Watching Jack yesterday I was thinking I should start a thread with what he's working on. Seems like its my mission in life to keep him occupied with projects. I know for certain that these little cars we all love have lengthened his life.
Friday August 9th. 2018
After rummaging around looking for a couple parts for Mike (Warpig) I run across the shifter piece of engine tin for my side shifter 1.7. Hmmmm. Matt has had a beautifully painted/powder coated piece laying on his stash of parts. But the tunnel portion is up side down. Hmmm. I've got a few power tools. So I ask Jack, what do think can we cut out the tunnel and flip it over? Off he goes ......... Oh yeah it's 92 degrees in the shop.
Here's where we start.
Tuning up the pieces so they can be welded. That's where we'll start this am.
And yes, I know this will have a sad ending some day .............. but for the time being I'll let everyone else enjoy his work.
Thanks for starting this thread. I've never met the man but he is an inspiration and I often wonder what he's up to. Looking forward to many more posts here.
Awesomeness to see Jack back at it!
Nice to see.
Realistically we will all have the same ending.
I truly appreciate seeing him working on our cars. I believe without purpose in life we just die.
My father-in-law is going to be 93 in January and we just took him to the Gold Country to a nice remote cabin home for 4 days to just relax, have good food and enjoy the surroundings. He is still mentally acute but his body is failing him and he has a hard time walking. Hearing is a little problematic too as he refuses to consider a hearing aide.
Oh, he drove 30 miles to get to our home so we could leave and the drove home when we returned.
Since the folks here have a COTM, Could you invent/establish and vote for
Father In Law of the Month/Year
I know who I would vote for!
Thanks for sharing Cary, our visit to your shop was really cool !

Believe me we have offered to get him hearing aides and he won't even consider it. That does not keep us from trying though.
Exactly.
'If you talk to the back of my head I'll never hear you.' Welcome to MY world! Makes for a good excuse.
Here's Mike and Jack loading up Mike's 1981 ROW SC tub that's heading to Rothsport.
Jack's unraveling the manual come-along. I went inside and grabbed our retreival electric winch. He thought it was a home.
God has a special garage for 914 lovers keep this thread going
Just remember that heat is a big cardiovascular stress. He should watch for light headedness. Neighbors used to fish my dad out of the bushes in Seattle cause he insisted on using a push reel mower in hilly Fremont, Seattle. At 90.
Visiting my own superinlaw in north bend this week, but she only worked in a sawmill.
Someday I hope to have tried to live up to them, but it takes a lot of work.
Thank him again for my trunk latch. Donna just told her mom about it today in passing.
He's really cautious. His Fit Bit is on him at all times.
I'll take a shot of his new easy chair at the shop on Thursday.
While I was helping Mike finish up his car for his journey to Arizona. I pulled the seats out of Matt's car for Jack to do a little seat mount rail tuning.
I did find one of the mounting holes on the right seat was stripped out. So I tapped it out to 7mm. Ran to Ace for a couple 7mm * 20mm bolts. 1, I painted the bolt head blue, 2, the head is 11mm. Gooder as new.
I've been holding out on you guys ...............
His next project was the fire extinguisher mount for Matt's car.
Proving yet again that keeping active and having interests is a secret to a long and happy life. Hope to see you both again soon.
Next he build me a test tube rack out of some scrap oak.
Test tubes will be for dipping old wiring connectors. I need to tinker with the witch's
brew.
In the mean time he split a 1/2 of wood with the wood splitter. Winter wood supply is all in.
Last week he created a new shifter protection loop for inside the tunnel.
Last night he started making patterns for the bulkhead repair / reinstall.
It got pretty tore up coming out. So I'll need to recreate the end pieces.
Job one. Matching up the bulkhead to the cowl lip.
Super In Law is right!
I have enjoyed following his work on your other threads.
John
Here he is cleaning at Marcus's work party.
Here he is adding 3/8" spacers to raise the frame bench.
Last weekend here he is loading our project car onto the new chassis rack.
Great to see Super Duper in Law up to his old tricks again.
Nice rack there too.
Thanks for sharing Cary; your shop is so impressive, glad I got a tour at the WCR.

Saturday he was helping with the rebuilding of Taylor's chassis ties.
This morning he's heading off to southern Oregon with one of his buddies on a road trip.
They're going to re drive some of the roads they built in their careers with Federal Highways as Project Engineers. Sounds like no real plan. Plans to be back on Saturday.
Here's Super In Law continuing the work on Taylor's chassis brace / tie.
I love this forum because of awesome stuff like this.
I noticed in your post #33 what appears to be a Peter Wright anvil very similar to mine:
Here he is working on the Christmas tree ................
Money shot!
Here he is cleaning up our new to us commercial blasting cabinet.
Here he is working on our suspension console tie plates. Putting together a set for the left side.
Here he is working on the mock up for our engine drop / test run stand.
Something like this, but narrower so we can drop the engine on it. It will be Super In Law customized for sure.
Nice work
I feel like I've been neglecting you guys. I post most everyday on Instagram.
#MiddleMotors
Pretty much chronicle Jack's exploits along with projects at MiddleMotors.
Here he is in July finishing up the tuning of the left rear qtr. panel on Taylor's chassis.
Then this summer we painted the old farm house after 30 years.
Plus we resided the front. Some portions of that wall were from the original homestead
built in the late 1800's.
After 2 month time out. Me prepping the Rothsport Red Sled and Desert Flyer for our
class winning NORRA 500 race.
Here Super In Law is creating fixture pieces for pre drilling the cases for pipe plugs.
Now hes working on our combo engine drop / run stand.
After our test drop I think we'll build two or three. One run stand. Two drive train storage dollies.
Welds .............. forgot to turn on gas.
Still cooking at 89 1/2 .................
It just doesn't get any better than this.....He's my Hero..
hell most folk's welds with gas look like those.
Didn't he tell you they were just test welds no need to waste gas
We need Super-In-Law t-shirts. Seriously.
Big Holiday season hug to Jack, from all of us!
I want to be like Jack when I grow up!
Glad to see the posting and to see Super-In-Law still gettin' it done.
This simply has to be the coolest thread.
Here he is engineering and test fitting the rear solid transmission mount for the run mode. Ours will be bolted in and isolated. I hate rattles.
We're on about plan H. Went thru a lot of variations. But I wanted quick and dirty.
We've been busy all week.
Me, making sure I've ordered all the parts for both the engine stand and the DP long
repair. Plus lots of shop housekeeping and maintenance.
Here's a good shot of the Mad Scientist at work.
A couple shots of our work in progress.
Stand is already in use. Ran an oil pressure test on the DP engine yesterday, 30 seconds ZERO oil pressure. Mechanical oil pressure gauge doesn't waver.
Had to walk away .................. telling myself, I wasn't going to EVER start someone
else's engine rebuild again.
Yep. Best thread ever.
I sure wish my dad hadn't died young (56). There's so much I could have learned from him.
Time fly's ...............
Merry Christmas from MiddleMotors and Jack & Cary
Work continues on the engine run stand. Should be running the DP zero oil pressure
engine be next week. No primer goo in the pump.
But here he is chomping at the bit.
He can't wait to fabricate the next gadget. Monday was a saddle mount for the dual mechanical oil pressure sender.
Thursday, fuel pump and oil catch can mounts.
Ya know, if Jack were to start building Suby conversions he could label them a SuperRoo's!
Super In Law is the man!
Love seeing him getting cool projects done.
Happy holidays and New Year!
John
Jack's work continues on the frame bench.
Using one of our donor cars for a jig mule.
We're going to swap out the heavy pulling beams for channel iron. It will give me
more room to move around and work.
We're onto chassis number 3 for measuring before we drill the pin holes in the
frame bench fixtures.
Looks like Jesus dragging his cross (cross member).
Super In Law is amazing and should be an inspiration to all of us.
I wish he were closer to me, although frankly, if he would work on my car I would load it on a trailer and drive it there from PA!
Love to see what he is up to..... keep the threads/posts coming!
He gives me inspiration. At 71 I try to keep as busy as possible, you stop, you drop.
love this thread
may become a classic one day
Frame bench all finished for the most part.
Here he is taking a few shots with his new Iphone 8.
Yesterday he did tune the right tranny mount a bit. About 1.5mm too tight. Left last
night with him cutting the steering rack mount in half and creating a sleeve so they
can be used seperately.
Thought I'd shared this with you guys ..............
His new hearing aids are great. He can tune/adjust with his new IPhone 8.
Three settings. Regular, restaurant and off for grinding and hammering.
And the hearing aids act as phone and music headphones.
Impressive work, and very nice thread.
If you have details on the hearing aids, I would appreciate. It’s very difficult to communicate with my dad.
Thanks!
Hi Cary,
Could you post a few detailed pics of the front bench fixtures please.
Thanks,
Keep it coming! Love this thread.
I am a firm believer in use it or lose it! Great inspiration to all, God bless Jack!
I think the t shirt idea is great, I am in for one.
For Luke ....
Center support ............. we had trouble holding the tube in the drill press.
He wanted to redo it. I told him to leave it. It will make me smile some day.
Time to get back to work ....................
Cary, Thanks for posting the pics. Got any pics of the front strut sections ?
I plan on using a cross member for my bench fixture as well. I'm not sure about the strut section yet.
I'll shoot them tomorrow.
Time for a little catch up. Super In Law is basically in prison. Goes nowhere, see no one.
Last week weather was nice so he worked in the backyard.
He's uncovering what we call the chicken house. Basically its his 40 years of going to garage sales hoarders storage unit.
A little pile for American pickers ...............
What a way to start your nursing career. My little one is doing her residency at St.James hospital in Butte, Mt. Surgery / Pediatrics so she's kinda safe. She'd been there 4 weeks when things broke out. I don't think they have any cases yet. They only have 6 of those HVAC controlled rooms.
All good here ............
Thanks for letting us know. Super-in-law crossed my mind when all of this broke out. I am glad to see he is staying away from everyone.
My father-in-law is 94 and he is confined to quarters to the extent possible. We live about 30 minutes away and we check on him by phone daily and then shop for him one time per week. Try telling a 94 year old he can't go anywhere where people are. But I explained that for him, catching this virus would be a life ender and he now understands.
Geez ............... Time fly's.
Here's Jack's (Super In Law) latest creation.
Built a tool to press a jack post indentation into 18 ga sheet metal. Primarily for
left side jack post cancer. But still use it on small right side repairs.
Press portion. He did use up some .030 wire .
Receiving/pocket portion of the tool.
Pressed into patch panel
