what is the difference from the 914 to 911 front suspension?
why swap?

Posted by: Aaron Cox Jun 8 2005, 12:09 AM

slightly beefier torsion bars
vented brake options
5 lug wheels

mostly the bigger brakes and VENTED rotors

so the spindles are not the same? you cant swap the hubs and rotors?

negative. big negative.

914 rotors have the bearings built in
911's have hubs...bearings in the hubs....and the rotor bolts to the hub

thanx Aaron

aaron is correct...however, if you want to stay 4 lug and need or want vented rotors, there is a solution smile.gif

a lot of 914 owners opt for the 911 suspension just so that they can bolt on the 911 5 petal Fuchs which some people like more than the 4 bolt rims....

You can just buy the 911 strut and hubs so you can run the vented rotors and calipers. The A arms can stay 914 as they have a different spline pattern than the 911 ones.

or you can wait until the store makes some adapter hubs in a 5 bolt pattern.

Me, I have given up and bought the 911 stuff. dry.gif

ALSO mounting for brakes is a biggie, stock 914 is 3" spacing, 911 74 thru 89 is 3.5" spacing, that means many more options for brake upgrades like the 911 guys use!

slightly beefier torsion bars

I think only the splines on the ends of the torsion bars are different.

I think that you can get the same "stiffness" torsion bars with either 914 A-Arms or 911 A-Arms. (of course, when one goes to coilovers, it is a moot point)

close

STOCK 911 Bars - 18.9mm
STOCK 914 Bars - 17mm

so, i stand by my statement, 911 bars are slightly beefier (and noticable too)

Perhaps I should have stated it differently:

The same (largest) size torsion bars can be purchased for 911 and 914 A-Arms.

(The torsion bars are not interchangeable due to the different splines on the ends of the torsion bars)

*all* 914's (4 and 6) came with 17,9mm torsion bars.

"the" 911 has been in production for 40 years so before you say "the" 911 had 18,9mm bars, you need to be a little more specific about what year you're talking about...

ETKA doesn't show sizes for 911 bars, at least the years i looked at, but the only reference available to me right now shows that "many" 911's had 18,8mm bars. (even the Spec Book does not show torsion bar sizes...)

my understanding of t/bars is that dia. of the splines will be consistant on the bar and the shaft dia will very with the rating of the bar, stiffer thicker/ softer thinner.

JOHNMAN

yes, 21,22,23mm bars are available in BOTH 30 and 29 spline applications (911/914-6 and 411/412/914-4 respectively)

messix

yep, bigger DIA bars are heavier spring rates.
and the splined ends are the same size on all available torsion bars for porsches, only the spline count differs between models (as stated above)
