DISCLAIMER: I'm a hobbyist, not a professional, but...
Back when I was into making carbon fiber stuff, I hosted a "Composite Party" at my place.
http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=150212
20 + folks showed up and everyone made a simple carbon fiber part. It was a great time and I was thinking it'd be fun to do something like this with the 914 World folks.
So, how about a get together at my place in Petaluma where we could talk about fabrication and welding and attendees could make things?
- Maybe you'd like to learn about and bend up your own roll bar? (Andrew )
- Or do you need some sheet metal cut on the plasma table and bent up on the mag brake and want to give a go to doing it yourself?
- Are you trying to fabricate a part for rust repair and could use a tool I may have?
- You're bored - and watching others do stuff like this is better than sitting at home?
I'm sure I could persuade Martin to attend and he can demo un-f-ing-believable TIG welding and other fabrication techniques.
If nothing else, it'd be fun to meet up in person and "talk teeners"!
Anyway, let me know if you're interested, what you'd like to make or learn a bit more about and let's see what we can put together.
EDIT: Tools that will be available:
- Hydraulic bender w/ various dies.
- Hydraulic press
- Tubing notcher
- Roll bender w/various dies
- Plasma table
- 48" sheet metal brake
- bead roller
- shrinker / strecther
- English wheel
- fixturing table
- band saw (al and steel)
- cold saw
- TIG welder
- MIG welder
- 9" lathe
- Body working hammers/dollies
- Misc. hand tools
If you need material, I can coordinate getting it here.
Sheet metal and non DOM tube is available at Van Bebber Bros in Petaluma
DOM tube can be ordered from Tube Service in Milpitas, CA and they will deliver for $20.
Please PM me and we can schedule a time to talk about what you need.
Chris

why can't we do this on the EAST coast?
Posted by: jcd914 Mar 26 2018, 10:13 PM
I think it is a great idea, I love fabrication and welding.
There was a time that I did OK with a Mig and even a few of my Tig welds were acceptable.
Also Petaluma has one of my favorite breweries.
Now I just have to hope the date is workable.

I’m in. I just bought a big ol’ Miller TIG welder and would love some pointers. Also, my first “real job” out of college was managing Petaluma Transit. So it’d be fun hading back to to Petyerllama. I’m happy to contribute some funds to help get this going, too. What dates are you considering?

Yes, I have some tools...
, including a bender suitable for your roll bar - assuming you use 1.5" OD tube.
I'll edit the initial post with a list of tools that are available.

Geoff - Not set on dates. I figure we give folks plenty of runway as some may need to source material so maybe end of May or so?
I'm pretty flexible so let's see what works for most people and go from there.

Hmmm. Narrow chance at this point, but I'm trying to figure out if I can get to Petaluma over Memorial weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday. I already have a schedule conflict making it difficult, but I'll be watching this thread to see what might shake out.

Santa Rosa is closest at ~20 miles, then Oakland at about an hour away, depending on time/traffic.

That might be fun for the attendees to see. But more details, please. Do you just need to borrow a welder and you're going to do the install?
Assuming it's not raining, I can roll my build out of the shop to make room. Note that I don't have a lift so it's jack stands only.

The abm has a bolt on which kind of irks me. If I pull the motor anytime soon I may want to weld in a better set up.
Oh, and I don’t weld. If I tried, I’d walk out with 7 fingers, blind, and your neighbors cat would be on fire.

And remember, no one has to wait for this party - you can come up most any time if you need to use a machine/tool or two. Just contact me so I can plan.
It's always fun to meet new folks.

Cool, thanks! And you're going to be on the hook to bend up a roll hoop!
That said, we can't use my car to check fit as my roadster cage would be in the way.
Maybe we can convince someone to bring a car we can use...
Any volunteers? I promise we'll be careful...!

Sounds like a great way to meet a bunch of members at one time.

ps - if your friend with the sick welding technique is available, maybe we can install my McMark roll bar. It's tucked away.... somewhere in my garage

Hmmm, good thing I said "Target Date". I'm not married to that weekend and I totally spaced on the Historics and would like to attend, at least one of the days.
Plus, if we move the date, maybe we can talk Brent into traveling to CA twice in one year!

PartsHeaven can be done from 7AM to 9AM unless you want to stick around and bask in the glow of CWs.

I can skip parts Heaven and do the Historics Sundy, but other people may need their junk/CW fix.

I’ve got this on my calendar. I’m currently contemplating mods to my metal front bumper for a radiator intake. But I’ll likely begin working on that project prior to June 2nd. In any case, I’d like to stop by just to see your workshop, meet new folks and see old friends. Thanks for hosting this event!

OK, barring something totally unexpected, we are a GO for Saturday, June 2.
REQUEST:
- If you're planning to work on something specific, please check the first post and be sure I've captured you/it in the "Attendees/Project/Tools" section.
- If you need materials, either bring them with you or if you want to leverage our local steel supplier or Tube Services f(or DOM tube), PM me to coordinate.
Note: Tube Service will deliver to my shop for $20. I can pick up sheet metal or non-DOM, I just need to know what you need. Please don't wait til the last minute.
- If you're planning to attend and watch/learn/jump in and help/take pics, please check the "Attendees/Tips & Tricks" section to be sure I have you listed.
LUNCH:
There are a couple nearby places to get lunch and I'm sure we can enlist someone to make a food run. Please plan on covering the costs of your own food. I'll provide a case or two of water.
Looking forward to a fun day!

I talked with Al at PartsHeaven the other day. He told me the city wanted $10K to issue a street closure permit. Cost prohibitive to say the least. He's trying to work a deal to move the event onto the parking lot across the street to put it on private property and circumvent the permit requirement. He's still not sure it'll even happen this year.

Chris,
Looks full, but if there is any room, I would like to attend.
I can bring tools, if nothing else for show and tell.
Affordable Bender with 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75" dies.
Welders, notchers, anything else you might need multiples of.
Thanks,

Chris,
Looks full, but if there is any room, I would like to attend.
I can bring tools, if nothing else for show and tell.
Affordable Bender with 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75" dies.
Welders, notchers, anything else you might need multiples of.
Thanks,
Dan Dalen

Dan - I think there will be plenty of room so please feel free to attend. And we should be good on tools, assuming the roll bars are all planning to use 1.5" OD tube and 6" radius. If Andrew needs something else, please do bring the bender.
See you on the 2nd!

No need to bring anything, though I may ask for volunteer(s) to make the lunch run.

But sure, bring some! I'll supply water, sodas and wine.

Thanks Chris, as for those parts if there is someone up there this weekend that can use them, pass them onto them. I honestly don't see putting them to use. Just more parts to clutter my garage.

As I've been confirming with the attendees, it seems some of the planned work won't be happening. See the first post for details about what will be happening.
In all, we'll have plenty of room for the remaining activities to happen - even all at once! And Andrew's roll bar fab will be interesting for folks to watch/help with.
Plus, I can back fill with some needed design/fab work on my car, as well as with a customer art project that requires some plasma table use.
Or, maybe I'll just hold you all hostage until someone figures out how all this stuff connects!

If you find a metal place open can you grab some .125" sheet steel piece of like 2x2 ?
I now plan on going if I get out of the hospital today, feeling way better with all that fluid removed from lung cavity and itching to get some work done.
I have a plasma cutter at home however Chris has the CNC plasma cutter so much more accurate.
Chris, can that machine accept DXF file?

Welp 2 hours dicking with trailer wiring means we're leaving a bit later. A faulty Curt wiring harness converter means we had to bypass the box and make a couple parts runs. I'm going to leave most of my tools behind but take my helmet and gloves. My dad is with me and we have his bender and dies.
I have 40 ft of tubing and Mueller's plate we'll get something done tomorrow! Expect us there about 9:14. Still got to load the car on the trailer in the morning, get gas and put some air in the tires.

GREAT seeing/meeting everyone! It sure seemed like everyone enjoyed themselves.
The "most obviously enjoyed himself" award goes to Andrew!
Martin, my buddy and master fabricator showed up and helped guide Andrew through the process of bending up his main roll hoop and door bars.
I asked Andrew if he wanted to roll bend the top of the main hoop to match the targa bar. Andrew proved himself a slave to fashion (just like me!) by getting this silly grin on his face and saying "Yes, I WANT THAT!".
So with the smallest of help getting him started, Andrew roll bent the tube as the first step. Then Andrew, his dad Dan and Martin, knocked out the rest of the bends.
The hoop fits perfectly! Just look at the match to the targa bar curve! Great job, Andrew! No wonder you're so happy with that result.

Mike (Mueller) made an appearance too. So good to see him and his twin girls!
He brought with him a .dxf file for some suspension tower reinforcements for his Volvo.
I support modifications of any car ( ) so with a bit of plasma table we whipped out a pair of parts.
Took all of about 2 minutes.

Christopher (MotoTrooper) planned to use the English wheel to make a roof panel for his Lancia/Subaru project. Well, it turns out that I had 3 examples of roof panels for 33/34 Ford coupes that were practice pieces from the Lazze metal shaping course I took.
Would you believe they measure out so close to what Christopher needs that we opted to give these a trial fit!
So with 10 minutes of measuring, into his car they went!

Ha! Elliot, you're too kind.
Beyond the fun of meeting folks with the same interests, I just think sharing makes more sense than everyone having to buy all their own tools and equipment or having to pay for things that I/we can help them make themselves. Plus, I'm a big believer in karma so I happily confess, there is a little bit of selfish motivation in there, too...
As to yearly? I say more often! My shop is always open so if I can help any of you, let me know.
But seriously, if folks are interested, I'll take a look at getting another date on calendar later in the summer or fall.
