914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Brutus the 916 to be in Paris February 2019

Posted by: dr914@autoatlanta.com Nov 7 2018, 11:41 AM

For those of you with an interest in this car, Brutus the prototype 916 and Corina Porsche's personal car, it will be featured in the RM auction in Paris, Feb 2019

https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/pa19

The 916 is the rarest production Porsche ever made, and this one the prototype of the prototype, fitted with a 2.9 RS engine, and personally owned by a member of the Porsche family. What else could make it more valuable?

Are 916’s production cars or prototype cars?

A set of Avon CR6ZZs or CN36s...as that crowd craves originality and "period correct." poke.gif

Seriously, this will be a very interesting result to watch.

Posted by: dr914@autoatlanta.com Nov 7 2018, 12:06 PM

The fact that they had unique serial numbers, were sold to retail buyers, and at least one came to the U S with the dot sticker in the door jamb also sold new to a retail buyer, in my opinion makes them production cars. HOWEVER, Brutus is indeed a prototype, as it started as a 914-6, had a 914-6 serial number, and was made into a 916 by the factory, and never sold new by Porsche

Posted by: dr914@autoatlanta.com Nov 7 2018, 12:08 PM

All THAT crowd at Amelia wants is the story, I have seen filthy non original cars win awards there!!

They are hoping that it sets a record for a 914 type car. If it does, it would be great for all of us, and the 914 would get some more world wide recognition. Look at this article:

Louise Porsche was Ferry's sister, and she married Anton Piëch => Louise Piëch
These are the parents of Ferdinand Piëch (husband of Corina)

Check that right heat exchanger for the MFI warm air.
I saw one of those for sale in Europe years ago.
Look at how the factory did the clutch release arm for the 916 trans.
All cool stuff.

Wonder how the yellow 916 is doing these days, it was owned by one of the Porsche gals as well. My old friend Otis Chandler acquired it in the early 1980s from the Porsche Family, he sold it to a collector about 10 years later. It went to a private Porsche museum in Japan. These cars didn't trade for much coin back then; it's all about the 6 and 7 figures today shades.gif

It's alive and well, Marty, and featured in the new version of the book, Carrera RS. Restored but for the original brown paisley, as it isn't available. Owner has a house in Europe and the U.S. and is definitely one of us...forgot which house he keeps it at.

agree.gif Way too often.

Been cleaning up after writers for 20 years, and in seeing the raw stuff have been amazed what some writers are willing to see printed with their name on it—or worse, commit a publisher to. The good news: The thoughtful writers outnumber the hip-shooters, in my experience.

I can't argue with the provenance of Brutus but I would ask the question how do you know that this car is the "prototype of the prototype" How do know that there aren't other cars out there that are factory built steel roof cars?

Posted by: GregAmy Nov 8 2018, 12:58 PM

9141430195 was the first one built, and the only one in 1971, the other 10 being '72s.

good man, AND the only 916 with a 914-6 id number, the rest had 916 serial numbers

Posted by: 9146GUY Nov 8 2018, 01:50 PM

So Porsche built 11 916's all in SN sequence and are all 72's. Can't argue that. But how many other 914's have factory installed steel roof panels? The 908/914 that is in the museum and Brutus are two more besides the 916's. Are there any others that anyone is aware of?

I remember seeing the blue one a number of times back when it lived in N. California. Including seeing it driving on El Camino Real, leaving the Stanford Concours. And getting to crawl all over it in the parking lot of the Monterey Historics in 1998. I even have a couple of analog photos of it there...

?? Neither of them had a black interior - they were either Paisley (9142330017) or tan leather (9142330018)
They can also be recognised by the wheels (although they could be swapped around): 17 they differed front to rear, 18 they were the same (7x15?) all round.
(The rear badging also differs).
