posted by: db9146 Aug 23 2018, 02:28 PM

Mike, I know what you mean.

I started pulling my engine last night to address an alternator issue (-6). I'm going to be working hard to get it back in the car and the other items I'm finding along the way addressed in time.........wish me luck!

OK so I will take replacing the cables over an engine drop!

Got everything together and did about 100 miles no issues! But I seem to be getting really bad gas mileage. I think it is due to the really bad ass sound the engine makes when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed. Got to figure out a way to make that stop! evilgrin.gif

Posted by: lvnzdrm Aug 29 2018, 07:02 PM

Good news...transmission is back in, rear main seal done in 3 hours. Bad news front input shaft is leaking, found an intake leak, and an issue with the TPS. Pulled the the fuel system and trans back out, sent injectors out, ordered parts from AA (thanks George) and ready for the 3 day weekend to install, test and tune. That gives me a week to shake down and get any last minute items sorted out.

I'm hopefull all will fall inplace. Fingers crossed!

For all those registered for Okteenerfest... WELCOME!!!

Email updates will start coming to your inbox soon once we update the email service account, but I wanted to throw a few things out there for those of you that are here on this thread:

NEW FOR OKTEENERFEST 2018

We have a few new things going on this year that we haven't done in the past:

- TECH SESSIONS: The brainchild of our very own wizard of the door prizes Michael Blizzard, and organized by Stephen Aki and Kelvin Knight, we will be holding a series of Tech Sessions throughout the weekend, each hosted or supported by one of our sponsors. More info will follow, but this is something exciting that brings a new dimension to Okteenerfest! welder.gif

- Speaking of New Dimension, how about DYNO PULLS!!! Jake Raby has graciously offered the use of his dyno for 5 lucky registrants to "See what they got" during the Friday lunch break at Raby's Aircooled Technologies. If you want to have your car run on the dyno, there will be sign up tickets at registration where you will also guess what Horsepower your car will do! Then at lunch on Friday we will pull 5 names and those people will get a few Free Dyno pulls! We will have awards for: Most Horsepower, Least Horsepower and whoever guesses closest to the actual HP number! first.gif

- TECH QUIZ: Something we started last year and run by Clay and Betty Perrine, we will once again be doing the Tech Quiz during the Car Show. This year, we will have trophies for both Men AND Women, so ladies come on out and test your tech knowledge (or just guess...that's what I do!) confused24.gif

We will also have a Raffle for a really sweet Porsche 911 RSR canvas print, with all proceeds going to Operation Motorsport - a charity that helps ill and injured medically discharged military veterans integrate into motorsports activities to continue their rehabilitation. We'll have more info on that at Registration. Tickets will be $10. Print is 40" x 30".

OK... looking for some help, I spent the weekend sorting out the car, trans is all sealed up, vacuum leaks all sorted. I am still having an issue with power. It starts and runs, but the idle is low and very un responsive. I'm convinced it something simple. Any one here sorted out a 1.7 FI, I checked all grounds and connections in the harness. I am going to check the valves tomorrow evening, I was thinking maybe the FI triggers points might be acting up. also replaced the throttle cable is there an adjustment for wide open? Thinking maybe the Throttle Switch is set up correctly. I am available all the time, down to the wire to make this work, really want to make the trip in the 914.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to all input.

Ok so not the bet time to chase gremlins. But attached are a few documents to help.

First review the Trouble_shoot_D_Jet.pdf document and rule out as many as you can.

then look at the file DJetronic.pdf and check the information I have highlighted starting on page 7.

Next read through the file D_Jet_Man.pdf to research the ones you have questions about. The document is not laid out well but lots of good information.

Attached File  Trouble_shoot_D_Jet.pdf ( 260.47k ) Number of downloads: 49

Most important test is to verify fuel pressure is sufficient. Not sure what you have done to the car but in replacing the fuel filter once I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a pinched fuel line.

Keep us posted.

We are less than a week away!! At this point, everything is set in stone...maybe sandstone, but stone nonetheless!!

Trophies are done (kinda)
shirts are HOPEFULLY done (Steven?)
Meals are ordered.
Routes are finalized (assuming no hurricanes, house fires, gov't shut downs, etc.)
Huey actually started yesterday for the first time in months, so hopefully no issues (guess I should check)

Headed to Carolina Motorsports Park for a Drivers Ed - both driving (Papa Smurf) and selling stuff as a vendor. Busy last/upcoming few weeks!!

I will be sending out a final update next week to all the registrants about reminders of what/where/when.

See you all next Thursday night!

looks like others are having those last minute issues. if i get the car running i am going to trailer it. not enough time to make sure its all going to be fine. i have driven this car to 5 straight okteenerfests, been all the way to Tangerine racing in CT and all the way back down to SC, even south florida. It ahould be fine, hope to see you all in a frw days, the storm is forecast to be right off the coast of the carolinas by Thursday,
so we will see. might have to bug out wednesday, they are predicting an evac by tuesday or wednesday at latest and since i work at a navy hospital i will have to be tied in to what ever they say to do.

But it will be done in time for departure on Wednesday morning. piratenanner.gif

Got the trailer axle replaced. I was able to get the work done between rain showers, but when we drove to the trailer parts place, I got soaked trying to load the axle in a monsoon. We also had to take the long way home due to a wreck on the freeway close to the trailer parts place.

Also got the wheels back on Elwood, after Betty cleaned and waxed them. Got both cars vacuumed out, and I also tore apart our dryer and fixed it.

Looks like either a clutch trans issue or main bearings. Dropping trans this morning

Anyone got spare engine? Spun rear main bearing I think. So loose fly whell hit trans case.

Sorry to see this. Maybe the flywheel is loose? That’s a lot of radial travel!

agree.gif

A spun bearing would cause a dull thud in the engine when running. For the flywheel to hit the bell housing would take a lot of travel, and it would lock up due to the rod journals hitting something in the case.

Posted by: Mblizzard Sep 9 2018, 12:56 PM

Well it did not lock up but chunks of bearing in sump. Dropped it out a stripped it down. I have a rebuilt 1.7 of unknown quality but just can’t see me getting it in before Thursday and driving it. Looks like I will be having beer at the Hotel

Posted by: sholman5 Sep 9 2018, 03:47 PM

Hopefully hurricane Florence stays away from the East coast or we'll be drinking beer at home or in a hotel room.

Posted by: ClayPerrine Sep 9 2018, 04:12 PM

Florence is going to crash the party, at least according to the National Weather Service. The projected track is through Fayetville NC. Florence is going to be 500 miles wide. Helen is about 300 miles west of Fayetville NC.

Gonna be a rainy weekend.

if it keeps shifing more north as i expect it will due to the jet stream effect it may not be a factor at all. but if it does go more into SC/Georgia i might leave the 914 home and drive the boxster with the hard top,

.... na, probably not! i have an extra umbrella cover if anyone needs to use it.

btw, here is something i had not considered when doing a bumper back date- license plate location! i need a license place holder, if anyone has a really nice one i will buy it, if you can bring it to Helen.

Spent all weekend doing stuff with the car. Lots more to get done before Thursday.

I retired my umbrella cover after almost 20 years of abuse. How dare Perry make a product that only lasts two decades, half of that in the scorching sun, and several winters of ice and snow? It only outlasted two of my cars. I want a refund!!! hissyfit.gif

(Someday I'll get another one. They are cubic awesome.)

Posted by: Jake Raby Sep 9 2018, 09:26 PM

We are going into wet weather mode for the lunch on Friday, just to be safe. We have enough room indoors to set up for lunch, so no big deal. If this happens we will have to use the chassis dyno area for lunch, so we’d not be able to host the dyno portion of the event.

The show will go on, in a slightly modified manner...

Well I found a few things on the 72, faulty condenser and a restricted oil bath air cleaner, driving it to work today and will make the decision today to drive the 914. The Hurricane is making the decision even harder and harder. I don't mind a little adventure but chancing a breakdown in a hurricane with the wife might be the line. Watching the weather and will decide shortly.

Well the forecast keeps getting worse the more I check it. I’m going to have to make a decision tomorrow on getting to Asheville by Wednesday. Then heading into Helen early Thursday and riding it out after that. They haven’t called for bad winds in Helen and Friday and Saturday don’t look bad yet. This sucks having to guess about the storm.

FYI, for those that are trailering and did not see the link in the email I sent out last week (I'll send another couple updates this week). Here is the instructions/directions to the trailer parking.

http://okteenerfest.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/trailer-parking-instructions.pdf

When you park in the lot, if anyone asks, just say you are with the 914 group staying at the Helendorf, and that Lynn negotiated this with Bob Saville (it's all on the instructions).

I have received several inquiries regarding the weather situation this weekend.

While we appreciate that there is a major hurricane approaching, there is not much we can do about it. Everything is paid for with no refunds, so we can't really cancel or reschedule. However, from what I keep seeing, while we will probably get some rain, it may not impact us too severely. We can only wait and see what Big Blow Flo has in store for us.

I have sent out an email to all the registrants with basically this same information.

However, I did hear a rumor that Clay will be wearing a Speedo under his wet suit, so who would want to miss THAT? blink.gif

Posted by: bandjoey Sep 10 2018, 04:23 PM

Even with the storm we shouldn’t see any bad weather before Sunday.

Posted by: Jamie Sep 10 2018, 06:20 PM

It's amazing what we will suffer through just to get a T shirt! I'll probably have a 7 hr. drive in the rain, so I'm checking the condition of my wiper blades. I just hate to get Mistress wet, but it's happened before, and I'll just bail her out when we get back home! aktion035.gif

Posted by: lvnzdrm Sep 10 2018, 06:20 PM

Well I got things sorted but still not enough to complete a proper shake down. We are close to the coast and things are getting crazy here. I've secured all cars in the garage and brought in all out door items. The wifey and I will still be leaving Wednesday AM and plan on having a great adventure. I'm sorry I'll miss having my car there but can't wait to see everyone and check out their cars. If there are 2 empty seats we may be game for the drive. See everyone soon. Safe travels!!

Day 1: 435 miles Phoenix to El Paso. Smooth sailing until I got to El Paso and the freeway was closed. Finally go back on and there was a sign saying freeway closed all traffic take airport exit which luckily is where my hotel is. That means I’ll have to go through another detour in the morning when I depart for Dallas. Glad I didn’t try to make it to Dallas on Day 1.

We'll have the time in the morning if you want to look at it - if we leave too early we'll just run into rush hour traffic. If the weather doesn't cooperate you could even come to the house so we can look at it in the garage. For those that do not make it, we will certainly send you your T-Shirts - and probably your registration packets since I don't want them!

Again, sorry to hear those that can't make it. FYI, we will not be in Helen next year - in fact we have no clue what we're doing next year.... but we hope to see you in the future.

Meeting Clay, Betty and banjoey tomorrow AM for the remainder of the drive to Helen.

Day 3: 548 miles DFW to Livingston, AL. Kinda fixed the headlamp. Now I have 1 low beam but 2 hi beams. Maybe tomorrow I’ll fix the other low beam. Seems like the LED module is causing the intermittent short. It stopped blowing fuses when we unplugged it and now it half works (Matt if you see this before you leave home can you bring me a replacement? Muchas Gracias). Otherwise an uneventful drive for me but not for Bill. Hope he gets his electrical issues sorted and makes it to Helen. Thanks to Clay and Betty for being my wingman/woman today. I’ve met many nice people in the 8 years (tomorrow) of 914 ownership and they are right up there with the best.
3 day total is 1598 miles according to Google.

I'm out. Latest track has it passing right over my weekday house. Three hurricanes in three years! Between my house and other properties up here there's no way I can be gone. Not to mention driving back Sunday right into the teeth of the storm!

Maybe Phil can pick up my goodies and the drop links I bought?

Bill,

Hoping this doesn't hit you too hard !
Good Luck

Day 1: 435 miles Phoenix to El Paso. Smooth sailing until I got to El Paso and the freeway was closed. Finally go back on and there was a sign saying freeway closed all traffic take airport exit which luckily is where my hotel is. That means I’ll have to go through another detour in the morning when I depart for Dallas. Glad I didn’t try to make it to Dallas on Day 1.

Day 2: 615 miles El Paso to DFW. Another mostly uneventful drive. 20 miles from the motel a box the size of a washing machine flew out of the pickup in front of me and there was nowhere to go but through it. It was cardboard and other than scaring the shit out of me there doesn’t appear to be any car damage. Noticed my rt headlamp is out and both fuses are blown. With this projected rain coverage, I will most likely be driving in rain Sunday all the way from Helen to home in Lexington KY. Mistress is gonna' get wet! hissyfit.gif

It was not looking good for me making it again this year. Did not get to drive out but I booked a flight last night and will be making it to Atlanta in the afternoon. Since I can't drive my car, I rented something fun and will probably wait for Bruce Stone and his son to get in a c carpool up with me. See you tomorrow! piratenanner.gif

Glad you’re coming Matt! Question for the group. Are there any self serve car washes in Helen? I need to get the road kill off of Smokey. Spray detailer ain’t gonna do it! Was even pulling chicken feathers out of the oil cooler screen from following a death truck on the road. Thought it was snow flurrying. Haha

We will have a car wash area set up at the hotel (hose, towels, and I believe other cleaning products provided from one of our sponsors.)

Gonna be a busy place!

I'll be heading for Helen around noon or 1PM & will bring an extra umbrella cover
for someone in need. It will be great to see everyone again.

Got the oil changed and the parking brake unstuck. Still can't leave Montgomery until 4:00 this afternoon, so not gonna make it to Helen until Friday morning...I didn't even bother to book my hotel room in Helen for tonight. I'll try to make it past Atlanta this evening before it gets dark and roll out early Friday morning.

Day 4: I made it to Helen. Easy 336 mile day with a stop at Barber Motorsports Park. Only had a couple hours in the Vintage Museum which is a day short of how much time I would like to spend there. Started the day by locking the keys in the car but luckily the passenger window was cracked and Betty had a coat hanger. I love how cool my car runs in this part of the country. At least 25F cooler oil and CHT. Trip meter rolled past 914 for the second time about the time I crossed the Georgia state line. 4 day total is 1934 miles. Now to rest up for tomorrow’s fun drive. That’s it for me. I won’t bore you with details of the return trip unless something noteworthy happens. smilie_pokal.gif

Nice! I may have gotten up to 200 degrees, but mostly below that at 80mph.

Well,

Sara and I may not be able to make it this year after all! Still holding out hope for at least driving up for Saturday.

We do have a room reserved at the Helendorf for tonight and tomorrow that cannot be cancelled. Not sure if I could transfer it to someone but thought I'd throw it out there in case one of you are looking for a room.

I can’t even begin to express my gratitude to all of you that contributed to help fund my seat in the Race of Remeberance in Wales. I was so overwhelmed and in such shock of what was going on that I’m sure i didn’t do a good job saying how humbled and grateful I am.

All of you are truly family and are the reason we do this. All we want is for everyone to have a great time,...I’m guessing we are accomplishing that?

Thank you

Thank you

THANK YOU!!!!

I made it to Scottsdale at 6:30PM local today. I left Abilene early and was driving thru El Paso (my planned stop) at 10:30AM so I decided to keep on truckin'. 913 miles today and a 9-day total of 4285 miles. Time for a shower, beer and bed, I'll recap the trip tomorrow.

IN CASE YOU'RE AFRAID TO DRIVE ACROSS COUNTRY

2,704 miles later I'm home. Fort Worth to Okteenerfest to Atlanta to Savannah to Mobile to New Orleans to home. Was a blast.

Okteenerfest was more thank I expected. A super event.
Stopped into Automobile Atlanta. took the tour, and met Jeff...a great 914 guy too.
Fresh Stuffed Crab in Savannah and told my son to study harder.
Battleship Alabama in Mobile
Fortune tellers in New Orleans (I'll be rich one day - she didn't know I had a 914)
Home

Unusual electrical failure leaving town fixed by Mayo Performance and no more problems. THANKS for the quick service. Ready to go again!
