914World.com _ 914World Garage _ WOT, but still a bit in the family

Teenhulk my 17 yr/old son realizes that his 914 project is at least 3-5 years from completion but wanted a car now.
I found him a real nice condition 1982 Audi coupe, 5 cylinder.
I believe it's a B2, same but upgraded VW dasher?

Like to lower it a few, bilsteins, don't want to kill the ride, don't want to bag it. just something well sorted, firm...you know like a well sorted 914.
Even I don't like the rears, they are pretty weak, car sits nose high like a stock 914.

4X100 wheel pattern so any VW, honda, hyundai, chevy cobalt, etc etc., rim will fit with the right offset. Lots of cheap choices for rims.

Any suggestion from the collective? Steer me in the right direction.
I've asked over on the vortex forum, I'm guessing that's the best source?

The ad for the car he bought,

just make sure the injection system is up to snuff. That's the only problem I ever had.

I believe the ride was raised to accommodate headlight/bumper height requirements. there should be compatible suspensions available to give it the European spec ride height.

Poor high school kid who works at Timmy's, if it wasn't for dad's loan company he wouldn't be able to afford the suspension mods, let alone a quattro body kit.

Way too nice of a car to kit anyways.

The car is in very good condition, I've been driving it for a couple days. biggrin.gif
Just a few odds and sods to make it better, shifter bushings, engine/trans mounts, wiper blades, etc.
Owned since 1989 by a obsessive compulsive east european car mechanic. Never winter driven, my son is the 3rd owner.

Tempting idea.gif

NOT slap.gif

But the high ride and small tires almost makes it look like it is. Even I would do something about the stance.
Everyone says it looks like a Delorean, really it's a small german tank....3500lbs.

Nice car. I had an 84 in white. The 1st wife got it in a divorce. Another story.

There is a guy that knows a lot about these cars. His name is Dan Garza. Sorry, but the best way to find him is on Facebook.

If you have or you son has a Facebook account, you can usually find him on a couple of pages.

Small Chassis Audi
Pre-95 Small Chassis Audi

There are a few peoples on these pages and they could help you. Been a while since I had mine, but I was running Konis and springs.

Oh yeah, the car weighs less than 3000lbs.

A couple of things.

The Dasher/Audi Fox are considered B1 cars. The CGT is more like the Quantum. In Europe the Dasher is the same as the B1 Passat and Quantum was a B2 Passat.

I am not following you, but you won't get much out of the VW Vortex Fox page. I have one of those cars also.

If you decide to up grade the front brakes, this car has the same brake carrier bolt pattern as the later years 4k/Quantum/VW Fox/VW Scirocco cars. Your brakes are probably 239X20. You can do an easy upgrade to 256X20.

Send my a PM and I can send you pictures and stuff.

Checkout www.audizine.com, audiworld.com for forums. Quattroworld, too.

The 5 cylinder motor is fantastic.

2bennett is an Audi tuner, also sells used parts.

Look at blauparts.com for maintenance type parts.

cool I'll check them out.

One thing I don't understand is what the "in the know" guys call this car (B2, a80...???) seems it must have crossed many model lines.

Hate to be a bummer but that is really old car for a seventeen year old. Air bags, and a kickin sound system, plus reliability is in order driving.gif

audifans.com is another possibility. Scott Mockrey used to run a website ("sjmautotechnik" that had great info on the 5 cylinder engines, especially the FI)---not sure if he's still around. Anderson Motorsports near the Twin Cities (MN) used to be good source of suspension bits and pieces.

That is an earlier (quad headlight) B2 80/81 car.
I owned a later (87) 4KCSQ which I wish I still had.
I never liked the coupe styling. I dealt with Scott at SJM a lot, but not in a few yrs now after losing my UrS6 Avant to the Ex.
The 2.2L 10V w/CIS is dead reliable if maintained.
Not much in terms of upgrades other than a 10V (or 20V~!) turbo swap.
The B3 coupe quattro was the bomb! Unless you could find one of the few RS2's produced. w00t.gif aktion035.gif
Sorry I cant help much re suspension advice as the 4kCSQ was the winter car smile.gif

Well I guess he has to sell off his 914 project too. rolleyes.gif

He's a careful driver, almost all country roads and small towns, already badly wiped out an ATV and found out he doesn't like getting hurt. He's careful, already stated the obvious that he's having troubles judging distances etc. Slowing down too early at stops, corners etc.

I see him safer in a 3000+ german tank than a chevy cobalt, civic, etc and everyone we looked at in price range was a POS.
That said he was hooked on this as soon as he saw it. I had to spot him 1.5K, but it's his summer work money and he's paying me back.

He was looking at bugs, his buddies are all into oddball/old cars. I've taken him to bug shows since he was a toddler. His best friend every family member has a show/summer car. Even the grandma has a 40's chev P/U, mom a 38 ford rumble seat, both chevy 350's, sorted, etc. They are always taking my kid with them to car shows since he was in grade 1.

Most gearheads in Canada have a summer car, winter car and strive for a cool weekend car.

A job like this works for me, but I bet this is for '83-, I've lowered VW aircooled, 914 conversion and welded in a couple mustang front ends. I can mod suspension bits but I don't want crazy, I want something that just bolts to the car.

Kickin' ride. Way cooler than my car at 17.

Posted by: charlesmac Sep 14 2018, 12:37 PM

I had a 86' 4000 quattro that was a great car to drive. I took the new suspension parts off before I got rid of it. Koni shocks (strut inserts), H&R lowered springs, new strut mounts, control arms with new bushings. If they will fit your son's ride, I'd love them to go to a good home! What little internet reading I did showed the front shocks are the same as are the upper strut mounts. Let me know if you are interested.

Great cars, sell for heaps in my country, motors are pretty much bulletproof, injection system is very reliable but moisture in the fuel can wreak the fuel metering head pretty quickly.
The sound of the 5 pot motor is rather special ,they sound even better if you open up the exhaust a bit.
Share components with the vw golf so parts prices are fair ,however with a car in this condition won't need much...
Good score,enjoy it.

Yea, that was me. I have a VW Fox Wagen, basically because, it was the only water cooled VW 2dr wagen that VW brought into this country and only for 4 years. I am fitting Audi B3 parts to the front suspension. It is a project car.

Basically for Audis in the states
B1 Audi Fox 1973-1979(Dasher has the same drive components)
B2 Audi 4000/CGT 1980-1987(Quantum has the same drive components)
B3 Audi 80/90 (1988-1992)
B4 Audi 90 (1993-1995)
B5 Audi A4/S4 (1996-2001)

So B2 Audi 4000/CGT 1980-1987(Quantum has the same drive components)

The rears look easy, bilsteins with adjustable perches, too low the axle may become an issue. he's looking for about 2" rear.

The front is more the issue, springs everything I look at says 83 and up and nothing for '82 down. He would like about 3" in the front.

Looks like for the lowered look with a usable suspension it still a bit high and guys use rocker skirts and the dam to make it look more lowered.

I like the 'slammed' look (both, cars and cycles), but we're in So Cal, so in winter months, we only get a bit of rain (sometimes) ... no snow drifts.

Just a question, if you slam it, what's your son going to drive when the snow drops up there? idea.gif

Posted by: Mark Henry Sep 14 2018, 05:53 PM

My or moms winter car rolleyes.gif

Workable...my shop is on my property, so most of the time I don't need my car.
We also have a lot of dry winters here, so he'll likely drive when the roads are dry. Once out of high school, in collage or an apprenticeship, he get a winter beater.

Like I said many Canadians drive winter beater cars from November 1st till April or May 1st. Basically the good cars go away as soon as they start spraying salt, till after a few good rain falls to wash the salt away in the spring.

Owned an 82 CGT Front new and an 85 CGT. The horsepower difference is huge. I called the 82 the sheep in wolf’s clothing which might be perfect for your teen. Motors are bulletproof. The interior electricals are a weak point. Constantly replacing window switches power locks interior door pin switches and patching wires going from the body into the doors. Very small gauge wires which broke easily. They were both great driving cornering cars. I wanted the 82 lowered but had no money so cut the springs 2” which transformed cornering to a whole new level still with a good ride.

Add a 3rd brake light top of rear window like the 86s.

The 85 was more the wolf in wolfs clothing.
Also owned an 86 Ur Quattro (Audi Coupe Quattro 10 valve) as well as a 300 hp 20 valve turbo. All had dodgy interior electrics

Since you have the fab skills, it may be easier to just fab a coilover front suspension for the car. Remove the lower spring perch, weld in bottom ring where you want, and install coilover set up.

You need to buy one of these if you do not have one.

IPB Image

And if you want to update a little, it would not hurt to have one of these.

IPB Image

I do know from friends, that the early CGTs were still using the ceramic fuses. The 85 and later cars used an upgraded fuse box. A few friends have changed them out to be a little more reliable.
