914World.com _ 914World Garage _ What's the best way to test a fuel pump?

Posted by: electrolime Jun 18 2005, 09:26 PM

I need to check to see if the fuel pump is functioning on my 74 1.8. The wiring for it on the car is not there so I just need to test it manually. How do I just test to see if the pump will work? I bought this car as a non running project.

Thanks
-Pat

There are two terminals on the pump. + and - .
Run a wire to each with crimp-on connectors and touch to battery terminals.

go, no-go. wink.gif

Inlet hose in container of gas, outlet hose in empty container, 12VDC to hot lead, negative to ground...

at some point you'll also need to know that it an deliver rated pressure; FI cars are very sensitive to fuel pressure.

after you've verified that it starts and runs (no not run it very long dry - like seconds, tops) you'll need to hook up a fuel pressure gauge. use one that goes to 100 psi - good pumps can deliver a LOT of pressure against an infinite restriction.

past that, there's volume delivery data in the manuals.
