Jeffery (914 7T3) pointed out factory parts from these fine Porsche people. These where so expensive from anybody that had a set left over just last year. $800 or so. What the market would bear. I remember when front targa seals where so expensive before George had a bunch made up by the factory some 8 years ago. The price of a good used
seal was one for $500.

Supply and demand.

FYI for all - Suncoast Porsche in FL has a good price parts website too, worth cross checking for price & availability, as well as closer for folks on the right half of the country.

Center caps for Fuchs have gotten out of hand. $190 is a good price. Most retailers are asking $80 each. 356 hood crests that can be used on the center caps are now in the $70 range.

George,

I would like to see the difference of the 40-year-old units from the stuff Porsche is selling now as new replacement. I know, you know, so it would be great if you could point out the difference. I have good eyes for that and my eyes go right there if not right.

Not sure it is a blessing or a curse in my life.

If anyone is really interested in a set of new Porsche ones I would be willing to do $175 a set plus actual shipping from Texas. I'm the parts manager at a Porsche dealership in San Antonio. Let me know.

The caps are TOTALLY different!! They are turned rather than stamped stainless, are taller, have split bottoms, and are dull as opposed to stainless shine

The ones we sell for 32.00 are also turned, but look much more like the old originals than than the "factory" Porsche reproductions

Porsche is trying, I guess, but since both Mark and I have them available, why try to reinvent the wheel?

Hi George,

If what you are showing as a new part box from Porsche on right is the replacement for your caps and Marks caps, you are right and they are not the same. If so we cannot trust parts from Porsche in less they are NOS. I do not have a problem with the new parts except if they are trying to be sold as what came on the cars back in the 70s. I get that your save box is the 70s control box.

Lots of work to get just the right part with the right finishes. Most people to not see it but 25% of the people do.

I am showing my cap stash from today and I sent my 76 car to Belgium with fresh Mark caps but had dicked with these caps for the last 8 years. I bought caps from ISP
as well and you can see there logo inside of those caps.

None of these are steel parts that where formed by I guess pressing. All where Aluminum that where machined for billet stock. IPS where different sizes and none of them would fit on the front of my 76. Back was tight but OK if you did not screw them up with a mallet.

The factory that made the caps back in the 70s must of trashed there tooling and no one wants to invest in it over for caps. You are right, too many players reinventing the wheel.

I guess there is a reason that some one with a show car would pay $800 for steel perfect ones.

Here are some more photo's of real and repo.
The real one is on the Porsche bag & the repo was purchased from Mark a long time ago. They sure look identical except the NOS stainless one looks better.

Actually Tom, your left one on the bag is a later more recent issue. An original is the left one above in Georges first post. The telltale is the wider seat rim.

Actually we have been making these for years also. The machined polished aluminum is actually a better product. Porsche did get that right. The old ones were not stainless (atleast the 2nd gen of them) In fact many of you had experienced what happens when these are left in place. Galvanic corrosion, this is why many were beat up being removed. Then the aluminum is polished it looks very close to the OEM ones. Thats why we made them that way.
