Well its been over 33 years that I have owner this car as the 3rd owner.
I have finally broken down and am getting the surface rust repaired and having the car fully resprayed. I am told it should be ready by Mid August. The car was torn down this week and the good news is that after 33 years of mud and dirt in the rockers that there is no rust. Surprising, as the car first came in to the country in Chicago and wound up spending time in San Francisco before I got it.
The rest of the car had a few rust bubbles at the base of the windshield and on the passenger door along with the usual dents and dings that come with keeping a car in a garage with little kids opening the car door next to it or traveling the So Cal freeways and picking up misc. road debris impacts.
The car is going to stay its' original color "Ancona Blue" along with all of the appearance group finishes.
As progress continues I'll continue to update. Thanks for looking.
Good luck with the project. I hope the shop keeps his proposed schedule. The car already looks very nice.
BTW, nice collection of air cooled
Great time to back date those bumpers and lose the warts........
I love that blue!

Tom, use a Fein tool with a carbide blade. Don't know what they used 100 years ago as an adhesive, but it beats breaking a few, especially if they're unmatchable.
Have fun...
Your half way there on the side marker removal if your painting the car
Attached thumbnail(s)
I spy an old beetle! It looks strikingly similar to one Larmo has recently been sporting about....
Congrats on the pristine longitudinals! Love the Ancona Blue and the five lugs! Mark
Well the car is not blue anymore and the rust is gone. Thankfully, all has been surface and nothing through the metal. Now in primer and getting blocked in the coming week and ready for paint in about two.
While that is going on, I now need to get the seats off for a recover. the fabric on the left is what came on it from the previous owner. A recover of the center panel. Definably not factory original, so I am going back to one of the optional factory plaids. For'75 one of the colors that would have originally been on the car is Matisse Blue #80.
Stopped by Ron's today to see how he is doing and to do a primer check before heading off to the paint booth in about a week or two. Getting closer and closer to a new 2-stage painting of Ancona Blue. He is doing a great job. Almost all of the little imperfection are gone on the exterior of the body. I should hopefully have it back in my garage in about 6 weeks, were it will sit until I reinstall the interior. Time to get my butt in gear.
Here are some more shots of the car now that is has been wet sanded with 500 grit.
Still some more work to be done in spots like the rear tail light and then on to the trunks and engine compartment.
Well it has been a while since I had an update on the paint, but got to see it today after the first full round of color sand. here are some shots of the work to date.
It is finally getting closer. A couple weeks from now it will be back, getting the engine back in and working on the interior.
Got a nice message this afternoon from the painter in the form of some pictures. A great way to end the weekend. Getting closer to being able to drive again.
Wow nice colour .
Great looking color. Congratulations on a nice job.
Very nice work!
Looking Good!
Latest update on progress. Getting closer to re-assebmbly.
Door sills are finally done
Sills after plugging Zeibart treatment holes.
Cleaned up battery tray and engine compartment
What is a amazing is how the color changes in the photo. The engine compartment is the same color as the rear trunk lid. I know because I have seen it.
Reassembly has started.
looks great!! beautiful color. Just went thru this so all I can say is take your time on the reassembly, it does take longer than you think it will, especially when you startd looking at your other old trim parts along side the new paint, and decide you will replace a lot of it( well that's what happened to me) . anyway looks like he did a great job! Don't forget to clean all the ground points good, I had issue with my fuel pump firing due to not making sure that ground was good before I put the tank back in lol! I think other than the new door seals, the triangle glass was a real challenge to put back in - but otherwise the thing that was the hardest was getting the sail panel vinyl in properly. there is a nice write up here on world by a member that did a step by step that was helpful.
keep posting pics,
Phil
Some update photos as the re-assembly has begun.
Finally get to put all those boxes from 914Rubber to use
914Rubber new parts to freshen up the old rubber and plastic
original windshield chrome back in
New sail and targa vinyl
More photos from the reassembly
Even have my new 2.2 emblem attached (provided by 914world member Mueller).
Front end back together
(914Rubber LED lamps in my original Cibie housings to go with Spokes Euro LED turn signals)
She looks great, thanks for the update.
Today was the day to get it from the painter and transfer it to the mechanic. Paint and exterior re-assembly is done.
Carlos made sure it was well taken care of.
Some more shots of the progress.
Once again, thank you Mueller. Still trying to decide if I put the letters back on the grill
Next step is to straighten out some electrical gremlins, put in the engine, trans and interior.
That car is gorgeous! I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I like BUBS. Great car.
"Big ugly bumpers"
Had not posted anything here in a bit. Currently redoing the clutch while the engine and trans are out. I picked these up today from Tony at Autobahn Interiors in San Diego.
Rails on and ready to go back in the car.
Been awhile since I updated on what was happening. Installed one of the seats back in the car so it can be test driven. I was hoping to get the car back for Christmas, but that did not happen due to a few unseen issues when the car came back from paint. Before putting the gas tank back in we found out it had rust in it and the fuel filter, for the short amount I drove it, was turning dark rather quickly. Had to get a new tank to replace it and repaint it. Did that and then found out the fresh air box was broken and had to get a replacement for that. Then before putting that back in found out the fan was not working anymore and had to go and find one of those. Ahh the joys of a classic car. The long and short of it is that I am down to now just waiting to get it back, hopefully before the new new and install the rest of the parts waiting in the garage.
Sorry about the photo, can't get it to flip over.
I love your seats.
Beautiful work and progress
What is your tire/wheel combination?
Wow, everything looks great Franz!!!!
I can't wait to see it in the flesh at a cars 'n coffee.
latest update now that I have te car back home. some update photos. I almost forgot how much fun this is to drive. Fresh clutch made shifting so much nicer that before.
Painted everything except for the underside. did not take it all the way down to a bare tub.
Removed the rest of the interior pieces, handbrake, seatbelts, front foam block runner carpets.
Was not able to make it to the Phoenix Club today since I still dont have everything back in the car, but made a lot of progress yesterday, while it was raining outside.
installed 914Ruber vinyl Kit, installed 914Rubber german material salt and pepper carpet kit w/ their black anodized door carpet trim (replacing the old plastic ones), installed my refurbed back pad. reattached seat belts, installed repainted seat brackets, reinstalled repainted e-brake lever and couple minor door rubber window trim pieces.
Still have door cards/armrests, sound deadener in the doors, center console, center seat pad/storage, front bulkhead perlon and the seats to go. The finish line is getting close.
I need to get this done before the Porsche gathering in El Segundo on the 16th of this month.
Car looks great. Congrats
Fantastic.
Okay, it looks like you'll be ready to enter it at our OCR Concours this June, where they'll be doing a bit of special 914 recognitions as well.

My first 914 was a brand new 1975 Ancona Blue 1.8 liter purchased when I lived in Kankakee, IL. Bought it from dealer in Champaign. Sold it in 1979 when I was transferred overseas...in the four years of ownership, I put 117,000 miles on it. Loved that car
Absolutely beautiful car! Can't wait to see the interior with the new seats in place. Are your wheels 16x7? It's got a great stance.
One step closer. One of the two recovered seats in and just some speakers and pods to install. Holding off on putting the center console back in. I'm going to try it for a while without. It's raining right now out here in California or I would take it out and run it.
At least I knw I'll be able to be ready for the upcoming gathering in El Segundo.
one more
and I was able to clear out the garage for its final parking space now that the misc. parts are in the car or packed up.
Congrats.... looking beautiful!
Better move them skateboards!
Thanks for the updates, she looks great!
Looks great. Can’t wait to see it in person.
Congrats! That has to feel really good - I can only dream of the day. Still a gorgeous car.
Just read your topic while doing some research. Hopefully I find some bumpers like those later in the future.
