914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 1975 Muffler Heat Shield (heat protection plate) removal

Posted by: mmichalik Oct 14 2018, 12:55 PM

Hello everyone,

We are just about ready to remove and replace the rear trunk sheet metal, because of rust just underneath the tail lights.

The replacement part is here, from Restoration Designs so, I have been getting it prepped. I'm looking at the muffler heat shield and there doesn't seem to be any obvious way of removing it.

I searched the board and read some posts about the early models having 6 phillips head screws mounting it to the body. Are the later models non-removable?

Or am I missing something.... (which is totally possible)

Thanks!

Mike

Early are screwed in. Later are welded.

Thank you sir.

We'll just have to figure out the best way to deal with it.

Have a great Sunday!

There are just a few spot welds on each tab. IIRC. you can see them from inside the trunk. beerchug.gif

Awesome! We'll look in there and drill them out.

Have a great day!
