914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Bit O/T a $300 supercharger

Posted by: Mark Henry Apr 19 2018, 08:33 AM

My buddy with a '53 VW splitty likes to play with different low buck engine combos, he has a 40hp T1 VW engine in it right now and just bought a supercharger for $300 (canadian) with free shipping from china.
A Judson supercharger kit is about $2K.

He needs to find a side draft carb and is wondering if he should mix some oil in the gas?
A judson has a bottle that you fill with marvel mystery oil for oiling the SC.

BTW he does have the original numbers 25hp engine, 0 to 100kph in a couple hours...downhill. biggrin.gif

He's copying this guys engine intake, but he'll have to make some changes to fit into a bug.

Of course there are many different superchargers. Most of them I am familiar with have oil internal to the supercharger. Somehow I just cant see much of a need for oil in the gas. I would think it would cause build up that would ultimately result in damage to the supercharger.

Neat little supercharger, my understanding is that the original application is as a smog pump for diesel trucks or something like that as well as some factory installs on small gas motors.

I'd say no to the oil.

Always wanted a supercharged 914 motor , however these seem too small even for a 1.8. I thought I read that they can be run up 18K rpm for a crank speed of 6K if doing a 3:1 ratio.

Added a super charger in the 80s to a 2.0.

Ran amazingly but always had problems controlling the heat build up. Of course this resulted in a Three-Mile Island syle melt down. blowup.gif

Looks like a typical British SU or Stromberg carb is used. They are readily available on ebay or British car sites like mgexp.com

I installed a custom turbo kit in a 1914 type1 motor for a bug I had, it had a harley davidson carburetor on it via draw-throu. That worked very well. If I remember correctly the main jet was fully adjustable needle type, but it's been about 20 years and I didn't build that kit....

I always wanted to put a small SC from an 80s thunderbird 2.3L into a Teener... still might someday

I want one of these for my Lawn Mower beerchug.gif

It must have an internal pump to circulate the oil through the bottle? Or is it a total loss system? If a recirc you may want to increase the bottle size ?

I had it in my hands, I didn't see any oil fittings. We're both guessing on it needing oil because a Judson needs it. I would imagine it has sealed bearings, might not need oil.

My buddy has several engines so meltdown isn't a biggy on a couple.
He retires in 2 weeks, so he needs something to smash.gif welder.gif

No problem, I saw he had a video on youtube with a car running it, looks like he might be looking into producing a bolt on kit.

For some reason I pictured a remote bottle? Lol. looks to be a simple sump with a splash bath. Pretty cool! biggrin.gif Roots type.

The SC from my mini cooper is small and could be used. It has no oil circ, there is 4.9oz in the nose and about 1 oz in the tail. Rebuilt it last night, that's how I know. I have a spare from the core engine I built.

How much $ to rebuild it?

that is a really nifty item. it really opens up some ideas, my first thought is a simple blow thru system, put a filter on the one side and blow thru your carbs. You could probably do 5 pounds before you need to do some timing.
I haven't done a thing at work today, I'm daydreaming of a place to use this!

On ebay is a kit to do a light rebuild that includes nose seal, inner and outer nose bearings, and two bottles of SC oil. Im at work or Id post a pic (no cell service for pics). The rest of the over haul would require a machine shop and my inspection showed no need for deeper teardown. I cant remember what the kit cost.

The Toyota unit has oil @ each end to lube the bearing ,Toyota call them a sealed unit but the oil can be changed,no rebuild kits for them however.
Most of these units make rather low boost,if overdriven they become what is known as a "hairdryer",even with interstage cooling they don't perform well if you exceed their design range/pumping ability.
The Eaton units used on many cars GM's,Merc's and others provide good performance if matched to the size of the engine and installed correctly, very cheap to buy used or even new.
I seem to remember they make around 4 differant capacity units the smallest being the BMW mini one up to what they fitted on the Mustangs.
Doc is correct about the Eaton blower, rebuild kits are relatively cheap as is the factory oil,but be aware of rotor and housing wear that cant be repaired.

The potential hidden wear was why I tore into mine. Looked great, just dirty. That sc oil smells nasty.

Maybe you could figure out a way to utilize a Weber DCOE sidedraft carb feeding the supercharger. Much easier than blowing through carbs that weren’t meant for that purpose.

SC oil for TBird

That green coupler piece was also included in my kit. The one possible plus of the mini SC is that the output is ducted to exit the rear rather than straight down. I am not sure, but it may turn the wrong way as I was considering this in the past. Or I might be thinking the MBZ one on their small Kompressor cars.
