what do the relays under the passenger seat do and do I need them??? 2.0l carbs.
Getting ready for an "engman" treatment....sripping the interior and redoing the dash, WHILE I WAS AT IT...... blink.gif

Thats for the seat belt interlock thingy. It won't let you start your car unless the seat belt is done up. I imagine that its been bypassed. I'm not exactly sure how you bypass is though, so I can't say one way or the other as to if you'll still need the relay.

It's a bunch of crap than can be eliminated for sure. But... beware... some circuits pass through there... So if you rip it out, look for connections where more than one wire came together to the same terminal and splice those wires together.

its no a big thing, some wires already cut, i could leave it there, but if its not a big deal tell me what to connect and what I can get rid of.....else it will drive me crazy!!!! hate all the miscelaneous wires in these cars......

Look for connections where more than one wire connects to the same terminal. Cut and splice those wires together.

(I like to slip heat-shrink tubing far down the wire first, solder the wires, slip the heat-shrink back over the connection and shrink it up for a nice permanent connection.)

After the pass-throughs are connected, all the rest can go.

While being old and my memory failing.....you splice the two big yellow wires together and the rest of is rendered in-operable....kinda like me

I spliced the wires and pulled the relay...as I remember, when the relay was in the "Fastern Seat Belt" sign on the dash kept glowing or maybe it was just me. unsure.gif

Yes! The big yellow wire is the most important one to be spliced (ignition/starter/solenoid). Without that splice it won't crank! The rest isn't critical. But a couple other circuits tie together here that should be spliced (see previous post). Maybe they are grounds? Maybe DD will pitch in with more details...

I spliced the yellows together and my car still ran, so those are definately the two wires to cut and splice to bypass the board.

edit: I forgot, the door buzzers probably won't work after you cut it out (kinda like the seatbelt light won't)

You will also have problems with the interior light. The circuit from the door switches to the interior light runs thorugh the relay under the passenger seat. If you pull the relay, the interior light will not come on when the door is opened.

I completely stripped those circuits from both Betty's and my own 914. Neither car even has the "Fasten Seatbelt" Light in the dash either.

Big brother $hit. My opinion is we don't need that cr@p. If you are not smart enough to buckle your seat belt, then hopefully Darwin will get you before you manage to reproduce. ar15.gif
