914World.com _ 914World Garage _ CANCELLED | Saturday, January 5 driving "event "in SoCal

Posted by: Tdskip Nov 26 2018, 04:49 PM

OK SoCal mafia-let's put the tools down for a day and drive these darn things.

How about a driving route that takes us from Orange County up through the canyons into the Inland Empire and then to Idyllwild for a group lunch, reversing the route to get back to orange county before 3 o'clock.

There are plenty of twisty bits to make things interesting on that run, and there are worse places to have a lunch.

Don't have a running 914 but still want to go? No worries, just bring anything that you deem interesting and join us.

I can print up route sheets etc.

Who wants to go?

It's best to do drives dawn patrol and home by 10:00 -11:00am.
Anytime later there's to much friggin traffic!

I work East Coast hours so no worries on my side about leaving early, but I've done this run a bunch of times and it's reliably entertaining.

Happy to shorten it up if that's with the local mafia wants.

Posted by: douglastic Nov 26 2018, 05:17 PM

I don't have a 914 (yet?), but live about 45min from Idylwild

Can I just meet up there and drool over your cars?

Sounds like a day trader or stock broker Skip! biggrin.gif

You should come up with a cool name for these like Jim's "Dawn Patrol" - such as 914 Cruise, SoCal 914 Cruise-in, 914 Twisty Stompers, etc.! biggrin.gif

I don't know what my schedule will be for then, but I may be able to make it in my classic BMW E30, but I've got it down if I can (914 won't be near done).

Cheers! beerchug.gif

E 30 certainly qualifies as a cool car!

I think Keith is going to join us, any of the other regulars care to join?

1) How early is OK to head out to start the drive? 7 AM?

2) Starbucks right at the start of the Ortega highway OK as a meeting point?

How about posting a route for those who may want to meet up with us. It would help me decide also.

I was thinking Elsinore, will miss Ortega Hwy but not worth the extra hour drive time to get to SJC

Greg, I like Elsinore as a meet-up point, but let's see what the OP decides.

Get out of my head guys! I was thinking there and then Idyllwild as the two natural sync-up points.

3 days event last 2015 Route 66 Palm Spring and saturday drive at Idyllwild.
Is this a full day run for Jan 5? Corey and I attended saturday only. Left early morning and went home in the evening. Around 300 miles round trip.

Looks like a 2/3 day, with options to cut short based on people’s scheudles. My guess is home around 3.

No opposing viewpoints so let's take this as the run.

You should be able to click on the map link and have it load on your phone.

Posted by: Tdskip Jan 2 2019, 05:31 PM

Hi gentlemen - I just found out that I have to travel for work this weekend and will not be available to make the drive.

You all will probably have a better time without me anyway, wink, and the route is published and good to go so I hope that people still go and enjoy the day.

VERY TEMPTING!!
You guys will go by my home!
I know wife created a possible trip for us, but let me check with my lawyer to see how much she will get after the divorce....

I will try to take the chains off and will let you know.... before the 5th!

I just came back from the Borrego Springs Metal statues...this is also a very nice trip! something to think about for a future run....

Unfortunately I can’t make it because of an unexpected work commitment. Believe me, I would much rather be out driving with you guys.

It sounds like we should just push this back till another weekend-make sense?

Posted by: 76-914 Jan 4 2019, 06:44 PM

It's always a good idea to drive it solo before taking others. Ask me how I know! dry.gif

Hi, I’ve driven it but wise counsel.

Posted by: 76-914 Jan 4 2019, 07:39 PM

Two questions 1.) how long did that trek consume, one way; #2 did they pave the end of Sage Rd,?

Posted by: R8CERX Jan 4 2019, 07:45 PM

Great call-
It is supposed to rain around here on Saturday PM- hissyfit.gif

I was border line as I don't like to get R8CER X wet....

But I STILL believe we should do a run to BORREGO SPRINGS--and take them pictures with the metal sculptures… or at least go there and eat and back!
