914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Replacing trunk firewall perlon

Posted by: jim_hoyland Jun 11 2018, 04:55 PM

I acquired a new piece of pre-cut perlon from 914Rubber and have done some limited test fitting. Since I only get one shot at gluing the perlon, i’m Looking for advice from someone that’s done this.
Type of glue, tools, solo or Help .

One of my early projects.
Masked off and used spray glue 3M 90 contact cement.
Did it solo but another set of hands is always good. slap.gif

Best of luck!

The glue you see along the edges was already there and I should have taken the time to clean that off first. headbang.gif

Thanks. Good suggestion to mask; did you spray the perlon and metal, or just the metal. And where did you start when attaching the perlon ?

It was suggested I use Loctite300; I have some 3M 77 in the cabinate? Gotta decide what to use

With contact adhesive, usually if you just spray one side, you can remove it. If you hit both sides, it will be permanent.

I sprayed both. Use 3M 77 will be fine. Wish I could remember exactly how I started but I think I started at the top making sure it was perfectly centered and worked my way down. You said you did pre fit so should be fine.

I'd use 3M 90 and spray both surfaces.......

77 isn't strong enough for carpet IMHO.

I mask everything and then only apply glue to top halves (both felt and surface), stick down felt, then fold up bottom half (hold it up with some tape) and spray glue on both bottom halves, then stick that down.

Trying to line up the whole piece is do-able, but more difficult than just half and half.

Great suggestion ! Makes sense

Jim, I hated to ruin the paint underneath so I used double sided tape, the kind with the foam in-between. It works perfect and won't harm the paint. You place it in corners and edges, not all over. Quick to do.

This is on my to-do list as well...

Probably not a huge deal, but ...at the top -does the carpet go all the way up the firewall including on the little flange where the truck seal sits? Said the other way around: does the trunk seal go over the flange and a bit of the carpet?

I had this question too; I just got a look at an original ‘73 and it appeared the felt just meets the rubber seal.
Anyone else......

Another question while we are at the front trunk firewall:

What was the hole in the center for, see red circle. Possible trunk light . It appears to be on all 914s

Great question.....I'd like to know as well.

After looking at some front trunk pics, I'm curious how difficult it is to get the perlon evenly under (or up to) the rubber seal. I've noticed several cars and pics with the ends falling away and showing paint... sad.gif

I found that rare-earth magnets are perfect for positioning the perlon before gluing to the front trunk wall.
The Perlon piece in the pic came 914Rubber and is a better fit than the original piece I had removed

Should I pre-cut an opening for the ID plate ? Or, should it be cut after the Perlon is glued down
