So my steering wheel butterfly was pretty beat up and I could not bear to put it back on a Dallas Custom restored wheel. I liked the idea of powder coat, but as was pointed out here on the World the detail is sometimes lost with powder coating. I decided to Cerakote the butterfly in order to retain the detail on the small ridges on either side of the butterfly. After I aluminum oxide bead blasted the metal, a gun guy buddy of mine baked on Cerkote graphite black.
I think it turned out well, but I wanted to give a shout out to the World for educating me and inspiring me to roll up my sleeves and just do it. Krylon or powder coating would have been sufficient, but it is the sickness.

I've painted a few before and they come out looking nice, but do tend to wear or chip after a period of time.
Yours turned out nice. Keep us apprised as to how well the coating holds up.

Cerikote is tough stuff but SEM trim black is the “correct” paint. Not bashing your choice. My car is not even close to stock.

The curing temps are cool enough I can try a coat on my 3D printing.

I like Many cerakotes are air cured. Thanks for posting and am looking forward to other applications and uses.

Reviving this as my wheel is currently at Dallas Custom. Thoughts/input on removing the center pad from the metal butterfly frame so I can paint it? The pad seems pretty firmly attached as I’ve explored pushing it from behind....

I push it out with my thumbs. It was secured with contact cement but it’s usually pretty dried out. I have a lot of spares that I’ll send you for the cost of shipping if you mess up yours.

Ditto on that. I just pressed it out with my thumbs. 40 year old contact cement is a bit brittle.

What’d you glue it back in with? Brand new contact cement?!

Yes, Woodweld contact cement. Available most anywhere. two thin coats and let dry double the recommended time.

So...I don't have access to bead blasting - and I don't do much work like this but normally I'd just sand it down lightly and then paint but the little ridges make this difficult and is why the OP did the bead blast and the Cerakote.
I'm just planning to repaint with SEM trim black - but how should I prep this?

Wire wheel the ridges, prime and paint.

Just finished mine with SEM trim black. Is it perfect, no? Is it pretty darn good - yeah.

I think he meant to say Weldwood, a good product that is readily available at stores like Lowes.
