914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Accelerator pedal connection rod

Posted by: tsvo Jun 14 2018, 04:35 PM

I bought a new connection rod from another 914 member. (Thanks Bruce)

I just got around to installing it and I think I might need some help. I bought it because my original would pop off the connection point. Not the back of the pedal, but the linkage. I installed the new one and am still having the same problem.

My question is... is there something I'm missing? Is the throttle cable too tight? It the linkage worn?

Any help is appreciated.

Regards,
Terry

What does it feel like when you attach the rod to the ball ? IIRC, you should feel or hear a snap. I don’t think it can be done without pliers or vice grips. Grease the cup an ball first.....

It does click on. But then comes off easily. I have not used grease, I will try that as well. It is tough to click on, but can be done without pliers/vice grips.

What about adjusting the length of the rod. What effect will that have?

Hold the rod with vice grips, then give the peddle a wack with a rubber malet. Mike

I don't think he's talking about the cup on the back of the pedal, but the cup on the linkage

Correct. Thanks for clearing that up.

If both the old and new linkage pop off, you have replaced the wrong part. My guess is the ball stud on the pedal cluster is too worn.

If I recall correctly. The ball mounts with a nut through the plate.

The ball studs are available separately:

Look inside the ball socket and make sure the retaining ring moves and is not stuck. Use a pick and rust penetrant to free it up. I have a couple more sockets to sent to you. It should snap on and not be easily removed. Also check for missing alignment causes by bent accelerator bell cranks. Very common. Get
