914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Buying Advice

Spent a couple days browsing here. Nice forum.

I stumbled on a 73 that I'm mostly looking for a value on. Body is super straight. Pan has cancer on the drivers inner seat mount, but I'm not worried about patching the pan. 1.7 that's been converted to a two barrel Weber of unknown setup. Fires up and idles instantly, but might be running rich, since it doesn't like to hold idle after it's warmed up. Super sloppy shifting from what looks like worn and missing bushings, but moves between gears fine. Clutch needs adjusting, because it doesn't engage until the very last of the pedal stroke. I'm guessing this might have something to do with an intermittent shudder when going from a dead stop while in first. Or the clutch is fouled with oil.

Wiring has gremlins in the lights, but doesn't look hacked up.

Maybe the worst part is that someone has replaced the stock vinyl with white, and painted the top white. Cheap fixes, but man, it's ugly with that setup.

History is a mystery. Guy selling it bought it on a whim, it seems.

mAh
hle wheels I guess, and odd gold accents on the door handles, latches, etc.

Seems like a steal, but I'm questioning myself.

How is the hellhole?

Unless there's some big, nasty surprise hiding in there somewhere, that seems like a helluva deal. At a minimum, clean it up, fix the vinyl and roof paint, fix the pan and get it running properly, and you'd be able to flip it for a nice profit. Or keep it and have fun!

If you want a 914 this looks like a great candidate!

Like they said, why are you waiting? 3 times the asking price in parts. If you don't buy it, please let me know where it is. Especially if it's in okiehoma.

agree.gif X 10. I would pay $1,500 from just that pic. The best part about the white is it’s easy to change for cheap.

I paid $1500 for mine, and haven't regretted it once, running and driving at that price, it's a no brainer! Drive it like you stole it!!!

If you don't buy it, pay it forward to someone that has wanted one forever but hasn't been able to find a deal like this. Like umm...me?

Seller didn't know much about it. From the receipts in the glovebox and various other bits, bought in 94, and lots of work done by the local VW shop in 96. About $9k total. Then it was barely driven, with stops to the shop for new batteries (oh my), rough running checks, etc. There's less than 1k on the rebuild and carb conversion. Longs are in fine shape. Hellhole is patched up, but never miserable to start with. Needs driver's rear pan work.

Originally green. India red now.

Wouldn't idle when I first drove it. Starts well, not so much after a few blocks. Seems fine idled up a little, but it feels like it's running rich overall.

Clutch needs adjusted badly. Really the only thing that bothers me is a rough shudder when starting off in first. It's about 50/50 on whether it will happen, and there's no issue taking off in second. I'm open to suggestions on what that could be.

I do feel like I stole it, yeah.

Congrats, I paid $2K for a car with a blown engine and a tad bit too much rust....great score.

I'd "fix" the gold door handles and drive it just like that!

Posted by: jitteryjim Jun 25 2018, 06:27 PM

I'm done.

Forum is playing hell with my phone.

Posted by: Cairo94507 Jun 25 2018, 06:38 PM

Congratulations on what appears to be a great buy. Yeah, please lose the door handles in gold, the white sail panels and top. The car will lock 100% better. beerchug.gif

The shudder may be the single carb set up. Not an ideal configuration.
