This stock oil pump came from a running motor. I didn't have a guage, but the dummy light always stayed off.
Is this normal or is this pump dead? Surprisingly it feels smooth to the touch.
How gouged out is the housing? One look into mine and I flicked it.

Those marks are probably corrosion. It might be that the engine had a long unused period. I would not worry much because of that.
What you should look for is the free tuning gear pin. That pin tends to dislocate and hit the camshaft gear. That is the most common failure of the type 4 pump.
Yes, the engine sat in my SoCal garage for about 3 years not running, but assembled and full of oil.
Is this the pin your're referring. It's solid, so I'm glad I don't have to go shopping for a new pump.

Show a picture of the opposite side of the pin.
If the pin is not flush with the pump internal cap, then the pump is done.
