So I just finished rebuilding my 2056 and while I'm not done setting everything (carbs), it was idling pretty smooth around 1100 RPM. The temp on the CHT gauge raised to 300 after about 20 mins. Just checking if this is normal idle behavior. The stock temp gauge didn't go up much. Running 10/40 Brad Penn. 84 degrees and humid outside (car was in the garage)

The typical fully warmed idle temp for my old 2270 on #3 was around 325. You're in good shape

Also, in regards to your oil pressure from the post in your other thread...my cold oil idle pressure was around 60 and warm was approx 18 (or just slightly under 20). If it was the middle of the brutal days of summer it would be around 15 at idle.

That seems about right for mine too.

You will see temp changes WAY faster with the spark plug meter then the oil temp meter. They are measuring different things. Oil responds much faster then the spark plugs, and #3 is the hottest plug.

Mine runs around 250 at idle and 325 when cruising at around 3000 rpm and ambient being around 70.

Gas engines are not meant to be left idling like a diesel, they will actually overheat if left idling for long periods of time.
I agree it's normal.

Timing and carb tuning first.

Make absolutely sure you've correlated/synced what you see with a timing light and what the 123Ignition says.

Thanks all!

I definitely need to ensure the timing is matching the 123. The carbs were actually in sync as far as the idle settings. I still need to adjust air/fuel mixture.

When you sync your carbs and set idle, REMEMBER that you idle will change when the engine is hot. If you set idle while the engine is still warming up, your nice 1100 rpm idle will be an 1500rpm idle when warm.

Waiting for the engine to be warm will ensure a good driving idle, but may make starting the car a bit more tricky, since there is no choke.

You all know Zach meant head temps respond faster than oil. He knows what he's talking about, but just to clarify in case someone took this wrong. Oil responds slower. Head temps are the quickest tell.
