914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Refresh on the engine deck lid - tied to letters wanted to break out

Posted by: Mikey914 Apr 15 2018, 12:34 PM

So I did the engine deck lid letters but also the paint matched for the grill and under the grill. Was a pretty easy clean up that was worth the effort. Mine had what looked like wax under it. Also changed out the engine deck lid welting.

I will be also putting the early rain tray back on the car. More pics tomorrow.

The pin retainers are not generally reusable and require some patience to remove. I used 2 flat screwdrivers to remove these gently.

914 rubber is awesome but I need to point out the last word that sounds like a pretty painful procedure. laugh.gif

Mark,

Have you got a template to properly space the letters on the decklid?

The rubber push "retainer" that hold the grill down has a steel "one-way" ring embedded in it. You need to pinch the retainer at its base closest to the grill to break the steel ring - I use needlenose pliers. If you pinch it right, you can feel the steel ring break. Once it breaks, the retainer should come off fairly easily. In some cases, the steel is badly rusted and the rubber around it will break away. If this occurs, you'll be able see the steel ring that needs to be broken to remove the retainer.

PM me if you need further explanation.

I take a small pair of side cutters and just cut into the rubber thru the washer. Not reuseable but your done.

I did count out the opening on the factory one I had and will post up my notes shortly. Basically I centered the S and counted up complete openings (13 I think) and then went to the next pin location counting from the center over to define the row, then counting up the colum from the bottom to locate the pin position. Worked well.

I’m going to follow this post closely. However the letters I bought came without the retaining clips. Do we need to buy these at the local hardware store?

Sorry my fault.... It is sold seperately.

Got em, not sure where else you would find but you can check the local Ace, pretty sure the box stores will not have.

Just ordered from your site (together with an ADAC badge).
Ps: noticed your new website, and wondering why making a new site (I feel that most people prefer “smart” phone apps).

The "new" site has diagrams and is organized similar to the maintenance manual. We are also adding some items to help the DIY guys too.

Painfully slow, but hope to make the cut over in about 60 days

This was on the old site, and it's what I used for mine about a year ago. It's 169 mm from the start of one letter to the start of the next one

You can cross check as the S is centered on the grill pin that hold it on.
