914World.com _ 914World Garage _ WCR 2019? Who, When, Where?

Posted by: Mikey914 Jun 10 2018, 11:59 PM

Yes, now that we have finished the 2018, it's time to start the conversation.
2019. We need some committed individuals to pass the torch onto for next year. The where, is most likely going to be on the individuals who step up, and the when, will also be a factor of other events that schedules aren't finalized on until end of the year.

Would like to see one in central or socal for a change of scenery.

...I'll do it. Little Rock, Arkansas. First weekend in June '19. biggrin.gif

PS: I want to give Steven a break... beerchug.gif

Beautiful Quincy in eastern WA.

Posted by: Andyrew Jun 11 2018, 07:47 AM

I was pretty sure the Socal guys had already spoken up about it for the 914's 50th anniversary.

Its their turn as well (Socal, Norcal, PNW, rinse and repeat)

I think 2020 should be Napa, Monterey, or Fort Brag area but thats just my opinion smile.gif

Posted by: ConeDodger Jun 11 2018, 08:15 AM

Yes, SoCal said they wanted it. Let’s see how they feel now. If they don’t, I’ll do Tahoe again... only with a party boat!

Mike. Leamon and Don put on a good show a few years back. hide.gif

Posted by: Mikey914 Jun 11 2018, 09:05 AM

There was some discussion about it going south, I'm just fine with that I'll go either way, just wanted to get the ball rolling, and people thinking. poke.gif

2020 should be a moving rally with a weekend in the middle somewhere. Personally I'd love to see Canada to San Diego, or vice versa. I'd make a special badge for all that complete on a run like that!

Posted by: don-6 Jun 11 2018, 09:25 AM

Mike, Leamon and I, have some big plans for 2020 to celibrate the 50th anniversary of the 914.
Details will be announced at a later date.
Mark, Matt and the guys from 914Rubber will also be on board.

Now back to the 2019 WCR discussion

That sounds awesome! The PCA do stuff like that in this area but not so grandiose.

IMHO, If ya'll want to do the next one in SoCal I'd recommend the place in Idylwilde that we stayed at for Rt66 2017. There are 3 primo drives from this location as well. If we get near any of the larger City's traffic it becomes an act of Herding Cat's. beerchug.gif

Posted by: 1adam12 Jun 11 2018, 10:22 AM

If SoCal is the plan and you make a swing route from the coast to the inland empire, I have a couple of stops and even factory tours to suggest. LA > Corona > Temecula > Escondido/San Diego.

A tour of the whole west coast would be awesome!

It would have to start up in the rainy cold parts and end up in the sun.
Otherwise it's just too depressing, people need something to look forward to.

I just mapped it out, 5 days of driving would get you from Vancouver to San Diego but that would be a lot of driving every day.

If you spread it out to a full week and make it 7 days of driving you can take the scenic routes down the coast.
And please, no cheap, crappy Travel Lodge accommodations!

On a trip like that, i would want to stay in nice places along the way.

I like the way your thinking Andy.

The 2019 location will be a function of who steps up.

Right now its looking like Tahoe as Rob is the only one that has commited to organize so far.

It's a fall back, but hoping we can get some Socal guys to organize.

And yes technically 69 is when the 914 was 1st sold, but, but 2020 gives us some time to fulky organize.

Did the full coastal run from Neah Bay to Point Loma in the -6 a couple of summers ago. Epic. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Still on the bucket list is the full run down the East Coast, Maine to Key West, hopefully next fall.

Posted by: Chris914n6 Jun 11 2018, 05:53 PM

If 2020 is going to be that epic, then here is my crazy idea....

2>1<2

Separate starts North & South for a day, meet in the middle for a day, head back N&S for a day. If you have the week off then you can go all in one way and drive the long ass way thru the 'other' twists on the way back home. For the rest of us we can do the 'halfway' trip and still get a full weekend of fun in.

If we drive the scenice route along the coast the full drive from Vancouver to San Diego is 2,730 miles.

So if i wanted to do the whole trip i would have to drive up to Vancouver, drive down to San Diego and then drive back up to the Bay Area.

That's 5,460 miles ...

We are planning a northern group heading south, and a southern group heading north.
We will meet in the middle for a big 914 event.
It will be a multiple day Treffen drive. People can do the whole event or hop in when they can. We want this to be inclusive for as many 914 owners as possible.
Now... back to the 2019 event planning

Don

Posted by: Mikey914 Jun 11 2018, 08:03 PM

For 2019 we still have options. It's been most gracious of Rob to step up as a back up. He's done this several times in the past. I was hoping fro some of the southern contingent to step in, but at least we have an out.

So, how long should we keep the decision up in the air as far as where?

A month sound good? I really want to get anyone that wants to help out the chance to do this.

That sure as hell sounds like 2 weeks!!
There has got to be a better more logical way of doing this. We would have to have 2 or 3 support trailers and 5-10ea of the standard consumable replacement parts(Possibly a good ploy for a couple of big house sponsors.. And we would definitely need the PCA involved for insurance alone with that many miles logged.

What if we broke it up differently and less extended?

1. Santa Barbara (Stop at Solvang, Pismo Beach, Big Sur)
2. Monterey (Stop at HPH in Redwood City, Drive through SF, Drive through Napa Valley and tour some wines)
3. Fort Bragg (drive through the redwoods/valley of the giants, Stop at Lost Coast brewing company, Maybe a lumber mill for photos)
4. Southern Oregon
5. Northern Oregon/south washington

THis would be ~ 300mile daily drives with stops all the way in between. Oregon people could fill in the oregon stops. This could be done either way but its much easier for people to make this long of a trip.

Andrew, there is nothing, NOTHING, in southwest WA. The drive from my house down the coast to Coos Bay, via Astoria, takes a FULL day. Off tourist season. Factor in motor homes and boat/travel trailers you're looking at 25mph when you manage to move. If you're lucky.

Agree, just made that trip. Don’t know who’s been to HPH in Redwood City but there is no parking and if there was you need a armed guard to watch are cars. Plus HPH has so much stuff everywhere I don’t think you could get 5 people inside his property.

Your on the right track Andrew, maybe start or end in Santa Barbara/Petaluma.

As far as 2020 goes, I think you might get more people to attend if everyone meets in the middle somewhere. It would be a lot more affordable time and money wise. You could plan separate and interesting routes for the southern and northern groups and everyone could meet in the middle and exchange experiences. Just $.02 biggrin.gif

2019

Andrew mentioned Fort Bragg which is just ten minutes up Hwy 1 from the town of Mendocino and has reasonably priced accommodations.

Positives:

- Stunningly beautiful coastal scenery
- Sea Level! Less overheating / altitude concerns
- Coastal Highways are fantastic in that area, lots of twisties south and north of the area
- Tons of hotels
- Good eats and drinks
- Lots of coastal parks and places for photo ops

Negatives:

- Can be busy, even mid-week during the summer. Roads may have lots RVs, etc., though certainly not as bad as Tahoe's traffic.
- Off the beaten path, some tweakers though it's not bad
- Likely to encounter fog/wind/cold

I think it would be an interesting alternative to Tahoe, though Tahoe has been good for the group too.

Shasta Lake is one of the locations being considered for the 2020 WCR.

I thought the roads and everything were great in Paso Robles/ San Simone. I wouldn't mind that area and Treffen North. I wouldn't be able to get routes dialed in but would be willing to help with other things.

If doing an event in Tahoe, I would suggest the Cal-Neva if they are reopened by then. We attended a MiniMeet there in 2011 and it worked out fine. They even provided a separate parking area for us.

Plus the place has a cool Frank Sinatra vibe...

As a former long time Temecula resident (74-96), Temecula would be a good spot, though it's sort of light on Hotels. Tons of great drives (Palms to Pines, Mt. Palomar, etc), maybe even take Hwy 395 down to Stone Brewing for a tour. Though I have to admit, traffic is a bitch down there now. Let me know what I can do to help, and hell, while I'm at it, Rob, if you need help for Tahoe, Col. Sanders is here to help you too! LOL

Posted by: Mikey914 Jun 16 2018, 08:47 AM

I would do what I can to help, probably more limited to behind the scenes stuff, but if we have someone step up to put it together there aer a few that will help.

You guys are sure making the WCR 2020 seem interesting and might be worth an east to west coast trip. There might even be enough time between the WCR and Okteenerfest for some recovery/repair time.

We get this every year Don. Someone says let’s have it in Solvang, someone else says let’s do San Diego! All great ideas. The problem is, someone has to plan it. I’d be very happy if someone said let’s do Solvang and I’ll plan it. I’ll wait until the end of the month, one week, then it will be Tahoe and I’ll plan it.

There is a good bit of work that goes in to planning these and I’d be perfectly happy to have someone step up and have it in (insert name of place), until then, Tahoe is in my back yard, I’m willing... smile.gif

Funny but that was the destination for 2017, but tioga pass was closed, so we had to hang around Mammoth. I went skiing one of the days and had a blast anyways. I used to live in Stockton and drove the 914 to Yosemite on many occasions in my youth. I once spun the 914 at least 5 spins on black ice and ended up in a ditch on the way up there one year. This was in the late 70’s when I was much younger and had no fear.

Posted by: Cracker Jun 25 2018, 08:25 AM

The ONLY upside of the big Winter (and pass closings!) was record melt provided to historic water falls in Yosemite. At least according to the Park Rangers...this picture was taken a couple days after WCR last year. Amazing place...

:So cal it is.. thanks for stepping up Steve ! poke.gif Qarl:

When and if SoCal is the choice it will need to be some place N of LA like San Simeon piratenanner.gif or E of LA like Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead or Temecula/Idyllwild. There are plenty of motels in and around Temecula but they can get pricey in the Wine Country. Idyllwild has many small motels 6-10 rooms and 2 motels w/ more than 30. That being said, if Idylwilld were selected and one central hotel was required it would need to be reserved 12-18 months in advance. blink.gif I'm not familiar with the availability in the Big Bear area but I'd suppose the demand would be greater. Palm Springs is another possibility but we would need to get our butt's out of there early and return late or face the Hellacious heat. beerchug.gif

All in all a successful event on the ledger. We did also donate some into event, but really it was all of you that made it work.

A suggestion:

We stopped MUSR at #13 when we only had 5 cars show up. So how about we resurrect MUSR at #14 for 2020? Have it in eastern Colorado because the center of the US sucks for driving roads. Advertise it heavily on here, And see if we can get a LOT of 914s from both coasts to show up.

Okteenerfest, WCR, RRC and the rest take a 1 year hiatus to do the 2020 event.

And we make it a little more than 1 weekend to encourage everyone to show up.

I think over 200 914s in one spot would get the attention of Porsche North America.

And it would be one HELL of a party!!!!!

A lot of great suggestions and if So Cal is indeed in the rotation, you pretty much can't go wrong from Central coast (SLO, Paso, Solvang, & Santa Barbara) down to Malibu (PCH along the coast & Canyons around Mulholland ) as well as the deserted canyon roads that run parallel to the 5FWY from the Grapevine (Bouquet & Spunky Canyons).

You also have Angeles Crest from La Canada to Wrightwood over to Arrowhead or Big Bear and down to Temecula (Mt. Palomar). You could actually do it all.

If there is an organizer that comes forward @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=643 @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=9964 @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=16669 , I would be happy to step up to co-organize by submitting some awesome routes for consideration.

A hiatus would interfere with the plans I have made for WCR 2019, which are to go to WCR 2019 with a 914 of my own.

I don't think a hiatus is necessary.
If the event is planned well and I expect it to be, people will come.

I have a limited range of miles I can afford to go for one of these events.
I only get so much time off and with grand kids, kids and my wife all having different levels of interest in 914s. Not having WCR 2019 is not going to make it more likely I'll attend a bigger event in 2020.

I am likely to go a little farther for a special event in 2020 but it won't have anything to do with 2019.
It will depend on 2020 and the event.

Jim

Posted by: ClayPerrine Aug 29 2018, 05:55 AM

I think you guys misunderstood me.

I was thinking of combining all the events into one for 2020, not 2019.

Posted by: Mikey914 Aug 29 2018, 01:45 PM

Tentatively Don-6 wants to organize a border to border run, or at least a moving WCR for 2020 to allow more folks to participate. We were looking at making a special Tran border badge or something like that. Not having a 2019 WCR really makes no sense. If you don;t want to come to build a bigger budget for 2020 I get it but worst case we have Rob in back up for Reno / Tahoe. area. It's beautiful country. We just want to give the SoCal guys a chance to put something together. In my opinion it's time to go back down that way, but we need someone to step up. That's why I keep bumping the thread.

Thank you!

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=3380 - How much lead-time do we need to get things reserved up in South Lake? If we don't get a SoCal member to chime in, then I don't want Tahoe to no longer be an option because we didn't act soon enough.

SoCal had indicated they wanted 2020 because of the significance. That might have been thrown into question with a push for a National event in 2020. Maybe they'll pipe in here. Otherwise, I've done these 3-4 times so I can throw it together pretty quick.

Much lead-time do you need to secure a hotel with a big 'ol parking lot?

Thanks Rob!

Cool, so maybe that should be the go-date for Tahoe if the SoCal crew doesn't come through.

Posted by: Andyrew Aug 29 2018, 04:36 PM

Problem is at that point you need a very good idea as to attendance. One could say 50 rooms and then have 200 people sign up and be screwed. Or one could say 100 rooms and only have 30 people sign up.

Perhaps we should push a poll with multiple questions for possible locations and choose a date now? Date and location make the biggest difference, the rest is price shopping for a hotel. Tahoe is easy as its a known location with lots of options, but if its another location IE socal then its more difficult and someone needs to start making plans now.

At this point if its Tahoe then Rob is going to need as much time planning it out as possible and not just location...

The only person so far who has stepped up to build 2019 WCR is Rob. 2020 is being discussed with many people.

I vote Tahoe for 2019. Shall we get a vote going?

A suggestion:

We stopped MUSR at #13 when we only had 5 cars show up. So how about we resurrect MUSR at #14 for 2020? Have it in eastern Colorado because the center of the US sucks for driving roads. Advertise it heavily on here, And see if we can get a LOT of 914s from both coasts to show up.
QUOTE

Okteenerfest, WCR, RRC and the rest take a 1 year hiatus to do the 2020 event.

And we make it a little more than 1 weekend to encourage everyone to show up.

I think over 200 914s in one spot would get the attention of Porsche North America.

And it would be one HELL of a party!!!!!

Have been to teenerfest, Rt66 and WCR, and it sure would be nice to party in the Rockies in the middle. Then my drive would be shorter but we would still have serious slopes to make the drives what they oughta be.

Go to Red Rocks

I know. I want to, but this year I can’t. Next year. I hope.

Super In Law and would be in for Tahoe.

Posted by: 76-914 Aug 29 2018, 05:23 PM

Sounds good. SoCal is burned up in some of the nice spots anyway. I'm up for a good drive.

Posted by: Mikey914 Aug 29 2018, 05:32 PM

Actually, we have been able to negotiate (with enough notice) the room block of 20 -25 rooms. When we did WCR this last year, they sold out and we couldn't get more at the same price. The cancellation point was 72 hours which is their standard. We can get more rooms if people step up early. So pretty much the burden is on the attendees to use the negotiated rate for the committed number of rooms. We were to have the rooms released if we got to a week before so we were not out the money.

So if the attendees step up there is no lodging problem, this only happens if people drag their feet. Some had to go to other hotels, but it did work out. The key is to start far enough out. If we got to November and there were no takers to organize this I'd think Reno i/ Tahoe is the best option.

If someone wants to step up, there are a few of us that would help with advice, and some of the behind the scenes stuff. The position is to select and finalize the date based upon the events planned and try to maximize attendance which could be done via a vote here, You get to pick the dates you are available, but if you have a event that requires warmer weather may be best later (we did early June this year).

I would highly encourage someone who has a significant other that is a planner to look at this. My wife was originally supposed to be helping, but my daughter in law stepped in to really help out. You don't have to do it all yourself, just be able to ask for some help where needed.

What we have discovered at Tahoe and this may come as a shock, if you go to the events person and ask for a price for a block of rooms, they bend you over and don't use lube. People were able to actually get much lower pricing just using Hotels.Com. Biggest problem, we can have a registration count in the 60's and people don't stay at the hotel we made the arrangements at. 2010 Tahoe, Eric Shea stayed at the Marriot Timeshare down the block. He had the time share days so why stay at the hotel?

Both time we did Tahoe, we told them we were coming and got accommodations for the cars. 2010 we were given a parking area behind the hotel and it was certainly large enough. The second Tahoe event, we were on top of the parking ramp. Generally speaking, the dates we choose fall during "mud season" which is basically a throw-away for the resorts. Most have closed ski runs, too soon to mountain bike because of the muddy trails, water sports are a little on the cold side. Speaking of which, I discovered that we have a member who between him and his daughters, Captains excursion boats. I'm looking in to what it would take to get us out on the lake for a few hours.

A previous event, McMark got a bill for $5K after the event because we "failed to perform." ie: we didn't rent enough rooms. End result of that, we don't sign nothing. If they want to agree to a number of rooms without a performance contract, great. Mark W. has done that in Oregon.

If someone else steps up, and wants to do it elsewhere, I am very ok with that. But Halloween night, that's all gone. We WILL be at Tahoe.

See my previous post on this thread. I threw my hat in the ring for the routing here in SoCal, but need some co-organizers to step up. I also volunteer with PCA and have put together and led on several drives. Doesn't' matter if you are from NorCal or SoCal to help out with some of the other elements.

Never been on a WCR so can't say what is involved with respect to restaurants, hotels & other activities.

If it ends up being Tahoe, that's cool too!

Santa Cruz, Ca. would be an excellent place for the WCR 2019. Amazing roads, views and food. Plenty of things to do that are auto related or not.

Everyone knows @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=16427 but not sure they're going to want to deal with two WCRs in a row. I'll talk to some of the guys at the 914 Cone Zone on Saturday and see what the consensus is.

Posted by: Mikey914 Aug 30 2018, 11:13 PM

Sounded like @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=20991 wanted to give it a try.
you'll need to pick a location and find the dates that work. Generally late May early June have been the time period. Typically Thursday people start rolling in Friday has a drive and a no hosted dinner. Saturday has a show n shine possibly a tech session, and a drive. Culminates with a dinner typically has an included in price portion. this last year we had a $20 credit that could be used to order whatever they wanted.
Tshirts will generate some revenue. Drives are nice, autocross would be cool if it could be worked in reasonably. Really depends on your local contacts.

I'm willing to help where I can. PM me if you want any observations I have, I'm sure Rob could talk some on the subject also.

It's some work, but it's fun too.

They announced the dates a while ago in a separate thread but no more details than that.
I read in another thread (route 66 I think) that they had announced routes and maybe additional info at the socal holiday lunch.

I am hoping to hear some specifics soon so I can figure out how to get it on my schedule.
