914World.com _ 914World Garage _ New type 4/4cyl mufflers various flavors

Posted by: mb911 Jun 29 2018, 05:37 AM

I have been looking for a new product for a while. I currently manufacture 13 parts for the 914-6 market and wanted to do something for the 4cyl market. I have waffled for a couple of years on 4cyl mufflers and think I am ready to commit to making some. Would even offer a group buy . what I am thinking of offering is a 2in 1 out similar to a 914-6 muffler. They would be 6" diameter, 2.5" tail pipe and I would start by making the most popular set up voted by all of you. So if you were in the market for a quality stainless muffler would it be for a 2.0 or a 1.7/1.8?

I also should note I am not looking to compete with anyone here so would only offer it with standard tail pipe location. There also would need to be someone commited to testing one of them as well as I don't have a 4cyl car. And dad's car won't be drivable for years.

Attched are some pictures of my 2 in 1outs we made for the 6 cyl cars.

So what say all ?

2.0L version for me.

I would also be willing to be the test subject if needed.

I'm sure my flow path is different than what you would do but my 4cyl muffler is available with a left exit in the stock location.

Ben,

This is good news for Type 4 owners. I hope this works out for you. I would be interested in the 2.0 configuration with the outlet in the stock location.

When you say 2in-1out, I hope that means 4in-1out, which will connect to 2.0 type heat exchangers.

Yes. 4 in 1 out

Chris yours would be the high hp setup. Mine would be the more traditional setup.. I don't want to compete with your product line

I understand that yours is intended as a stock replacement, and will only fit 2L HEs anyway.
Mine is designed with maximum flow capacity, and has a high end price-tag to go with it.
My EVO4 rightly competes with the Scart from Europe, and honestly I don't know why anyone would bother importing that one with mine being available. I'd be willing to bet that mine not only sounds better, but offers more HP as well.

Great....

I have a Tangerine exhaust on one of my cars and LOVE IT!!! Wouldn't change it. biggrin.gif

However, Ben...I'm IN on your proposed exhaust (2.0) for my black 74.

Need more details and pricing as things develop.

I would think that the demand wold be for the 2.0L type. Be ware that the 1.7 had two variations, one for the early snow plow deep valance and one for the 1.7 shallow valance.

The difference is the exit position of the tail pipe on the left side.

I have an original 1.7L early which you can have for the shipping cost.

The 1974 1.8 muffler had larger pipes like the 2.0L but with the 1.7-1.8L flange pattern.
What would be helpful is to get one installed and make a sound clip of it as many owners are concerned with the sound. Some want loud ( not me ) and some want a powerful deep tone.

Anyone see a problem with using a larger pipe more free flowing unit on a stock 1.7L Wil reducing the back pressure have any negative affects ?

What is the target price?

Exactly and agree 100% we can talk a bit as this project unfolds again don't want to compete. I see a void between your wonderful products and the triad exhaust which is currently shelved..

Yes we need to test these for sure. I will need a couple of folks to step up and we can work something out to make it work out..

Price point not sure yet.. My group buy for the 914-6 muffler was in the round about price range of 650.. We will see though as I had 10 to make that work. The 914-6 rally mufflers I make at 1k but that is a very special muffler and again now approach what Chris is doing and that is not my intention.. We. Have to small of community to compete against eachother.

Posted by: mb911 Jun 29 2018, 10:53 AM

I have had allot of pms on this. Here is the deal

I need 2 people here to commit to the following

1 2.0 muffler sent to me for mock up and a commitment to buy the 1st prototype at a fraction if the retail cost TBD, then test the muffler and give feedback. Your orginal will be sent back when mock up is done.

2nd the same for a 1.7/1.8

Please not tail pipes will rotate and clamp on so this will help with multiple fitments.

Thanks Everyone for the feedback.

What about a two in two out for a 2.0 stock HE ?

That'd be my vote.

See how this snowball's.. I am not sure on that.. I think the custom tail pipe locations wade into Chris' area..

I have a stock 2.0 exhaust set up I would be happy to let you use.

I'll PM you.

Sounds good and to clarify I trying to fill the triad void.. I will not allow it to be competitive with Chris and tangerine. His system fills a perfect niche for hi performance applications.

Are you going for more of a stock sound, or a triad sound? I have a triad on my 2.0 currently, looking for something other than a bursch for my 72 1.7 Still have the original muffler if needed.

Close to stock sounding is the goal with a bit more tone.

Just a quick update.. So far nothing. I haven't received any samples so this is dead unless I have some interested folks in sending a sample muffler.

Posted by: theer Jul 12 2018, 03:55 PM

PM sent

Posted by: mb911 Jul 12 2018, 08:15 PM

Just to be clear still looking for samples = will continue on project.

Posted by: GeorgeRud Jul 12 2018, 08:32 PM

Have you reached out to Brad or Garold Shaffer whether they may have some old ones you could use to check figment?

Posted by: mepstein Jul 12 2018, 08:55 PM

I can send a stock 1.7 if you need it. I wont need it back. I don't have any 2.0 mufflers.

Posted by: Travis Neff Jul 12 2018, 11:41 PM

I have a liestritz 2.0 muffler I can lend you. Let me know..

Posted by: mb911 Jul 13 2018, 05:31 AM

A as stock as possible 1.7 and 2.0 would be great. I really need to know my constraints from a mount up stand point.

Ideally some one sends one that wants one so we can work together on the development.

Posted by: mb911 Jul 22 2018, 02:30 PM

Still not seen any samples to get this project started.. I really want to do this but need that commitment from someone to work with me on this.

Posted by: mb911 Jul 27 2018, 11:29 AM

1.7 muffler is being delivered today so making progress.

Posted by: mepstein Jul 27 2018, 12:19 PM

I purchased a prototype 4 cylinder muffler from Ben a couple years ago. It was a really cool piece. When I decided to go six, I sold it and now I believe its with Zach. I'm surprised more people aren't jumping on this. Lightweight, cool looking, stainless...

Posted by: 1adam12 Jul 27 2018, 02:03 PM

I will be in the market for a 4cyl performance muffler for my '72 1.7L. Trying to convince myself out of dropping $1K for a SCART system now that my car is finally running.

As Stone mentioned, there is a difference in exit pipe location. I installed a late 1.7/1.8 rear valence on my car and my stock tail pipe is slightly further inset than the late valence cut out.

An interesting concept may be to offer an adjustable tip that can slide to the position of either cut out location. Some people that don't run a rear valence may not like the sight of a slip joint but I would rock it with a decent looking clamp.

Still need a 2.0 muffler as well for mock up..

A very cool looking piece but what's it sound like.....a wet fart or a throaty ramble! A good sound track video with a firm price point will help sell these.

I make a 4 in 1 out that would work for you. I don't yet have the 2.0 mufflers done.

Posted by: JeffBowlsby Mar 6 2019, 08:37 PM

What’s involved in getting these in a polished finish?

And do the twin pipes clear a rear stock narrow valence?

They look great BTW.

Posted by: mepstein Mar 6 2019, 08:42 PM

Now there’s a reason for the four cylinder cars to go valance free.

Or you may not want it.....I can send picture tomorrow if it ever stops raining here. No offense to Chris but healthy competition is good for everyone. I would love to have the most stock looking highest horsepower gain best sounding exhaust pipe available that I could afford. Jus' sayin'.....let me know if I can help.....

Since the original and repoped mufflers aren't available for '75 or '76 model year you would certainly have a lock on the market. I can also stop welding up mine for the umpteenth time if you make one for me.

Gonna offer the Sport style 1.7 muffler at $770 and the stock tail pipe location at $675. Let me know who is interested. These will go to $850 and 750 respectively after the initial launch.. Yes I know they are not cheap .. Sorry hardly any margins in these.

Posted by: Optimusglen May 8 2019, 11:58 AM

A little update to the thread. I worked with Ben to get my muffler and finally got it set. We worked on some fitment stuff for mine so I'm sure he'll take that info to help refine them.

my car: 1971 with a 1911. Stock 1.7 heat exchangers converted to headers, dual Webers.

I'll try to make this clear, I understand that not everyone will read this, but yes I am going to get a good video with sound. It's a busy week so I'm not sure when, but it'll happen. And even though I said this I'm sure there's going to be someone who suggests the novel idea of getting a video. idea.gif lol-2.gif

My thoughts on it: overall it sounds great. At idle it still sounds like a type-4 of course. Not too loud, you can hear the drivetrain clacking away still and you don't have to worry about getting noise complaints from neighbors. Cruising with light throttle it sounds great, gives the 1911 some grunt. WOT is really great, very harmonious with the Weber velocity stacks. WOT to off-throttle there's a nice hum.

I've always felt Ben's exhaust was worth the price just for the looks. Better sound and performance is just a bonus. I bet it's half the weight of stock.

Yes stock outlet is first.

Let me know as we will take deposits of $100 to make sure we have committed folks this will be a 4-6 week build time as flanges are 2-3 weeks out as I just approved the drawings yesterday for laser cutting.

Interested in one for a 73 2.0

I haven't seen a price in the thread. Can you share?

$695 .. Lighter then stock all stainless construction, all TIG welded and laser cuts.

Ben, is there any chance you can show a few photos and/or a sound clip of the 4-in-1-out 2.0L muffler before requesting deposits?

Mike sorry nonr to be had. There is a couple folks that have the sport mufflers and working on sound clips.. I don't have a type 4 myself so no way to make a sound clip myself.. A little bit of this is faith I know but it is internally the same exact design I did on my 914-6 2 in 1 out group buy so a copy if the original porsche design with a little larger tubing for a little more flow.. Other then that it is a focus on a quality light weight stainless version of the heavy stock muffler. Regular retail will be $850 just as my 914-6 models are.

Sorry not the answer you wanted but it is what it is..

Posted by: mb911 Jun 12 2019, 02:41 PM

Flanges will be in week after next. Have 1 confirmed order. Also going to make some 912E mufflers and having those flanges cut at the same time if you know anyone looking..

I started out with noble intentions, my wife has several employees that do audio and video and they have a pretty relaxed work environment typically, so I told Ben that I would get some good video of my muffler once it was mounted up, to give you guys a sound clip. Well, they got hammered with a bunch of projects so I didn't feel right asking them to do it, so you're stuck with what I can record.

I know I say it in the vid, but my car is a 1911 with factory heat exchangers (stripped to bare headers) running dual Weber 40's. Please don't count my "um's" and "ah's", haha, I'm not one to make video blogs.

As I mentioned, sounds great on the street, neighbors all still talk to me. Intake noise from the Webers overpowers the exhaust at WOT, but the exhaust sound picks up where the Webers fail at idle and cruising. Really a good harmony.

I am going to try and get some exterior take-off and drive-by shots this afternoon.

piratenanner.gif - can't wait to get mine!

Not that I really need it right now. sad.gif

I still haven't finished fixing chassis and I have two engines that need rebuilding.

Not worried at all. Just glad to see someone like you making a nice exhaust out of stainless.

I'd love to do one out of Titanium for the weight save but let's face it. My welding skills are no match for yours. Also lets face it - I have higher priorities -- like putting this car back together!
